Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Women Spring 2009

Open Women

Pike's Peek 10K, 33:03

Emily Ward of Richmond, VA was second overall at the Carytown 10K in 37:26 in May for 22nd in the Elite Division.

Maria Elena Calle is the queen of Richmond so it was not surprising that she had a strong finish at the region's biggest 10K. She stroked a fancy 33:33 for second overall just ahead of the flying feet of the defending champion for last period and last year, Mandefro Hirut. While Calle waited until the final day, winning the Carytown 10K in 34:31, Hirut was busy all period.

She got ready the week before the monster 10K by winning it all at the National HM in 1:15:36, ahead of fifth place Phebe Ko, who had finished in 1:17:04.

Two weeks before she won the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 27:08. Feeling restless she returned from Richmond the day after the 10K and lambasted the field at the Scope It Out 5K in 16:38.

While she rested, Amanda Trotter galloped to a fine 57:11 at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom to take the fourth spot in the rankings.

Hirut returned two weeks later to win it all at the Dismal Swamp Stomp in 1:14:48, disappointing third ranked Rahab Ndungu, who was third at the race in 1:14:59. Then while Trotter moved to Alexandria to win the Parkway Classic in 56:43, she crushed the local field at Pike's Peek in 33:03, the third fastest time ever on the course.

Soon-to-be-master-ace Elena Orlova won her division there in a swift 34:56

to take the sixth spot. After a solid race at the National HM in 1:18:33, seventh ranked Briana Whaley ran the GW Parkway Classic in 58:31. Eighth place Melissa Tanner was real close, running the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 58:45.

The next three spots were settled at the competitive Apple Blossom 10K in May. Muluye Gurma was fifth overall in 35:20 followed by Christine Ramsay (36:15) and Veena Reddy (36:35). Reddy's best race was 59:22 with the cherry blossoms, while Ramsay started the season with her best race at Kelly's Shamrock 5K with 17:10 for second overall.

Seventy-one runners qualified for the division.

19 & Under Women

National Half Marathon, 1:16:10, 10K = 34:25

Usually the teen division spreads the wealth. This time only about 20% of the times were from runners who had two qualifiers. Courtney Waldhauser (19) is gearing up for the Open division. Her three races all rode the top with a nice Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 19:03. She had two overall wins, including the not-so-small Clyde's 10K in 40:31.

Holly Rich (18) took a longer route to qualify for the Open division. She ran the National HM in 1:30:49 and then finished tenth overall at the Charlottesville 10M in 1:08:22. The next three runners had a couple of nice 5Ks each. Hannah Betman (17) won it all at the Viking 5K in 20:24. Nicole Durham was second overall at the Yellow Jacket 5K in 20:32. Sophie Mantelli (14) ran well at the competitive Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 20:42.

The big story is sixth place. Avery Cunningham is juts ten years old. She finished second overall at the Cherry Pit 10M in 1:12:06 and won her age group at Clyde's 10K in 43:21.

Two runners made the Open division.

35-39 Women

Pike's Peek 10K, 34:56

Maureen Forsyth (35) of Washington, DC ran top races in four distances between the 5K (18:28) and the half marathon (1:27:47), that just a week after winning her division at the St. Patrick’s Day 8K in 31:17.

Elena Orlova quietly went about her business, dominating the division.

She won at the marathon to start the period in 2:48:44, second overall. In late April she fully geared up for an eighth overall at Pike's Peek in 34:56. The following weekend she started with a solid 35:59 triumph at the Apple Blossom 10K. The next morning she passed all but one woman on the way to a 1:19:56 Frederick HM. She capped the period in Germantown with an overall win at the Germantown 5M in 28:32.

Barb Fallon-Wallace came to Rockville for a runner-up grooming 10K race in 36:59. Hilary Cairns stayed home in Washington, DC to take the third spot over last spring's champion Brenda Schrank. Schrank had knocked a few seconds off her time, down to 1:02:51. Cairns stayed in front with 1:02:30.

Fourth place goes to Mary Davison who had a respectable Pike's Peek in 38:13, just ahead of Erica Nemmers who won it all at the GW Parkway 5K in 18:23. Davison also won at the Shamrock HM in 1:24:59, while Nemmers idled away Friday evening in Crystal City, racing the 5K in 18:39.

Eight runners made the Open division.

40-44 Women

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 1:00:18, 10K 36:14

Maureen Ackerly (44) of Richmond, VA wins the masters against tough competition in Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 60:18 to take the division.

It was no surprise that the Credit Union Cherry Blossom provided the champion. In fact, it provided the top five runners their places. More than 30 women had a ChronoTrack time that would qualify at that race.

The period started with a charged battle between Danielle Russell and Maureen Ackerly at the St. Patrick's Day 8K. Russell prevailed in a third overall 29:24 with Ackerly next in 29:31. The next morning new master Naoko Ishibe was tops at Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 17:40. The following week she beat her time at the Shamrock HM (1:20:42). The last week in March, Russell improved with a nice 29:35 at the Van Metre 5M.

As April dawned, everyone headed for the big race that starts by the Washington Monument. Ackerly topped the field finishing 25th overall as the top master at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom (1:00:18). That avenged her earlier loss to Russell who was next in 1:01:01. Ishibe flew in next with 1:01:28.

Denise Knickman had a steady 1:05:12 for fourth. Later in the month she would win top masters at Pike's Peek in 38:00 to help prepare for her overall win the following week at the Frederick Marathon in 3:02:21. Samantha Kirby was next at CB in 1:05:36.

Julia Smith broke the deadlock winning the White Bank Classic 5M outright in 31:27 for the sixth spot. Paula Pels was second masters at Pike's Peek in 39:47 and then it was back to big races for Elizabeth Feldman, who took seventh.

Nine runners made the Open division.

45-49 Women

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 63:59, 10K = 38:27

Martha Merz took the top spot the first weekend with a solid ninth overall, age group win at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 30:42. She eschewed the Credit Union Cherry Blossom even though she won cash there last year. Her time at the other 10M (GW Parkway Classic) was not her usual stuff, though the 1:08:25 did give her first master. That would not have cracked the top ten at Cherry Blossom.

Former champion Andrea Wright won easily but did not come out to play again in the spring. Second place and this period's runner-up is hard working Cindy Conant who brought it home in 1:05:42 ahead of third place Vanessa Cox (1:07:46). Conant also was third master at Pike's Pike in 40:08, combined with a delicious Piece of Cake 10K in 40:43 on the rolling hills of Seneca Park.

Fourth place Pamela Lovett took no prisoners, winning it all at the Cox Falcon 5K to start the period. She added another overall win in May to bookend the period. Fifth place Laura Shannon stayed close, running the fastest marathon in the group in March. She ended her season as second overall at the Red, White, and Blue 5K in 19:43.

Last issue's cover girl, Win Persina, continues to please with two overall wins and three first age groups. Her best effort was at St. Patrick's Day 8K in 32:32.

Two made the Open division.

Dismal Swamp Stomp HM, 1:27:57, 10K = 39:45

Aileen Moffatt (51) of Washington, DC finished second two of the largest downtown races of the year, St. Patrick’s Day 8K and the Capitol Hill Classic 10K.

Debbie Flynn mounted a charge at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom, improving more than four minutes from last period's 10 Miler to a fine 1:09:36. It was clearly her best race but Teresa Rider came out of nowhere (Arlington, VA) to edge her out with a swift 1:09:28. Near the end of the period Rider added a second overall finish at the new Pacers Running Festival HM in 1:31:44.

The title was never in doubt as Leisa Villani put away all but one masters division runner at the world class Shamrock 8K in March with 31:20. Then in March she cemented her crown with the Dismal Swap Stomp HM in 1:27:57.

Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico was in the top three overall in 75% of her eight age group wins. That was too much fire power for last spring's champion even though Ofelia Perotti started the same as last year with a win at the St. Patrick's Day 8K.

Castillo-D'Amico had her best race in Williamsburg at the Queen's Lake 5K in 20:29. Perotti ran 20:43 at the Bright Beginnings 5K.

Sixth place Robin Goodwin moved up five places from last period with a nice Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 20:46 to start the period.

55-59 Women

Shamrock Festival 8K, 34:08, 10K = 43:20

Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA struggled this period finishing nearly a mile behind her fine Credit Union Cherry Blossom time from last year. If age group winner Susan Zeleniak (1:15:29) had run another race we would have had a new champion.

Blank fired again at Pike's Peek with a 45:29, more than a half mile slower than last year. Last year's rankings runner-up Lynn Swanson ran a swift Shamrock 8K to victory then disappeared.

Judy Ferrier stepped up to the plate that same day, winning the National HM in 1:43:49. Meanwhile, the following day, Buffy Ostlund was mucking about at the Shamrock HM in a distant ninth behind winner Mary Brainerd (1:48:15). Beverly Wispelwey leapt past her from ninth to fourth, improving her opening day Martha Jefferson 8K in 39:05 with a smartly done Charlottesville 10M in 1:18:53.

Linda Whittaker won the battle of 5Ks with Linda Gulick for sixth place at the Queen's Lake race in 23:30 versus the SPCA 5K in 23:44. Roseanna Norton filed in behind Brainerd at the Shamrock Half in 1:49:25.

Then the final day of the period Buffy Ostlund had an incredible breakthrough race at the Marine Corps Historic Half to nearly take the runner up spot in 1:42:18. Anne Wood, the victor in 1:38:09, would have taken the crown with a second race.

60-64 Women

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 1:17:22 10K = 46:30

Jane Godfrey (60) of Takoma Park, MD enters the division and the top ten at the fiercely competitive Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, finishing fifth of the 16 local women.

If you want to earn the crown, all you have to do is go after the biggest, most competitive races and then win them. That sounds easy. Alice Franks returned even more dominating, starting with bold victory at St. Patrick's Day 8K in 37:46 over fourth ranked Linda Kearney (39:01).

Two weeks later she took out runner-up Chris Craun at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 1:17:22 to 1:20:06. Craun had run 1:16:37 last year. At Pike's Peek she ran 47:02 last year but this year was wicked hot and many of the times were slower, albeit the men's course record was set. Franks prevailed in 47:42 with Craun holding off Kearney 49:59 to 50:12.

Usually, Virginia has a major piece of the competition. This period none of the top 25 times was in Virginia events. Deborah Gebhardt made her successful bid for third in March at the National HM in 1:48:20. Franks ended the period winning the Capitol Hill Classic 10K in 48:14 ahead of Gebhardt's 49:19.

Esther Buchser squeezed into the fifth spot ahead of Marge Rosasco's three fast 5K wins with her win at the Frederick HM in May in 1:51:53.

65-69 Women

Pike's Peek 10K, 49:27

Joan Coven is back on the warpath with a trio of solid 5Ks, including a 25:05 at the Queen's Lake Run. She also had a scrumptious chip time of 51:59 at the Ukrop's 10K where huge numbers make for slower gun times. Fourth place Linda Yarr powered her way to third place at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:33:15.

Dee Nelson retained her crown with an excellent rolling course Piece of Cake 10K in 50:09. Then, a day before the CB, she routed the field at the Charlottesville 10M with a better than solid 1:24:07. Then she showed her mettle by pulverizing the field at Pike's Peek in 49:27, nearly two miles ahead of second age group finisher Linda Yarr.

Last period's runner-up, Ellen Hocheder, settled for third even though she greatly improved her top 5K time to 26:52 at Kelly's Shamrock. Tougher than nails Felicity Hawes got a late start at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M before finishing fifth overall with her chip time. Then she ended the period crushing the Germantown 5M course age group record in 45:12 to take fifth in the period.

70-74 Women

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 1:36:06, 10K = 57:45

Ecris Williams is known for winning her age group all 12 times at the Rotary Resolution 10K on the first of January. After that she usually disappears. This year she exploded with the top local time at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom, second in her age group in 1:36:06. One more race and the division would have been hers.

Third place Pauline Ely of Hampton, VA has been known to travel north to do battle. She snuck in ahead of fifth place Jamie Wollard at Credit Union Cherry Blossom. That was her toughest race; her other six were all age group wins. Runner-up Nancy Fraser won her hometown 10 miler in 1:43:56.

Meanwhile Graf, whose daughter races in the Tidewater region, ventured south. She surrounded two fast 5Ks with a Dismal Swamp Stomp HM win in mid April in 2:09:22 for the top three times. She returned home at the end of the period to capture the fourth fastest race with her Capitol Hill Classic 10K in 1:01:28.

75-79 Women

Justin Foundation 5K, 32:28, 10K = 1:07:36

Jacqueline O’Neil (77) of Washington, DC is a regular at the downtown races, winning the division at the Stop the Silence 5K in April.

Harriet Locke pulverized the division with a best 5K race by more than five minutes but this time she only had one race. WDF leader Joanne Mallet entered the new age group and topped the field at the BRRC Lady Distance Festival but needed a second race as well to fall in right behind Locke.

Instead Yvonne Aasen, the pride of the Annapolis Striders, took the runner-up spot, finishing behind Mallet at the BRRC 5K in 38:25. Jacqueline O'Neil, who always looks so pleasantly surprised when she wins a race, won all four of her races. In a rare venture to the 10K distance, she won at Pike's Peek in 1:30:29. This Washingtonian is more comfortable starting her races from Freedom Plaza where she had a fastest 5K and of course the St. Patrick's Day 8K. Her top race was in West Potomac Park winning the Stop the Silence in 37:00.

Third place Pat Eden of Williamsburg, VA wins her spot as a race walker competing favorably against the runners in four Colonial races.
