For the Washington Running Report
They never listen. With dire predictions of extreme humidity to match the rising temperatures, the crew told everyone to forget about personal records and concentrate on survival. Announcer Lyman Jordan spent much of the dawn hour urging caution. Shortly before 7:30 a.m., Eric Makovsky again graced us with his excellent rendition of the National Anthem. Then he strapped on his Chronotrack D-tag and joined 1300 plus racers at the starting line. More than 600 men and women in the 20K and exactly 354 each (men and women) in the 10K charged down Harrison Street leaving Market Station and a touch of sanity behind.
In the first exuberant rush down the hill it would be hard to distinguish which race each runner was in. Runners in the longer race faced the ever growing heat and the added delight of a long 1.5 mile climb at the halfway point. At the start, veteran long distance man Michael Wardian knew that conditions were not ripe to take down Aaron Church's 1:04:29 masterpiece set on a kinder day in 2006. Not that Wardian had not had his share of hot race days (see his report on the Marathon des Sables) and ultra marathon victories. Since 2004 when the 20K began, Wardian has raced in 62 marathons finishing in the top three 42 times while winning 14 outright. The opening start photo shows him letting quite a few runners take an early lead. Oh, and he won this race last year in 1:06:28, the third fastest time on the course.
Two former top Ranked Runners, Gurmessa Megerssa and Steven Crane, lit out quickly. Both had excellent credentials. Crane had set the course record just last year in 30:58. Megeressa has been winning all summer including a 19:53 at the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler, another of the races in the Loudoun Race Series, ahead of Aaron Church (20:07). Church won the 20K three straight years (2005-07). As runners in the 20K enviously watched, Megerssa quickly darted back down the W&OD trail nearly catching the lead bike. At mile four, Crane was about one hundred yards back and he battled hard to maintain the distance. By the finish Megressa (in photo) scrambled up the final hill as if were flat and jubilantly took the crown. His time of 31:27 did not best Crane's event record from last year. Crane hurried in next in 31:58.
Third place was run in a standout time of 33:14 by Benjamin Ingram (32) of Baltimore, MD. Fourth place Justin Fritzius was another player at the Twilight Festival finishing third in 20:35 to add to a couple of solid 5K wins. Today, the heat advised him to settle back for a respectable 33:55. Not surprisingly, most of the top runners were young. The first runner with any mileage was Victor Cretella (39) of New Market, MD in 36:59. Cretella is an avid track fan. For the last three years, he has been the overall champion at the Frederick Steeplechasers Decathlon Series. This unique series consists of ten straight weeks of running distances from 200M to 3200M and receiving an age adjusted time. Often he was the overall winner before he added a time adjustment.
The 12th place finisher, Brian Schimdt (41, photo right) knows all about Leesburg weather. He set the first standard for submasters finishing third overall in the 20K in 1:10:01. This year he was again the first Leesburg resident and winner of the masters division in 37:18. James Dunn (48) was next for Leesburg and first for his division with 39:28. Last year Jason Page (64) of Hamilton, VA lost an epic battle with Bill Joyce in the 10K 39:17 to 39:36. Last year Bill Joyce, then 64, was so toasted at the hot Twilight Festival 4M that he dropped out of the race. Inexplicably, this year he decided to race the 20K on this hottest of days/daze. No problem for Page; he sighted in on Richard Adams. Jr. (58) of Herndon, VA. Adams had been geared up for the race upon hearing a rumor that his winning days may have passed by. Though Page and Adams will rarely have an opportunity to race in the same division, perhaps later a 60-69, nobody wants to get caught. Adams prevailed in 40:39 as top grandmaster while Page won his division in 41:00.
So what happened to the young grandmasters? Former Frederick Steeplechaser President Brent Phillips (54) decided to came back and "see how slow I have become." Then he proceeded to take down the division in a not-so-slow 42:58.
Jerry Lewis (75) of Reston, VA lives to take down records. In 2006 he set the 70 and older record in 1:41:32. He stayed with the 20K, winning last year with no real chance at Dixon Hemphill's 47:40 for the 10K. Then this summer he "vacationed" in Copenhagen. His story about his marathon will be in the upcoming September/October Washington Running Report. Fully rested, he took on the late Ray Blue's 75 and older time of 55:43 set in 1999. He beat the heat back to the barn in a new event record 53:19.
The Washington Post had an article about A/C settings and claimed that women prefer it to be warmer. I laughed myself silly. In the 10K half the top dozen were masters runners. Alisa Harvey has a problem with heat. Her blazing speed generates a lot of heat. At 43, her pre race plan was to take it easy on the course. She really did, though she punished the rest of the field. She won it all in a nifty 38:50, more than a minute ahead of a very talented runner, Mary Davison of Bristow, VA (in photo). Remember that Harvey had finished in 37:07 last year with third overall and set the masters record on a day when the event record had been broken (35:44). She also has the submasters record along with Heidi Gerken with 36:42. Jenny Fitzgerald (29) of Woodbridge, VA was third in 40:28.
Anita Freres (44) of Reston, VA got a late start but hung in to win her division in 44:53. For sure, she was not happy with her time but believe me it was brutal out there.
As a veteran of nearly 2,000 races, including a 50 Mile win where I lost 27 pounds due to heat, I state, for the record, "This was the toughest race I have ever raced."
Peggy Davis (57) of Vienna, VA was tops in the grandmasters winning a net time battle with Linda Kearney (62) of Oak Hill, VA. Both racers finished in 50:25.
Back in the 20K Michael Wardian (in photo) looked totally relaxed, eschewing the water station as if he had not a care in the world. After finishing second to event record holder Aaron Church in 2005-06, Michael skipped a year. Church won in 2007 and has not yet returned. Wardian won last year and this year's victory was in 1:07:09, missing his second best effort in 2006 by a mere second. Last year he won handily by two minutes in 1:06:28. This year Bart Borghuis (1:08:57 in 2008) was feeling the heat. He was pressing hard in the final downhill miles, not so much to catch Wardian but to hold place. George Ingham had finished sixth last year in 1:10:32. This year in much hotter weather he thought he saw his chance to catch Borghuis. He raced a marvelous 1:10:15 but Borghuis somehow held him off during the final climb up Harrison Street to prevail in 1:10:14.
What a difference a year makes. Chris Hague was last year's teen champion in 1:13:34. This year the lad from Kensington, MD turned 20 and sported a nifty 1:11:20. Fifth place Matt Woods (29) of Falls Church, VA, sometimes known by his first name of John, took charge of his division with a fine 1:12:09. Andrew Rolph was next in 1:13:40. Then the following trio was so close it was really hard to tell who the victor was. Seventh place Bert Jacoby of Fredericksburg, VA (1:14:02) thought he might have been a shadow behind eighth place Stephen Ketcham of Lorton, VA (1:14:03). Ninth place Chris Desilets (22) of Silver Spring, MD roared in next with 1:14:08. The tenth finisher, J. D. Palmer of Chantilly, VA, was the runner-up last year in 1:08:28. This year he was way off his normal great form.
Songster Eric Makovsky of Washington, DC had an excellent 1:17:33 but lurking behind him, M.J. Benna (37) of Stafford, VA had started more than a minute late, taking the victory with a superior net time though Makovsky finished a hundred meters ahead of him. Way back in 2006 Chris Hamley (44) set the masters record in 1:12:49. This year he won in 1:17:19. He will be looking for a cool 2010 to help return to form so that he can measure up to Paul Okerberg's 45-49 record of 1:12:59 set in 2004.
The grand master records look pretty untouchable. Since-retired Norton Compton holds the 50-54 honors with 1:17:22. Pretender to the Moeser throne, Alan Pemberton won the 55-59 last year. He finally wrenched one of the four records (55-59 and 60-64 for both distances) held by Patrick Griffith with a great 1:17:44. Mike Lehman (54) of Harrisonburg, VA took the top spot in 1:23:05. Gary Grimsley (55) of Springfield, VA is a cousin of Compton. He claims he does better in hot weather. With a 1:20:00 PR in the 20K, he was hoping for a shot at the record. He was warned it was too hot. Then for some reason he got a late start of two and a half minutes. He finally tracked down race leader Jay Wind (1:29:49) about halfway into the race. Wind, with a strong tradition for fast finishes, could not hold on and Grimsley won in 1:27:43. Two of the four grandmasters that crossed the line in front of him are 54.Meanwhile in the sixties, Lou Shapiro was trying to hold place and maybe his event record of 1:28:21 from 2007. It was not to be. Bill Joyce (65) of Herndon, VA was just too strong, motoring away to a 1:26:13 changing of the guard. Shapiro ran an excellent runner-up in 1:30:04. For the 60-64 Ronnie Wong (62) of Catonsville, MD was sporting a new summer haircut. Bernard Wright (62) of Pomfret, MD was pushing hard and could see Wong just up the trail but victory would belong to Wong in 1:28:19.
Diminutive Phoebe Ko (26) of Baltimore, MD had no one to push her. Not that event record holder Mary Kate Bailey (2006) had anyone tagging along when she set the record. She had run 1:13:50 to best Cathy Pugsley and her submasters record 1:20:10 by a mile. Ko's edge was more like a half mile and Elena Orlova (39) of Gaithersburg, MD, with 1:17:34, is getting ready to set the masters world on fire. The fourth and final 20K record was set by Naoko Ishibe (40) of Fairfax, VA (in photo) in 1:21:16. She was told before the race to start slower on the hot day with the opening 4.5 mile climb and then the final descent might provide a negative split. She ran a solid effort, being overtaken by fourth place Mary Beth Muething 1:20:38 in the final miles. She ended up sixth, never seeing Meredith Curs (32) of Charlottesville, VA who started late by a minute, finishing in 1:21:55.
Third and fourth battled each other and stayed close to Orlova. Meghan Ridgly ran 1:18:07, while Melissa Rittenhouse (33) of Harrisonburg, VA followed in 1:18:36. Last year Ridgly had been fourth in 1:18:38. Amazingly, Meuthing improved a place and finished a minute faster than in 2008.
Last year Deedee Loughran of Oak Hill, VA entered the grandmasters with a course record 1:26:28. Her victory today in 1:29:19 is probably a more impressive effort. Betty Blank (56) of Falls Church, VA won easily last year in a record 1:30:46. She was unhappy with her time. One reason she runs so fast is that she is never happy with her time. This year was no exception, though she won by more than ten minutes. The amazing Alice Franks (61) of Rockville, MD won again in 1:44:27. Last year was 1:44:05. She will smile pleasantly but she really wanted Jane Poole'd record from two years ago of 1:43:48
After the race, runners bellied up to the trough outside the Tuscarora Mill Restaurant. They already wore the iced down washcloths as they picked through the ice for cooling drinks. The entertainment was watching the finish line as Ray DeFrees jogged up and down the hill in the final meters to hand off Old Glory to dozens of finishers, making for a great photo opportunity set up by Brightroom Photography. There was a band playing just below the finish line. Kenton Pattie won the random grand prize of two airline tickets.
Kyle Kinnally (22) of Ashburn, VA impresses with a 34:12 race in the 10K.
