Navy 5 Mile Captures Hearts of Area Runners

For the Washington Running Report
Life is good. It is great to be an American enjoying all the wonderful things that make this country great. When the color guard smartly marches up and Eric Makovsky (he ran last year third overall in 27:57) sings our National Anthem, it makes you proud to be part of the greatest country in the world. Just as the Army 10 miler started small some 25 years ago and became the largest 10 miler in the country, the Navy 5 Mile started six years ago with about 300 runners. Last year they had 918. This year they had nearly 1100 finishers.
When you get things right people want to be a part of it. Sure it is part lucky that the race happened on the best weather weekend of the year. With the thermometer hovering around 50 as runners began arriving at the North Pentagon parking lot, it was certain it would be a great racing day. No wind and low humidity had some runners forgetting that it is still summer, albeit the last embers only.
By the time runners had returned past the start/finish line arch just past mile one, there was clear evidence of perspiration. Rolling up the exit onto Washington Boulevard some runners were as yet unaware of the monster elevation challenge that tested runners for the first half of mile three. The sign at the base that said, "giter done" forewarned us. While it was comforting to charge down the valley in the second half of that mile, the repeat exam which started the fourth mile left many runners eager to get back home. It was nice to know that the final mile was level and slightly downhill so that racers did not lose much momentum charging back down to the parking.
The course listed as flat and fast. That was true of the first and last mile. Race winner Benjamin Ingram of Baltimore, MD scouted the course and was prepared for the two hills. Runner-up Nick Crowell of Olalla, WA did not. Ingram noted that Crowell told him he may have started out too fast. Ingram gauged his effort based on the hilly middle of the race. As runners dogged it up the first hill there were two pairs of lead runners. Crowell was two strides back of Ingram. About thirty seconds further elite submaster Edi Turco of Arlington, VA was escorting top master Bill Bray (44) of Fairfax, VA to the finish. Ingram's 26:37 was close to the event record set last year by Phillip Parry (45) in 26:21. Steve Anderson, the top grandmaster slowed from last year's 29:03 to 29:53 but moved up a place to sixth overall
Before the race third place Beth Clokey of Fort Myers, VA noted that the weather was perfect. Her friends wished her good luck, and then she bolted away from them to cruise through the first mile in 6:30. Makely Lyon (24) of Arlington, VA ran away with the race in 31:54. Masters do well with this race. Martha Merz has both masters and event records in 2006 with 30:39. Grandmaster Ofelia Perrotti won it all in 2007 and was runner-up last year. This year the runner-up was a master as well, Sandra Griffith of Upper Marlboro, MD. Susan Benante (45) of Arlington, VA just held off another grandmaster Aileen Moffet (52) of Washington, DC 36:28 to 36:44 to take the top masters award.
After the race there was an abundance of food and drink, enough to feed an Army or a Navy. Subway did there thing with fort different varieties of sub, there was unlimited bottles of PowerAde and Dasani water. Apples and bananas, muffins and cookies were among the many treats to refuel. The parking lot could easily accommodate three times as many runners and there were plenty of portajohns. The course was well marshaled and large mile markers, correctly placed, were well displayed.
