Jingle All the Way 10K: Holiday Cheer in a Light Rain

For the Washington Running Report
Cold! A paltry 36 degrees at the 7:45 a.m. race start.
Dreary! A light mist developed into a steady drizzle by the finish. And those conditions were considerably better than the dreaded "wintery mix" forecast.
Nonetheless, a record crowd of more than 3,700 finishers frolicked through the area's merriest 10K, most attired in some form of holiday garb, including bells, antlers, Santa hats, and one entourage that included a fully-suited Santa in a sleigh with four reindeer-runners leading the way.
The day's soggy conditions and season's abundant distractions presented a multitude of excuses for lollygagging, but many still managed to race well.
"The weather was perfect," race winner Bert Rodriguez (in photo) said without a trace of irony.
And why shouldn't he feel that way? Rodriguez ran a personal best 31 minutes 8 seconds for his biggest win ever--he finished second in last year's Jingle 10K in 31:13.
"It's about time," Rodriguez said of his victory. "I was thinking about that event record [which he missed by four seconds] coming down the stretch."
Rodriguez (30), an area racing stalwart from Arlington, took a solo lead after one mile, leaving Wilson Komen (32), from Washington, and Alex Battaglino (23), from Baltimore, to battle for second and third. Their efforts ended in a photo finish at 31:51, with the taller Komen leaning to earn the runner-up spot. Battaglino, a former Wesleyan (CT) College runner, will make his marathon debut at Houston on January 17.
The women's race came down to sprint finish between two former collegiate all-Americans, Maggie Infeld, (photo right, 23), from Georgetown, and Katie Read (23), from the University of Virginia. Infeld used her miler's speed to hold off Read by one second, 34:14 to 34:15; both women were faster than the former event record of 35:26 set by Vanessa Hunter in 2007.
"I was trying to recapture that feeling of racing in college," said Infeld, who finished fifth at 1,500 meters in the NCAA final last June, "that and trying to hold it together." Infeld, a first-year medical student at Georgetown, races "when I can fit it in," she said; she finished second in 17:07 at the Page's Run 5K in October.
Read knocked 40 seconds off her Veterans Day 10K time on the same course one month earlier, but again finished second. "I feel good about the way I ran," Read said. "Obviously, I wanted to win, but the time is solid." Read ran 33:54 for 10,000 meters and finished 10th on the track at NCAA nationals in 2007.
Veena Reddy took third in 37:06; Reddy was also third at Veterans Day in 36:48. She is prepping for the Houston Marathon.
Area newcomer Peggy Yetman (41), from Leesburg, surprised many with a fourth-place finish in 37:18, good for the masters win. Yetman, an accomplished triathlete, recently moved with her husband Chris from southeast Texas.
"This time of year generally means recovery for me," said Yetman, who completed her third Hawaii Ironman triathlon in October. "I'm doing some cross-training now, but mostly I'm recovering, mentally and physically."
Greg Cauller (50), from York, PA, won the men's masters division in 35:43, beating--and shaming--all the men in their forties.
As for Santa, a.k.a. Geoffrey Kintzer, his cardboard sleigh and four all-too-lively reindeer, the troupe of them took time off from a busy month to log a few extra miles. "It's not the sleigh that slows me down," Kintzer said. "It's the reindeer." The friends and training partners--"fueled by cupcakes," said one of the maligned reindeer--finished comfortably in just over an hour before enjoying the post-race festivities, no matter the weather.
