For the Washington Running Report

This second year race was a dandy. The perfectly gorgeous fall weather had racers running around in circles. The air was crisp and the sun was at times blinding as runners circled twice around the campus of George Mason University. In between loops, which were scenic - read rolling, the race scooted in to the nearby neighborhood for a challenging circuitous mile climaxing with a pace stopping hill just before mile three.

Only the top runners even got a glimpse of the winners coming out from there as they were going in. With $2,000 in prize money for the first three finishers, it was no surprise to see the prolific African runners dueling. Gurmessa Megerssa (known as Kumsa - his other name) continued his winning ways from last year winning handily in 24:06. Teen sensation Ezkay Sisay (#13) has been lighting up the track with three overall wins and three top three placings since Labor Day. Solomon Semunguse (#505), only a year older at twenty was a mere eyelash behind him for third place cash with a tying 24:33. Allen Carr (24) of Herndon, VA was the fourth runner faster than 25 minutes. He had set the tone this fall with fast 5Ks including an overall win at the Stone Ridge 5K.

As luck would have it, of the top thirteen finishers, four of them women, ten of them were from out of town. The next two spots were held by the masters best, Terry McLaughlin (47) of Spotsylvania, VA for the men and Alisa Harvey (42) of Manassas, VA for the women.

Those top four women have formed a corps of winning ways throughout the summer. Nineteen-year-old Belainesh Gebre (in photo) has already won six races from 5K to half marathon since the first of September. She needed all her skill to pull off the four second victory in 27:34 over Alemgena Desta. Desta had lost in three races with third place Hirut Mengistu (27:48) and fourth place Teyba Naser (27:55). Today she turned the tables on them both with 27:34. Naser seems to run more races than the others and her times would likely have seeded her second, though her overall victory last week in a cross country 6K was a mere six seconds ahead of the masters champion Harvey.

The age group prizes were nice gift certificates to restaurants and went two deep in five year age groups. A quick glance shows that nearly all the age group winners won easily, often by a few minutes.

After the race, there was an abundant supply of food, plenty more than was essential for the 434 finishers, exactly have men and half women. There was a well attended fun run/walk was one loop around Patriot's Circle (1.7 miles). Basking in the glorious sunshine after the race, runners were treated to myriad drinks as well as fruit, pretzels, and health bars. The goodie bag was truly stocked.

In his ninth race of the fall Lou Shapiro (66) of Silver Spring, MD served notice that he was the man to beat in his division. He eclipsed his Best of 2007 time by ten seconds, gliding home in 34:34. In fact, the only grandmaster ahead of him was Paul Bousel (54) of Alexandria, VA in 32:46.

For the women Elizabeth Starr (51) of Aldie, VA tacks on another win following last week's Stone Ridge 5K victory with a fine 38:18.

Peter Blank (in photo) just turned fifty-three on Friday so he treated himself to his 135th race of the year, finishing third in his division. Liz Jones (30) of Midland, VA just missed her best 8K by a few strides in 33:41 even after running three of this year's ten half marathons this year in the last month.

In photo below, Gurmessa Megerssa places easily with his number one seeding in a swift 24:06.
