2010 Winter Rankings
The Start of Another Decade
(November 16, 2009 - March 7, 2010)
At the bottom of the page is a list of the races we will use for the Winter Ranking period (Contain a ranked runner time). Dozen of other races are perused but did not have any Ranked Runner times.
To be updated weekly.
If a race is not listed and you have the results, send them james@runwashington.com to be included.
By James Moreland
"With your chrome heart shiningin the sun,
Long may you run."
Neil Young 1976
The severe weather conditions ended a five-year streak of larger numbers of runners every season, for every year. More than a dozen races were postponed and more than 30 races were canceled right away, which provided us with some new statistics to add to the breakdown below.
Moreland Statistics
* No-show rates went up as high as 30% for some races.
* Two full weekends were shot and although there were 11% more participants with 80,179 and more major races with 37 total, there were still 20 fewer races and 10% fewer ranked runners.
* Only 25 races had more than 10% of their runners ranked.
* Only one race of those races, the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, had more than 500 finishers. It was the second largest with 99 ranked runners.
* Easily the most competitive race was the Battle of the Potomac 5K with nearly 50% of the 320 finishers qualifying.
* Jingle All the Way 10K continues to dominate with 83 ranked runners, while the Bethesda YMCA Turkey Chase 10K had the most runners.
* There were 22 10Ks and four races had more than 1,000 finishers.
* The 5K distance was well represented with 81 races.
* Of the ten 5K races with more than 1,000 finishers, nine were traditional Thanksgiving events. The YMCA race in Fredericksburg had the most ranked runners with 66, closely followed by the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K with 63, and the Drumstick Dash with 60, while the Governor's Land 5K was the most competitive with relatively few ranked runners but they comprised 19.3% of the field.
* As with 2009, there were 17 races that had more than 1,000 finishers.
* Forty-four races had 20 or more qualifying times. Still, the top 20 races had more than 40 qualifiers.
* In a huge drop off, only 776 men and 543 women ran at least one qualifying time.
* In the women's division, Linda Foley, 48, was the oldest runner and Halsey Sinclair, 20, was the youngest runner to qualify for the Elite Division.
* For the men, Edmund Burke, 40, was the only master to make the elite division. Darren Simpson and Tim Smith, at 19, were the youngest.
* In all of the races combined, the percentage of finishers that were ranked runners dropped below 4% for the first time.
Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone, reported at the top of each section, is the fastest qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. (MRF) is for the Moreland Racing Factor. Races Bolded are major races with either 500 finishers or more than 20% Ranked Runners.
Now, let us see who made the top.

Rankings Explained - What It Is, Who Does It, How We Do It, and Where We are Going
The goal of the runner rankings is to rank the best runners of Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, in five-year age groups, for the purpose of stimulating competition in the Washington region. Runners are ranked only according to performances in rated races. To be rated, a race must meet the following criteria:
* Take place in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia
* Full results listed on the Washington Running Report Web site
* Must list age (and preferably also city and state of residence) of all runners
* Standard distance--5K, 4-mile, 8K, 10K, 12K, 15K, 10-mile, 20K, 1/2 Marathon, 25K, 30K, 20-mile, or Marathon
* Road race or cross-country
To be included, a race must meet all of the above criteria. There will be no exceptions. If you place well in a race and want it included in the rankings, be sure to ask the race director to e-mail the complete results to the Washington Running Report at james@runwashington.com so the race can be posted on the WRR Web site and counted in the runner rankings.
Runners will be ranked by age divisions for both men and women, with the divisions being open, 19 & under, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80 & over.
The rankings are established using a nearly completely objective rating procedure. A preliminary sort, followed by an intensive analysis of competitive results, forms the rankings. The preliminary sort is based on number of qualifying marks and best times. The final ranking is based on head-to-head competitive results against the other top placers (50%), with time playing a major but secondary role (40%). Our general philosophy is that competition is about beating other runners, and we intend to place an increased emphasis on competitive results.
To qualify for the end-of-year rankings, top priority will go to runners who qualify in two ranking periods. A preliminary sort, followed by a more involved analysis of competitive results, also forms these rankings. The preliminary sort is based on seasonal rankings and best times. The final ranking is again based on head-to-head competitive results, with time playing a secondary role, though at times a deciding role. One special race can at times put a runner over the top, though consistency is a valued asset.
Qualifying times are set in each age division for the 10K, and then adjusted for other distances. I believe in a constant time so that, while a runner may not make the top ten, he or she may consider himself or herself a ranked runner. My primary concern is that of believability. There should be few surprises. Competitiveness will always find a few disputes. Most runners know whom they can best and who remains unbeatable. The rankings should fairly reflect that. If you have comments and questions or would like to get a more complete explanation of individual rankings contact me at james@runwashington.com.
