Maya Angelou See Forever 5K

Anacostia Park is nice little secret in the southeast corner of the District. The location runs down the Anacostia River just after you cross the Sousa Bridge. The park is about two miles long and makes for a near perfect out and back 5K with the water just a few meters away.
This Saturday's race helps the See Forever Foundation/Maya Angelou Public Charter School. Age group winners received copies of one of Ms. Angelou's books.
One of the top racing couples in the area, Malcolm Lester (in photo) and Hilary Cairns usually have to share baby sitting duties but the lately they have both been able to race. Malcolm told us two weeks ago at the Capitol Hill Classic 10K that their children's grandmother was in town. Their daughter made them proud at age nine by winning the 3K event as the first female and fifth runner overall in 11:01.
As the runners lined up, Cairns had a tight expression on her face, perhaps because Mary Davison was lined up on her shoulder. Lester was a little more relaxed and even allowed Matt Anderson, another masters runner, jet out to an early lead. They had competed before and he was confident. Tom Heinemann (39) of Arlington, VA soon formed a duo with Anderson as they ate away the meters.
Cairns maintained her early lead and at the turnaround she had moved up to fourth overall. Surely she noted that Davison was not far behind but she was in near top shape and nobody was going to catch her in the last mile.
Meanwhile Lester inched his way up and in the third mile surged away to win in a solid 17:32. Cairns (in photo) could see the other two just in front of them and was more spurred on to make it a one-two family finish overall than about getting caught. Heinemann flew across the ChronoTrack mat a mere second ahead of Anderson in 17:54. Cairns just missed breaking 18:00 by a couple of seconds. Davison arrived in eighth overall with 18:38.
The grandmasters battle happened in both sexes. For the men both Vince McDonald (50) and Michael Cannon (51) (in photo) are prolific racers. As members of the 50 Plus Club, a club dedicated to running fifty races in a year, there is no bad day to be out racing. This time the cool, sunny morning was near perfect, partly because of the heavy rain the night before. Cannon hurried out quickly with short choppy strides. McDonald started out a little more relaxed and Cannon soon gapped him, finishing in 19:21.
For the women, both are ranked runners. Myra Washington (52) moved out smartly with the second pack but Barbara Haney (50) moved swiftly too like her shadow. The race was not decided until the final meters with Washington prevailing by three seconds in 22:31.
The fifth finisher in the race was Andrew Wyatt (31) of Alexandria, VA in 18:25. He has only been racing for a couple years so far but he already has a few marathons under his belt and has his eyes on next year's Boston Marathon. 60-64 age group winner William Scott of Lanham MD (in photo below) has a few years of long distance training and was able to add a few hard earned training lessons for Wyatt.
The top runner over sixty was Michael Golash (66) of Washington, DC who ran a snappy time of 21:29 as could be expected by a man ranked in the top five of his division in the Runner Rankings.
The battle for third place among the women was a close one too. Kate Bossange (24) was moving well. Cristina Burbach (35) knew she had to concede to the two top runners who were also in her age group. Her goal was to break twenty minutes. Bossange led her a merry chase and got pushed to 19:48 to qualify for the open division in the rankings. Burbach ( in photo) with her eyes on the clock in the final meters could not quite get her goal and settled for a solid 20:02, more than a minute faster than her qualifying time
After the race runners moved over to the food stand which supplied them with three choices of prepackaged lunches, (an excellent idea). There were turkey, ham, and tuna sandwiches. Each bag also contained a healthy apple, a choice of chips and a delicious candy bar. There was a DJ playing music just right for the occasion.
Parking was spacious and there were indoor facilities more than adequate for the crowd of happy runners.
At the awards ceremony, the announcer offered the microphone to the awardees for comments. This reporter declined comment and disappeared quickly into the crowd surrounding the food tent.
