The Rolling Stones rock band has a lyric, "I'll never be your beast of burden." Sometimes, commuting on foot-as a walker, runner, or bicyclist-can weigh one down with gear in case of inclement weather. A little blessing has hit the market in the form of a five ounce rain jacket that is convenient to carry, O2 Rainwear. 3M manufactures the Propore(TM) fabric, also used in surgical gowns, and RainShield produces the jackets and pants for outdoor enthusiasts.
During summer testing, O2 Rainwear felt soft against skin and was a source of warmth as storms raged. No rain moistened clothes worn underneath the jacket; the "shield" protected during downpours. When running in hot and humid conditions, perspiration did become a problem, however. For bicycling use, the jacket worked well and breathed with no condensation.
O2 Rainwear should be ideal for cold weather use. The jacket is inexpensive, a highly visible yellow, and handy to carry. Rough treatment did produce small tears.
