Mark your calendar for June 30 and make 2009 the year you run your first, fastest or best marathon yet.

Join Coach George Buckheit and other members of Capital Area Runners as they start training for upcoming fall marathons. Whether you are a beginner looking to compete in your first race or an experienced marathoner looking to qualify for Boston, Capital Area Runners offers a variety of training programs designed to help you achieve your goals. Our programs concentrate on individual development within a supportive team environment.

Capital Area Runners provides members with track workouts, long run assistance, race-specific training groups, discounts at local running stores and an elite level of coaching.  With a knowledgeable, motivating and committed coach and reliable training partners, the Capital Area Runners marathon training program can help you accomplish a lot more in your running than you could ever hope to achieve on your own.

Each training group member receives a detailed training schedule, a weekly newsletter with training tips and advice, and has direct access to Head Coach George Buckheit.  Group workouts take place at locations around the Arlington area, with track workouts on Tuesdays (6:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. options), tempo runs on Fridays at 6:30 a.m, and long run options on both Saturday and Sundays at 7:00 a.m.

Coach Buckheit is a top local masters runner with extensive coaching experience. He was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American during his collegiate days at Bucknell and had an outstanding post-collegiate career, representing the United States in international competition. He has posted lifetime bests of 13:43 for 5,000M and 28:39 for 10,000M. George began his coaching career in 1979 as an assistant coach at Bucknell and has been coaching at the club level since 1981.

In recent years, George has been coaching many of the DC area's elite distance runners including Marine Corps Marathon champions Mary Kate Bailey (2004) and Kristen Henehan (2007), both of whom, along with Lisa Thomas, another Buckheit-trained athlete, qualified for the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials. Coach Buckheit has brought a comparable level of success to his non-elite training groups with more than 90% of his marathon runners recording personal best times over the past three years and dozens of runners qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Runners of all levels are welcome to try out the workouts before committing to the program.  For more information about Coach Buckheit and Capital Area Runners, visit our website, www.capitalarearunners.com or contact George Buckheit at george@capitalarearunners.com.
