Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Women Winter 2009
Open Women
GW Birthday 10K, 34:34
Erin Swain (26) of Arlington, VA was a third overall at the Jingle All the Way 10K in 36:35 for eighth place. She also took the runner-up spot for the new king of the New Year’s Eve races, the Fairfax 4 Mile.
Hirut Mandefro is the top dog. She took three of the most competitive races in style. First, she mastered the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in a swift 27:20 ahead of third place Susannah Kvasnicka who was the top submaster with her 28:25. A lot of top racers planned their winter around the USA Cross Country Championships 8K on February 7. Many had top times there but only ran one race. Cross country always runs slower than road races.
Still, Mandefro had another obstacle, winning the GW Birthday 10K in an apparent 34:34. Her time was more than two minutes ahead of Muluye Gurma who finished third there to take fourth place in the division. The course ran about one-seventh of a mile long, giving Mandefro a 33:49 10K equivalent. Gurma was a distant third at the Colonial HM in 1:20:49 a week later. Mandefro was about 50 seconds short of an overall victory in 1:15:38.
Renee High waited until February to make her move. She won it all at the Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 49:52. Then she cemented her runner-up spot a week later running another unusual distance, the TS Tune Up 30K in 1:56:09. The 14K equals a 34:44 10K, while the 30K numbers out at 35:53. Fifth place Briana Whaley had two overall wins but earned her spot with a runner-up 17:20 at a 5K on Thanksgiving. Yihunnish Bekele was right behind her, pacing through the Alexandria 5M in 28:42. She followed that with fifth overall at the Colonial HM in a less dynamic 1:24:56.
Caroline White (36:31) and Erin Swain (36:35) followed race winner Kvasnicka at the Jingle All the Way for their seventh and eighth spots. Swain ran Alexandria 5M in 29:47. White took on the USA Cross Country Championships 8K in 30:14. Ninth place Aidan Van Cleef ate up the Tidewater region with five overall victories, capping her best at the Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 52:38. To show how tough the competition is, she finished the USA Cross Country Championships 8K in 29th place with a solid 30:29. Laura O'Hara helped the Westminster Road Runners win the women's title at the RRCA Challenge with the fastest 10 miler of the period in 1:01:16 to round out the top ten.
Fifty-five women in the division was the speed limit for the winter rankings.

19 & Under Women
Celtic Solstice 5M, 29:37, 10K = 37:21
The teen division continued to grow in total numbers but fell by more than one- third to just 30 qualifiers. Half of the top dozen are on the brink of aging out of the division. Laura Paulsen won the division at the Towson Turkey Trot in 18:44. Then, in December, she ripped away any chance of losing the crown with a brilliant Celtic Solstice 5M in 29:37.
Fourth place Sullivan Parkes of Winchester, VA was more than three minutes slower in the next best five miler. She did have five age group wins and topped out with an 18:41 at the Run for a Rose 3M.
Third place Rachel Rose had a sluggish start at Thanksgiving but bolted to an overall win to start the year at the Charlottesville New Year's Day 5K in 19:00. Bethany Rahall started with a sharp Toys for Tots 10K in 39:14 to earn the runner-up spot. Later in December she added an AS Anniversary 15K in 1:02:01. Erin Heaney traveled to the odd distance Lovers 14K in 58:07 for sixth place. Young Nicole Dawson (14) was one of four teens with five age groups wins, including an overall win at the Super Bowl 5K in 19:48.

35-39 Women
Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M, 28:25, 10K = 35:50
Susannah Kvasnicka of Great Falls, VA took out the division easily at the huge Alexandria 5M in 28:25. Hilary Cairns was third there in 30:41 as she worked her way back toward top form. Kristi Markowicz of Newport News, VA bolted to fourth place with a couple of quick 5Ks, including the St. Kateri in 18:13. Mary Davison of Bristow travels all over the region for competition. She started well with a Trot for Hunger 5K in 18:21 to settle in fifth place.
December 14 was the competition day. Many of the top runners moseyed on over to West Potomac Park for the Capital Running Company Jingle All the Way 10K. Kvasnicka pulverized the competition, winning it all in 36:14. Cairns moved past Markowicz to second with a nifty 37:41, fourth overall. Maureen Ackerly won her own race that day in a slightly slower 18:12, a fitting duel for Markowicz. Davison was seventh overall behind Cairns in 38:13 to retain fifth in the division.
Then in late January, Ackerly tromped on the gas pedal and won it all at the Frostbite 15K in 57:44 to take the runner-up spot. For the next period, Jeanette Dumbrell and a newly remastered Naoko Ishibe will challenge her in the new masters division.

40-44 Women
Tim Kennard 10K Mile River Run, 1:02:26, 10K = 37:31
Naoko Ishibe (40) of Washington, DC ran her open class races to start the period as a sub master, finishing eighth in that division. For the spring, she will be one of the favorites to win the masters.
Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA has a first love of middle distance track and field. So after laying down an 18:12 5K to start the period, she excused herself again from the proceedings. Five of the top eight runners were new to the division this year. Danielle Russell of Ashburn ran a hometown 10K in 38:44 in November and it almost held for the entire period. She added the fastest 5K among qualifiers, winning the Reindeer 5K outright in 18:45. Anna Catanese looked solid for a top spot taking down Julia Smith at the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K 18:55 to 19:00, while Russell added a 19:00 November 5K to solidify her lead.
Russell then impressed everyone with a second overall at the challenging REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K to start the year in 39:46. That put her ahead of Samantha Kirby who had a very solid Jingle All the Way 10K albeit on a lightning fast course. Denise Knickman continued to dominate Baltimore with three overall wins.
Enter Susan Gray. At the USA Cross Country Championships 8K in February, she was third master in 31:21, well ahead of Knickman's 33:25. Neither really had a fast time yet. To end that month, Knickman showed brilliance at the RRCA Challenge 10M in 1:04:56 to leapfrog briefly into the second spot behind Russell. March started with Gray finishing second overall at the Tim Kennard 10K Mile River Run in 1:02:26 to snatch the division. Then on the last day of the period Smith burst forward to third at the Organ Donor 8K with a fine 30:35. Catanese stayed close, winning it all at a New Year's Day 10K in 39:06.
Eleven of these 34 masters women qualified in the Open division.

45-49 Women
RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, 64:54, 10K = 39:00
Looking chiseled, Kelly Dworak (46) of Carlisle, PA returned to the site of early masters winning ways to dominate the 45-49 division. Her RRCA Challenge 10 Mile was fast enough to have earned her fourth in the 40-44 division.
Most of the top runners returned to do battle. Laura Shannon of Williamsburg, VA shared the opening salvo with Cindy Conant, who won the Turkey Burnoff 10M in 1:07:27. Shannon ran the Governor's Land 5K in 19:39. Pamela Lovett, with nine age group wins, stayed close with an overall win at 19:31 at the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K. Win Persina broke the tape at the Gar Williams HM in December with 1:30:40.
Then in December at the monster Celtic Solstice 5M Kelly Dworak of Carlisle, PA formerly of Burke, VA, toasted the masters in 32:00. To start the year at the DCRRC Al Lewis 10 Mile, Win Persina outkicked Cindy Conant for the overall win 1:08:39 to 1:08:44 and the race was on. In February most everyone in the area battles at the RRCA Challenge and Dworak dominated her way to the title, winning the rolling course in 1:04:54. Conant is the runner-up finishing in 1:07:01. Conant closed some on the title in her final race, the B&A Trail HM in 1:28:35.
Shannon takes third in a head-to-head battle with Lovett at Governor's Land. It was Lovett's worst effort and she rebounded with a ton of great races to make it close. Persina had eight big races and added her best race at the No Rail on the Trail in March in 40:59 to take the five spot. Ruth Olson was the sixth of these top masters to have a sub 20:00 5K to her credit.

50-54 Women
Virginia is for Lovers 14K, 56:06, 10K = 39:05
Staying on top of a division is very tough to do. Ofelia Perotti ran very well in 2008. She won the Jingle All the Way 10K in 44:06. In February, she won the elongated GW Birthday 10K as well. Both races were more than three minutes slower than last year. It gave her just enough juice to best fifth place Peggy Ricely, who had bested nine ranked women at the Celtic Solstice in December with a 34:43. Third place Debra Flynn had the fastest 10 miler of the period, winning the Al Lewis in 1:13:39. Then she uncapped a fine 42:37 at the No Rail on the Trail 10K the final weekend to secure her spot.
Debi Bernardes joined the division and uncorked an excellent 20:12 for Thanksgiving but that only placed her second. The week before, Leisa Villani continued to stamp her name on the crown with an even better 19:19 overall win at the Governor's Land. For Thanksgiving she doubled the distance for a crafty 39:37. In February, she improved at the odd distance Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 56:06 (10K = 39:05).
Thirty-two women made the grade.

55-59 Women
By George 5K, 21:22, 10K = 44:29
Maria Shields (58) of Davidsonville, MD moves up on an increasingly larger division with a smartly done B&A Half Marathon 1:44:45.
Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA really does expect to win the division. Usually she keeps the same steady pace regardless of distance. At the DCRRC Gar Williams HM in December, she outlasted the competition in her opener with 1:43:27. Then she bore down at the 5K, winning the Christmas Caper in 21:33. She spent the first six weeks of 2009 notching track wins and on Valentine's Day topped the division with a By George 5K in 21:22.
Mary Lynn Swanson of Norfolk, VA again TRI-iumphantly swept the Mud in your Eye Cross Country Series (5K-6K-8K). We know she has the goods as she had run a 20:47 5K in early November for the fastest 5K of that year. In this period, she was third overall in those races, her best being the 6K with a 10K equivalent of 45:04. In the meantime, third place Barbara Mathewson went long. She took on the TS Tune-up series races (20K-25K-30K) victoriously. Her fourth race was the Turkey Trot 10K in 45:08.
Roseanna Norton aged up in the fall and captured a trio of Tidewater 5Ks, including the Gold's Gym in 22:00. The battle for fifth place was decided at the half marathon. Sixth place Dru Sexton ran the Star City in 1:45:35 to start the period. Maria Shields improved on her Celtic Solstice win over seventh place Linell Smith to end the period, winning the B&A Trail HM in 1:44:45.

60-64 Women
Jingle All the Way 10K, 47:17
As with last year, Chris Craun started the period with a solid win at the YMCA Turkey Chase 10K with a nice 48:24. Betty Brothers followed tradition at her Virginia Beach Trot, improving last year's race to 47:46. That weekend Alice Franks joined the 60-64 division, running the Turkey Burnoff in 1:20:11 to split between the two.
In 2007 Craun came back to dominate the Jingle All the Way 10K to earn the crown. This year she passed on the race while Franks moved in for the title with 47:17. Craun returned at the Celtic Solstice to win her division there, but more than three minutes slower than last year. Franks padded her lead the last week of the period with a win at the No Rail on the Trail 10K in 47:25.
Brothers battled fourth place Jeanne Kruger-Williams in the Fort Story 20K, 25K, and 30K series. This year she won the 20K and the 30K, both faster than Kruger-Williams' 25K with a 10K equivalent of 49:33. Right behind her for fifth place is Linda Kearney as runner-up at the Jingle All the Way 10K in 49:44.

RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, 1:22:57, 10K = 49:51
Dee Nelson of Gaithersburg, MD took over complete control of the division with alacrity. In perhaps the most dominating win of a division, all of her ten races were more than four minutes (per 10K) ahead of all other qualifiers. Usually in the older divisions the 5K is paramount. Nelson had her best race at the RRCA 10 Mile challenge in 1:22:57. That was a big improvement on her opening 10 miler at the Turkey Burnoff in 1:26:57. That third best time may have been affected by her second best race, a 5K on Thanksgiving, just two days before. A prolific racer, Nelson has run 60 or more races a year for the last 15 years.
Ellen Hocheder takes the runner-up spot with a slightly faster time at the Super Bowl 5K, in 27:46, ahead of Nancy Jakubec at the Toys for Tots in 27:55. Karen Kautz followed Nelson home for second place at both ten milers for the fourth spot. For fifth, Mary Kate Berglund of Richmond, VA races home at the Jingle Bell 5K to start the period in 28:06.

Celtic Solstice 5M, 42:09, 10K = 53:09
Pauline Ely (71) of Hampton, VA loves the long races. Her 7 races added up to 74 miles of racing. Her seventh race at the Fort Eustis 10K in March was her fastest.
Tami Graf of Lusby, MD continues to dominate the regular runners but looked warily over her shoulders as two runners had a single race that would have topped her best. A third runner, Ecris Williams, had a solid REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K race that would have put the pressure on as well. Williams has run that race virtually every year and then she disappears.
Meanwhile, Graf has carved out the best time since December at ten different race distances. Among her nine age group wins is a swift 29:03 at the AS Valentine's Day 5K. Ernestine Shepherd moves up to second with a couple of first of the month 5Ks, New Year's Day in 31:04 and Super Bowl in 31:08. Janet Hughes is third, dominating the Shenandoah Valley with seven age group wins.
