Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Women Summer 2009

Open Women

Crystal City Twilight 5K 16:22, 10K = 34:05

Christine Ramsey (26) of Baltimore, MD took the runner-up spot with two big-race overall wins - Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K and Kentlands/Lakelands 5K.

Except for last fall when she finished third, Hirut Mandefro of Silver Spring, MD has won each ranking period from last summer to this summer. She started with a modest 16:46 overall win at the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K (just one second faster than her 2008 Kentlands-Lakelands 5K). That passed up Christine Ramsey's opening salvo 16:58 at the MCVET 5K in May that she followed with a 16:40 win at the African American 5K in July.

Last year Mandefro ran 27:49 at the Rockville Twilight 8K for second place and this year she passed on the race, Ramsey won it in 27:13 followed by Samia Akbar in 27:32.  Mandefro would need a quick answer. The following week at the Crystal City Twilighter 5K she bounded to the top winning in 16:22. Elena Orlova, who finished third behind Akbar at Twilight in 28:01 was third in Crystal City in 17:11 ahead of Akbar's 17:17. The final weekend at Kentlands-Lakelands 5K Ramsey closed in by winning in 16:35, but did not catch Mandefro for the crown. Orlova passed Akbar for third with her 16:40 runner-up placing.

With seven overall wins, Phebe Ko came in fifth place. She won the Leesburg 20K in 1:14:33 which earned her a spot on the 2009 September/October cover. Muluye Gurma had three solid races including two 17:18 5Ks. Seventh place Malika Mejdoub started the period with two runner-up performances:  MCVET 5K in 17:17 followed by the 10K in 38:42.

Julia Rudd takes eighth place, never finishing lower than third in any of her races. She won it all at the Hartwood 10 Miler in 60:10. Ninth place Briana Whalley finished fourth at the star studded Rockville Twilight 8K in 28:30.

Sixty-nine women earned a place in the Elite rankings.

19 & Under Women

Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 29:54, 10K = 37:57

There were a lot of cross country races for the teens this summer. Times and exact distances can be hard to figure, so head-to-head competition is even more dominant. Laine Converso's cross country 5K was the 117th best time but she takes the division for a masterful mid-season Rockville Twilight 8K win in 29:54.

Stephanie Frenchik of Virginia Beach, VA surfaces in second place by virtue of three overall wins. The Ed Lowery Cross Country Back 5K in 19:03 made her a contender. Then in mid-August at the Surfer's Healing 5K she earned the runner-up spot with 18:33. That passed third place Courtney Waldhauser's second place finish at the Bel Air Town 5K Run in 18:48. Waldhauser had won the Maryland Half Marathon in late May with her 1:26:46. Frenchik's insurance win number three was at the East Coast Surfing Championship 5K where she finished in 18:57.

Chrissy Sane ran the Clifton Caboose 5K in 19:02 for fourth. Kaila Blackburn was fifth thanks to her second overall in Richmond in 19:12.  With 57 runners, this is the second largest division after the Open division.

Five women made the Elite division.

35-39 Women

Kentlands-Lakelands 5K 16:10, 10K = 34:42

Dolores Ware ran a 1:31:08 to take 4th in her age group at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon and finished 13th in her division.

With four of her nine races overall wins, Elena Orlova is a threat to be the overall winner. Indeed, the soon-to-be masters runner keeps getting faster. At 39, she met top masters runner Danielle Russell head on at the Tim Harmon 5K and won solidly in 17:46. She met Russell again at the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Mile and won it all in 22:59, nearly a minute ahead of masters champion Alisa Harvey. Later, she bested Naoko Ishibe at the Leesburg 20K by nearly a mile in 1:17:34 to Ishibe's 1:21:16. She had two overall wins on hilly courses:  the Larry Noel 12K in 45:33 and the Run Through History 10K in 37:25.

Hilary Cairns seemed a solid choice with four races and four overall wins. Her best race may have been the DCRRC 5K in 18:15. She had run the Maya Angelou 5K on a dead flat course but puddles from the previous night's rain prevented the full course from being used.  Her 18:02 win was probably about 100 meters short of a 5K. Kristi Markowicz bookended the period with an overall win at the Yorktown 5K in May at 18:25 and then capped second place winning it all the final weekend at the Arlington Police, Fire, and Sheriff 9-11 5K in 17:56.

Mary Davison was second overall at Maya Angelou 5K in 18:38. That matched closely with Laura Zeilinger's Leesburg 20K in 1:21:49. Davison earns the fourth spot, finishing second overall at Leesburg in 39:42 for the next fastest time and ran a nice 31:19 at the Rockville Twilight 8K in July. Zeilinger's second effort was 41:12 at Lawyers Have Heart 10K.

Nine women made the Elite Division.

40-44 Women

Lawyers Have Heart 10K 37:44

The masters queen Alisa Harvey has been on top of the division every time she races. Now, at age 43, the victory is not as dominating but it is still there. Runner-up Danielle Russell started the action in May with an overall win at the Herndon 5K in 18:25. Julia Smith nearly matched that a week later winning everything in Belcamp, MD at the Run for Shelter 5K in 18:27.

Meanwhile, Harvey started slower with her overall win at the Waterfront Festival 5K in 18:36.  A week later Harvey showed up with the second fastest masters 10K of 2009, winning Lawyers Have Heart in 37:44. That same day Russell kept up the pressure, winning at the Tim Harmon 5K in 18:14.  Two weeks later they met at the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler where Harvey prevailed 23:56 to 24:12.

As the summer progressed, Harvey took on Naoko Ishibe at the Autism Speaks 5K, winning 18:10 to 18:51. As July progressed Harvey took on Denise Knickman at the RockvilleTwilight 8K where she hung on to win 30:48 to 30:57.

Julia Smith cemented her third place spot winning everything at the Mental Wellness 5K in 18:44. Ishibe had an excellent 1:21:16 at the Leesburg 20K to support fourth place. Harvey had an easy time winning with a slightly less impressive overall win in the heat in 38:50.  She normally struggles with extreme heat. Knickman won it all in the longest race of the period, the Charm City 20 Miler in 2:15:29.

Eight women made the Elite division.

45-49 Women

Charlottesville 4 Miler 25:01, 10K = 40:07

Sheryl Kline (47) of Arnold, MD makes a top ten finish with seven qualities races.

Last summer's runner-up Linda Foley was back as was this spring's runner-up Cindy Conant.  The champion, Martha Merz, however, was absent. It would take the Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) to separate these two.

Foley was tops at four major races, including the Tim Harmon 5K in 19:33 and the PRR Twilight 4 Miler in 25:32. She tapered out at the Kentlands-Lakelands 5K in 20:13. Conant ran well in five races, including the fastest qualifier, winning the Rockville Twilight 8K in 32:00. She added a second overall at the torture test River Rumble Half Marathon and a solid Capital Crescent 5K in 19:52. Conant takes the crown with a MRF of 67 ahead of Foley's 47.

The next three spots were extremely close. Robyn Humphrey ran the prestigious Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:08:19. Carol Krill matched her to the second at the other 10-mile race held a week earlier, the Hartwood 10 Mile. Eileen Abbott was the overall winner at the Run for the Future Lucy Corr Village 5K in 19:42, a smidgeon ahead of them.

On to their second races for clarification, Abbot added six more age group wins including the Pony Pasture 5K in 19:58. Humphrey added three wins and a 20:12 at the HCS Women's Distance Festival 5K to fall just off the pace. Krill ran the Run for Shelter 5K in 21:12 to retain fifth place.  Darcy Strouse is sixth with a fine Kentlands-Lakeland's 5K in 19:52 was followed closely by Pamela Lovett who had bested Abbott at the Cul de Sac 5K 19:55 to 20:14.

50-54 Women

New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K 18:46, 10K = 39:04

Erica Rubenstein (50) of Potomac, MD enters the grandmaster division with a solid effort at the Baltimore 10M.

The division grew by 50% to 44 qualifiers. Last year's summer and this spring's champion Leisa Villani did not return. The new champion, Lee DiPietro, is also known for disappearing.  She was absent this spring but came back strong with the fastest half marathon, finishing second overall at the end of May in 1:27:34. DiPietro then ran the top 10K in early June with 39:55. She capped off the period with a 5K masters win in Baltimore in 18:46, which would have been fast enough to have won the crown last summer.

Debi Bernardes has other fish to fry as well and chose to run this summer, just not a lot.  She was second overall in two races, Run for Shelter 5K in 19:59 and the Heritage Festival 5 Mile in 33:13. Both just missed qualifying her for the Open division and then she found a pool, and bicycle and vanished.

Big races bring out big efforts. Dee Dee Loughran returned to Leesburg to erase her own course record with a nifty 1:29:19 moving away from the pack after a 20:48 5K in June. Pat Wilkerson had a solid win at the ZOOMA Annapolis 10K in 43:43. Three weeks later she had a tougher time at the slightly long Baltimore 10 Mile in 1:15:35 then righted herself admirably at the Annapolis 10 Miler with a 1:11:12 finish to take the fourth spot. Susie Lewis cornered the fifth spot with a couple of fast Cul de Sac 5Ks. Her best was 20:45.

Lee DiPietro made the Elite division.

55-59 Women

Lawyers Have Heart 10K 43:50

Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA likes to think of this division as hers.  She has fended off a lot of swift runners to control it since she entered this age bracket. This period Blank had the fastest seven times including her Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 43:50. That was more than four minutes faster than Maria Shields who won the Dawson's Day 10K in June. Blank, a DC Roadrunner, ran three of their four milers successfully including a second person overall at the age handicapped race. Despite struggling at the often well-heated 20K in Leesburg, she still won easily.

Shields secured her runner-up spot besting third place Patricia Snodgrass at the Annapolis 10 Miler, 1:20:14 to 1:23:03. Snodgrass also was ranked in the 50-54 division.

Often a runner has one really good race when the weather turns for the better and that is exactly what happened for Wendy Golden who raced a fine 31:03 in the last weekend at the Charlottesville 4 Miler to earn the fourth spot. She was just ahead of Linda Gulick and fifth place Mary Brainerd who had bested Gulick at the Cul de Sac 5K in Richmond 23:55 to 24:04. Gulick also ran the Moonlight 4 Miler in 31:08.

60-64 Women

Chestertown Tea Party 10 Mile 1:20:06, 10K = 48:08

The division increased to 37 qualifiers with many of the top runners only running one or two ranking periods a year.  Everyone came out this summer.  Last period's champion, Alice Franks, started off early and gathered up nine age group wins. In early June she fell behind fourth place Marge Rosasco of Joppa, MD though she won the Capital Crescent 5K in 23:38. Rosasco took out the competition at the crown jewel of the northeast, the Bel Air Town 5K Run in 23:31. Callie Edmundson posted a 23:43 at the Run for Shelter 5K

Rose Malloy of Annapolis, MD had already taken the crown the first weekend, crossing the Bay to win the Chestertown Tea Party 10 Mile in 1:20:06. Franks' second effort in June with a 48:41 at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K provided a solid argument to move past Rosasco, whose response the next week was not quite enough, finishing the Baltimore Women's Classic in 23:39. In the meantime, Malloy notched the top 10K, winning the Dawson's Day in 48:27. In July she set the standard for the 5K at the hometown Women's Distance Festival in 23:08. A week later Edmundson took over the runner-up spot with her Mental Wellness 5K in 23:19.

65-69 Women

MCRRC Run for Roses 5K 24:29, 10K = 50:58

Dee Nelson of Gaithersburg (profiled in the September/October 2009 issue) has had a firm grip on the division since entering this age group last fall, especially since her chief rival, Joan Coven of Williamsburg, VA, has not been racing as much. Nelson had her best of five Women's Distance Festival races, winning her hometown MCRRC Run for the Roses 5K in 24:29. Her next three best 5Ks were all within four seconds, leaving the division solidly in her hands. Nelson has averaged 60 races or more in the last dozen years and seems to get stronger all the time.

Janice Hicks of Bristol, VA came on strong after August with a 27:30 5K at Railroad Days and saved her best race for the final weekend at the Rock ‘n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon in 2:09:39.

Third place Nancy Jakubec, who had won last summer, finished just ahead of Ellen Hocheder with a 27:56 at the Pony Pasture 5K. Hocheder had started the period at the MCVETS 5K in 27:58 for her best effort.

This division continues to grow with 22 qualifiers.

Komen Global Race for the Cure 5K 27:30, 10K = 57:15

Brenda Murray (70) of Chevy Chase, MD made a top twenty finish with her last race in the 65-69 division a the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K

Tami Graf has been in control of her division for most of the last decade. She has yet to lose her division in a race, earning 13 golds during the summer. This time, however, she was relegated to second place.  Ernestine Shepherd of Baltimore, MD, who was idle this spring, blasted forth with the top four qualifiers. She had her top race in July at the African American Festival 5K in 28:38. A week later, while Graf was getting her best time at one of the many Women's Distance Festivals in 30:13, Shepherd was winning the Pikesville 5K in 29:02.

Nancy Fraser did not get her summer underway until the last weekend of the period but her lone race at the Charlottesville Women's 4 Miler put her in striking range for the runner-up spot. Third place Arloween Garland had been the nemesis for Graf when they were in their 60s but now, at age 70, she had only the 20th fastest time following Graf and Shepherd.  Her best race was the Hartwood 10 Mile in 1:58:11.

75-79 Women

Schoolhouse Days 5K 33:43, 10K = 1:10:12

Jacqueline O'Neil and Yvonne Aasen have been the major players in this division. Aasen won last summer while O'Neil capped off a victory this spring.

In July, Joanne Mallet of Rockville, MD, who has been in charge of the women's distance festivals for many years, moved into this division. She strode over to Aasen's territory and bolted to the lead winning the Annapolis Strider's Women's Distance Festival 5K in 35:29.

From the far corner of the region, Bristol, which borders Virginia and Tennessee, comes Harriet Locke. She raced to victories with two fast 5Ks in the first week of August and her best race was the School House Days 5K in 33:43.

Rock ‘n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon 3:10:33, 10K = 1:26:06

Martha Trimmer, always prolific, was the only runner in this division to have competed in two races. Her best effort of five 5Ks was the Race for our Kids where she finished in 47:36. Trimmer repeats her division win from the spring.  Last summer's champion, Helen Schley, only had one event and that was the Frederick Steeplechasers Women's Distance Festival 5K where she ran 46:55.
