Ready...Set...Run! Thousands of runners and walkers will take to the streets on July 4th for the Ninth Annual Autism Speaks 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk. This community event has become a Potomac tradition, and welcomes participants from all over the Washington region. Come join us to celebrate the 4th of July Independence Day holiday. More than 3,000 runners and walkers participated in 2008, and we hope to welcome 5,000 runners and walkers in 2009.Support your community by registering Friday, July 3 or Saturday morning, July 4 for the Autism Speaks Potomac 5K & 1 mile walk in Potomac, MD. On Friday, late registration (entry fee $35) will be held at Potomac Methodist Church from 4:00-7:00 pm. On Saturday, late registration (entry fee $40) will be available near Potomac Library. The Autism Speaks 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk will be held near Potomac Library at the intersection of River and Falls Roads in Potomac, MD. Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and to advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. All event proceeds will benefit Autism Speaks.
Do this run because you can. Do this run for those who cannot. Do this run to make a difference. Do this run to find a cure. Over the last nine years the Potomac 5K has contributed more than one million dollars to fund autism research. So do this run and do your part, build a team, raise money, and help to change the world for those who have autism and their families. Autism touches all of us and it is up to us to take a stand, walk a walk or run a race to end autism.
About Autism
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

It was founded in February, 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism. Bob Wright is Senior Advisor at Lee Equity Partners and served as vice chairman, General Electric, and chief executive officer of NBC and NBC Universal for more than twenty years.
