Open Women
Williamsburg's Alison Holinka is queen of the women's open division this spring, a title she earned by being her best at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, a race that was very instrumental in determining the top women this ranking period. Holinka's 57:34 showing at the Cherry Blossom also represents the fastest time run by any woman in this division during the spring. Holinka had several other qualifying times as well, including a 36:15 at the Sallie Mae 10K and a 28:53 at the Shamrock 8K.
A 58:09 showing at the Cherry Blossom race was good enough for Alexandria's Heather Hanscom to earn a top 20 finish at that race, as well as runner-up honors this spring. Hanscom also had two overall race victories--a 16:54 win at the Shamrock 5K and a 35:27 performance at the Capitol Hill 10K.
There was quite a battle for third and fourth places. In the end, we have awarded Sharon Servidio, another woman well acquainted with the elite ranks of the open division, third place in these rankings because she had the next fastest 10K equivalent time. Servidio achieved this time at the Cherry Blossom, where she was just behind Hanscom, finishing in 58:44 for her fastest race of the season. She also managed a top five finish at the St. Patrick's Day 10K in 36:29.
Arlington's Casey Smith tore in behind Servidio at the Cherry Blossom, crossing the line in 58:49 for her fastest race of the season. However, to her credit, she won the St. Patrick's Day 10K over Servidio, and also beat Holinka at the Sallie Mae 10K.
Finally, rounding out the top five we have Marjan Huizing, who earned her slot by finishing third behind Smith and ahead of Servidio at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, running across the line in 36:02 for her best race of the season.

Patty Fulton of Silver Spring had the fastest time this spring; a fifth place 36:30 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K. In recognition of this, we have awarded her the top ranking in the women's sub- masters division. Fulton also won the Bright Beginnings 5K, which was an improperly (long) marked course, and was second at both the MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K and the Pike's Peek 10K.
Patsy Long ran 1:02:47 at the George Washington Parkway Ten Miler, which was good enough to earn the second place ranking this spring. Long was also just behind Fulton at Pike's Peek, where she finished fourth in the women's division with a time of 38:29.
Third in the rankings is Julie Thienel of Columbia who was first among the ranked women at Cherry Blossom, coming in just outside the top 50 in 1:05:49 for her fastest run of the season. Thienel got her second qualifying time at Clyde's American 10K, where she ran 41:15.
Racing around the southern reaches of our region we have Kendall Tata, whose 40:09 performance at the Elizabeth River Run 10K was enough to earn fourth place this spring. Tata was also on hand at the Shamrock 8K, where she finished in 32:48, and the Azalea Festival 8K, where she ran 32:36.
Finally, we have Reston's Kristin DiDomenico rounding out the top five runners, a feat she accomplished with two consistently fast times. At the Metro Run & Walk 5K for Women she ran 19:18, and at the Plaza America 5K, she ran a very comparable 19:24.

The 37:14 performance that Maria Spinnler put on at the Sallie Mae 10K was good enough to earn the top ranking this spring. It was also the fastest time run by any woman ranked in this division by more than a minute. Spinnler's second qualifying time was a fourth place finish, in 18:46 at the Metro Run & Walk 5K for Women.
Our second ranked runner earned her slot with the second fastest 10K equivalent time. Vanessa Cox ran 1:03:45 at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, for the best performance there by any woman ranked in the masters division; a performance which is backed up with a 39:45 at the Clyde's American 10K.
Laura Freix of Centreville had a speedy spring, turning in five qualifying times. One of these times was a 1:05:15 at Cherry Blossom, where she was just behind Cox. Her fastest race, however, and the grounds on which we have awarded her the third slot, was a 1:04:38 at the George Washington Parkway Ten Miler.
Jeanne Grillo raced to the finish at the Preakness 5K, where she finished in the top 20 with a time of 18:57 for her fastest race of the season, a performance worthy of fourth place.
Finally, in fifth place we find Pat Keating. Keating earns her spot with a valiant attempt at chasing Freix down at Cherry Blossom, however, she came up a little short, covering the course in 1:05:51. To her credit, Keating also had a 40:53 showing at the Clyde's American 10K, where she played runner-up to Cox.

Women 45 - 49
By a twist of fate, the top two women in this division had identical best 10K equivalent times this spring--at two different races. Betty Blank ran 41:35 at the Run vs. Row 10K, while Dorothy Winn ran 41:35 at the Elizabeth River Run 10K. Since the two women never ran head to head, it was very difficult to name a champion. In the end, however, we have given the top honors to Blank because she had four other qualifying times, whereas Winn only had two others. Blank also backed up her Run vs. Row performance with a 41:38 at the Capitol Hill 10K, to secure her top prize. Winn, to back up her performance, had a 33:08 at the Azalea Festival 8K and a 34:24 at the Shamrock 8K.
Third place this spring belongs to Shelley Ralston, who had a great showing at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, finishing just over a minute behind Blank, with a time of 1:11:39. Ralston backs up her third place finish with a 21:04 at the Shamrock 5K.
Mary Astrop ran a very impressive 3:22:16 at Washington's inaugural marathon, good enough to earn the fourth place ranking this spring. Astrop got her second qualifying time at the Richmond Race for the Cure, where she won her age division. Finally, rounding out the top five is Carol Talley who had her best showing at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, where she ran 44:05. Talley also had a 35:06 showing at the Shamrock 8K.

Women 50 - 54
Sandra Adams of Winchester is still the fastest woman over 50 on the roads, and, as such, she takes the top prize this spring. Adams earned her spot primarily by beating tough age group competition from Karen Erb at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where she finished in 1:11:42 for the fastest time run by any woman in this division. Adams also ran 44:50 at Pike's Peek, good enough for a top 20 overall finish.
Right behind Adams is Alexandria's Karen Erb, who had the second and third fastest times run by women over 50 this spring. She ran 1:13:21 at Cherry Blossom, to be the second ranked woman at that race. Erb also managed a 1:14:08 at the George Washington Parkway Classic.
Hailing from Norfolk we have Jeanne Kruger-Williams, who is our third place finisher, a slot she earns on the strength of a 44:55 showing at the Elizabeth River Run 10K and a 36:38 at the Shamrock 8K. Annapolis's Rose Malloy, who actually managed to top Kruger-Williams at the Shamrock 8K by coming in in 35:41 (Kruger Williams's slower showing), is our fourth ranked runner. Malloy's second time came at the Cherry Pit Ten Miler where she ran 1:18:54.
Finally, rounding out the top five we have Valerie Campbell, who had a 45:55 at the Pike's Peek 10K, for her fastest race of the year. Her second time was a slightly slower 1:16:36 at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler.

Women 55 - 59
Hideko Pirie of Leesburg is the women's 55-59 champion this spring, a title she earns by having the two fastest times turned in by ranked women during this ranking period. At the St. Patrick's Day 10K, Pirie ran 45:16 for her fastest run of the season. She also ran 46:49 at the Sallie Mae 10K, representing a time more than 30 seconds faster than the next fastest 10K equivalent time.
The next four places were all determined at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where a number of women in this division went head to head. Judith Harmony, who came all the way from Cincinnati, ran 1:18:45, and as a result we have awarded her the second place ranking. Just over a minute behind her was Dee Nelson, who crossed the line in 1:19:59, and thus earned herself the third place ranking.
Fourth and fifth places were even closer, with Lynn Hayes taking the fourth slot with a stellar 1:23:22 performance, placing her just over 30 seconds ahead of Mary Ellen Gonyea, who finished in 1:23:55 and must settle for a fifth place ranking in the spring rankings.

Women 60 - 64
Our winner in the women's 60-64 division this spring is no stranger to the top slot. Gaithersburg's Sharon Dolan is once again the victor in this division, a title she earned by running the top three times turned in by women ranked in this group--a 44:35 at Pike's Peek 10K, a 1:14:28 at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler and a 45:02 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K.
Less than a minute behind Dolan at the St. Patrick's Day race was Falls Church's Janice Stoodley, who crossed the line in exactly 46:00, for her best race this spring. Stoodley's other qualifying time was a 29:00 at the Metro Run & Walk 5K for Women.
Joan Coven of Williamsburg ran around the southern part of our region, turning in a spectacular showing at the Shamrock 8K, where she finished just outside the top 200, in 38:34, to beat age group competition from the likes of other ranked runners such as Betty Munden and Sylvia Boecker. Coven's best time, however, was an age group win at the Queen's Lake 5K, where she finished the course in 22:40.
Kathy Lewis has been awarded the fourth slot, in recognition of her being faster than anyone else out there. Lewis turned in a 24:27 at the May Day 5K and a 25:35 at the Mantua Raccoon 5K. Finally, the last berth in the top five runners in this bracket belongs to Barbara Szoradi, who was sharp at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, turning in a 1:25:21. Szoradi also ran 52:49 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K.

Women 65 - 69
Tami Graf is undoubtedly the winner in this division for the spring, taking all five of the top qualifying times run by ranked women. Graf ran a 1:27:21 (52:30 10K equivalent) at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, probably the most important race of the season, for her best showing this spring. To back up that time, Graf was present at other big races, including the St. Patrick's Day 10K (55:39) and the Sallie Mae 10K (56:23).
Fredericksburg's Betty Dameron is the runner-up in this division for the spring. Dameron, like Graf, was on hand at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, where she had her best performance, running 1:00:05. She had her second best time at the Cherry Blossom, where she finished inside the top 2000 in a time of 1:40:01.
A 1:43:47 at the Cherry Blossom was enough to earn Smithfield's Pat Ewell the third place ranking. Ewell earned her second time at the Carter's Grove 8 Miler, running 1:26:08. Betsy Levin grabs the fourth place ranking with a 1:03:05 at the Capitol Hill 10K for her best showing of the season. Finally, rounding out the division is Reston's Hiroko Hunt, who had her best race at the Metro Run & Walk 5K, crossing the line in 35:18.

Women 70 - 74
It was a tough call to determine which of the two women earning a ranking in this division should take the top spot this spring. Jacqueline O'Neil of Washington ran the fastest time this season, turning in a 32:49 at the Cassidy & Pinkard Brain Tumor 5K; however, she lost to age group rival Lee Glassco at the St. Patrick's Day 10K. As a result, we have awarded Glassco the top slot and O'Neil is a close second. Glassco ran 1:10:39 at the St. Patrick's Day race, beating O'Neil by almost two minutes; however, her fastest race was a 1:09:38 at the Pike's Peek 10K

Women 75 & Over
This spring, two women ran often enough to earn the two qualifying times required to earn a ranking. Leading the charge is Rockville's Kay Morrison, who had an impressive six qualifying times, including two top age group showings at big races--the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where she ran 1:48:14, and the St. Patrick's Day 10K, where she covered the course in 1:05:09.
Hedy Marque is the other woman in this division to earn a ranking, a feat she accomplished with three qualifying times. Her best race was also the Cherry Blossom, where the 84-year-old managed a very impressive 1:54:03.
