Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Women Fall 2009
Open Women
Army 10-Miler 55:25, 10K = 33:18
In four overall victories, Samia Akbar, 27, from Herndon VA made it look easy with dominating times.
Hirut Mandefro looked to be the favorite and it is hard to argue with six races and six overall wins. She started off lowering her time at the PVI Runfest 5K to 16:26 from last year's 17:14, and then she loped off a second at the Star Kid 8K to 27:53, for her second best race. In Potomac, at Page's Run 5K, she held off Maggie Infeld on a tough course with a wicked second mile to win by two seconds in 17:05.
If you want make royalty, there are two big races in the fall---the Army 10-Miler and the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K. If you win either of these contests then you should expect to be crowned. Not only did Samia Akbar win these races, she pulverized the record at the Army 10-Miler with a world class time of 55:25 and she made it look easy as she took the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K title by more than a minute in 33:40.
Katie Read steps into the runner-up spot. She ran the third fastest time ever at the Army 10-Miler in 56:39 and placed second among the women. Then, at the Veterans Day 10K, she cranked out an excellent 34:55. Fourth place Muluye Gurmu got too close for comfort finishing third in 57:20, nearly passing Mandefro. Indeed, with her powerful 2:49:48 victory at the Marine Corps Marathon she might have, but she was trounced by Mandefro at the Star Kid 8K.
Fifth place Christine Ramsey won the Parks Half Marathon with an excellent time of 1:16:30. She also ran another half marathon at Baltimore, but perhaps both races were a little too close together. While she was third overall, her time of 1:21:37 must have been disappointing.
Sixth place Elena Orlova had two really nice half marathons. She finished second overall at the Parks Half Marathon in 1:18:14 on a course that is mostly downhill and often very hot and humid. Orlova ended the fall with a much-improved second overall at the McDonald's Half Marathon in Richmond in 1:16:59. Take note: In 2010, Orlova will joining the masters ranks.
Maggie Infeld earns seventh winning the King of the Road 5K in 16:50. Ilona Barvanova was third overall at the SunTrust Richmond Marathon with a 2:47:04 race, good enough for the next spot. Ninth place Emily Potter was the last runner faster than an hour at the Army 10-Miler. Phebe Ko squeaks by Renee High's 60:20 at the Army 10-Miler with an overall win at the National Press Club 5K in 17:25.
In all, 60 runners made the division.

19 & Under Women
Vinton Fall Festival 5K 18:38, 10K = 38:48
In this ranking period, only division champion Melissa Saunders made it to the Elite division. She took on the challenging Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K in 20:04 after winning at the competitive PVI Runfest 5K in 19:41. Then, she sealed the deal to top the teens at the Stone Ridge 5K in 19:29. Ava Farrell had a fine time at the speedy Ellen's Run 5K in 19:54. Her second best race was in the same side of town at the Somerset Back-to-School 8K in 34:43.
Third place Brittney Rooks overwhelmed those two races with eight division wins, including an overall victory at the Rockville 5K in 20:03. All eight of her races were faster than Farrell's Somerset Back-to-School 8K time. Surprisingly, Rooks finished her ninth best race there in a dismal 36:18. A week later she ran the Down's Park 5 Mile in 33:26 and the same weekend blitzed a Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) Race to End Women's Cancer Half Marathon in 1:37:07.

35-39 Women
McDonald's Half Marathon 1:16:59, 10K = 34:47
Tenth ranked sub master Dolores Ware from southern Virginia will be taking on the masters division in 2010.
Elena Orlova is honing her skills and her winning ways and will soon be joining the ranks of the masters. Last year she lost the division to Cate Fenste but this year she upped the ante by improving her Parks Half Marathon by more than six minutes. Third place Brenda Schrank was the top sub-masters at the marathon in 3:00:32.
In October, Orlova ran the Home Run 5K in 17:37 while Ilona Barvanova finished second overall in the companion 10K with her time of 36:18. Barvanova got greedy after a fine Charlottesville Fall Classic 10K in 35:49, well ahead of Orlova's 36:56. The very next day she almost caught Orlova at the Goblin Gallop 5K, finishing 17:40 to 17:41.
In the final weekend of scoring, Orlova put away the division for good with a fabulous McDonald's Half Marathon in Richmond where she ran 1:16:59. Barvanova finished third overall at the SunTrust Richmond Marathon in 2:47:04. Then, for a little oomph, Orlova cranked out a 17:08 at the King of the Road 5K.
Brenda Schrank also earned her third spot winning at the Army 10-Miler in 62:16 ahead of fourth place Laura Zeilinger's 62:48. Zeilinger also ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 3:01:02. Mary Davison wins fifth thanks to Army 10-Miler time of 64:09.

40-44 Women
Army 10-Miler 60:35, 10K= 36:24
Alisa Harvey only slowed down a teensy bit, but it was enough to open the floodgates. Her Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K in 37:36 was good enough for seventh overall and would have beaten her best time when she won the division in the summer. It was not enough, however, as new master Kristen Till roared home in 36:49 for fourth overall beating her. And yet, even that was not enough for Till to win the division.
At the Army 10-Miler, where Harvey holds the masters record and won it all with 59:00, she settled for the third master spot in 1:02:33. Elena Kaledina strode to the top of the pile with a scintillating 60:35. Still, the battle is not over. Kaledina's second effort was a 37:49 10K in Charlottesville. Her third best race was on the very hilly Home Run 10K in 38:33. Till's second race in September was a second overall 5K in 18:59.
Suzanne Himes improved on her third place finish at the Army 10-Miler with a very nice 3:00:59 at the Marine Corps Marathon. Fifth place Denise Knickman runs about 30 races a year and typically wins at least half of them. Her best race was a victorious BRRC NCR Trail Half Marathon in 1:26:21 and she also ran the Under Armour Baltimore Marathon in 3:05:23.

45-49 Women
Army 10-Miler 61:57, 10K = 37:14
A regular racer with the hometown Colonial Road Runners, Connie Glueck from Williamsburg finished in 15th place in the 45-49 division. This division was again the largest with 44 qualifiers. Linda Foley was runner-up last period and last fall so it seemed to be her spot for now. The Army 10-Miler had a lot of pull in determining the winners. Foley ran a credible 1:05:49 for second place. Danielle Russell launched her début into the division with an excellent 61:57. That was faster than former champion and three-time masters winner Alisa Harvey. Harvey, still in the youngest masters division, returned the favor at the Veterans Day 10K. Still, nobody here was going to touch Russell's 37:54.
Fifth place Cindy Conant, last period's champion, was next in 40:42 just ahead of fourth place Pamela Lovett who finished in 41:01. While Russell added two sub-6 minute pace 5Ks, Foley upended Conant at the inaugural Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) Race to End Women's Cancer Half Marathon, 1:28:14 to 1:30:04. Lovett, who was also behind sixth place Sharon Baptiste-Johnson's Army 10-Miler of 1:07:49, glided into third overall with a nifty City Point 5K River Run in 19:12. Laura Shannon took fourth with her 1:29:31 Maymount Half Marathon, good for third overall.

50-54 Women
Under Armour Baltimore Marathon 3:02:17, 10K = 38:58
Grandmaster Pat Wilkerson from Columbia, MD won her spot with a solid Baltimore Marathon in 3:40:28.Lee DiPietro was again the only grandmaster to make the Elite division. She started the ranking period with an overall win at the Knights of Columbus 5K in 19:16. Although it did not match her summer race times, it was nearly three minutes (in 10K equivalence) ahead of runner-up Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico who had run the Hilton 5K in 20:37. Last year DiPietro took the title winning the Under Armour Baltimore Marathon in 3:02:18 and this year she beat that time by one second, 3:02:17.
Castillo-D'Amico added a win at the Oyster Pointer 5K in 20:44 to assure her second place. Allison Suckling, a former division champion, placed third. She played around with a viable 35:28 at the Kensington 8K and added a couple of 7-minute pace 5Ks. Then, as a trick, she treated herself to a swift 34:00 at the Run! Geek! Run! on Halloween to close in on the runner-up spot.
Lisa Turney had a marvelous 1:12:24 at the Greenway Memory 10 Mile to earn fourth place. Richmond's Betty Harrison ran her hometown Capitol 10 Mile for fifth place.

Army 10-Miler 1:12:28, 10K= 43:33
Perennial champion Betty Blank used the Army 10-Miler again this year as her ticket to the top even though any of her other three races would have done the trick. She was the only woman to break 22 minutes in the 5K, racing the Clarendon Day 5K in 21:10. Her third best race was the Run! Geek! Run! 8K in 35:16. It was certainly a solid race but she did run 34:03 last year. Noteworthy: a rival from the 50-54 division, Alison Suckling, ran 34:00 and next year will enter Blank's division.
Kiki Sweigart of McLean, VA is already here. New to the rankings, she dove right in with a powerful Parks Half Marathon, finishing in 1:42:39. That was enough to scoot by last period's runner-up, Maria Shields, who had raced the Run 4 Shelter 5K in 22:40 the day before. Shields encored with the Down's Park 5 Mile in 36:58 in November to stay close. Sweigart ran the SunTrust Richmond Marathon to age group victory in 3:40:47.
Fourth place Roseanna Norton ate up the Tidewater region with five age group wins--nearly all 5Ks--to garner fourth place. Fifth place Patricia Gilley was first at the Capitol 10 Miler in Richmond with her 1:21:54 and she edged Patricia Snodgrass who ran the Down's Park 5 Mile in 39:12.

Army 10-Miler 1:18:56, 10K= 47:26
The top two runners from last period were absent. Indeed, two of the top three from last year were away as well. To make things even more difficult, after Alice Franks ran the fastest time in the ranking period at the Army 10-Miler in 1:18:56, she did not have any of the next six times and was bumped to third at the Parks Half Marathon by fourth place Deborah Gebhardt, who won that race in 1:49:57.
Again it was time to use the Moreland Racing Factor (MRF). Running the Marine Corps Marathon obviously took some juice from Franks, whose Rockville 10K the following week in 49:21 was slower than Gebhardt's Veteran's Day 10K win in 49:16. Dueling at the top, Betty Brothers ran 22:53 at the All Access 5K for the second fastest race. Marge Rosasco ran the shortest possible race, the St. Ursula's 3 Mile in 22:09 and added a few more 5Ks with essentially the same pace, such as the Renie Road Race in 22:57. Brothers added the Neptune Festival 8K in 38:17.
The MRF rewards runners for major races as well as wins, and Franks was in four. Top finishes in big races usually mean you beat a lot of your rivals. Franks had an MRF of 50. Rosasco, even with no major races, was runner-up with 30. Brothers earns the third spot with 17.

Run for Life 5K 23:47, 10K = 49:31
Last year's champion is back after taking the summer off. Joan Coven started off gamely with the Hare & Tortoise New Quarter Park 8K in 42:32, but defending champion Dee Nelson had gotten used to the rarefied air at the top. She laid down the law the following week with a smashing Run for Life 5K in 23:47. Coven got no closer than her 24:40 at the Crapolfest 5K, which would have been good enough by a second against Nelson's Rockville 5K from last year.
This year Nelson opted for the Rockville 10K instead of the shorter distance, winning easily in 50:46. Coven ended the period the McDonald's Half Marathon in Richmond in 2:04:25, for the second longest race in the division. That kept her ahead of fourth place Rosemary Schwartzbard, who had the longest race at the Marine Corps Marathon. Schwartzbard's best race was the downhill PR maker, Great Allegany 15K in 1:26:45.
Nelson ended the period at the Veteran's Day 10K with a swift 50:31. Third place Barbara Stark had a solid effort at the Race for the Cure 5K in 26:57. Fifth place Felicity Hawes had her second best race at the Army 10-Miler in 1:35:17, which would have given her third place last year.

MCM 10K 59:28
Tami Graf from Lusby, MD made good use of her travels while visiting family in the Tidewater, racing her fastest 5K of the period in 30:37 at the Oyster Pointer 5K.
Last period's champion, Ernestine Sheppard, was one of four in the division to test the waters at the marathon distance for her only race. Tami Graf, the consensus favorite for the last few years, did a lot of traveling this period. While visiting family in the Tidewater region she started the ranking period with the fastest 5K at the Oyster Pointer 5K in 30:37.
Then, Ecris Williams, famous for running the Rotary Resolution 10K (she has won all 12 years) and then disappearing, decided to get militant. She seized the division first with the fastest time for the 10 mile distance. Williams cranked out a 1:39:23 at the Army 10-Miler. Then, at the MCM 10K, she put it all away, racing home in 59:28. Graf had the six next best times and her best performance was at the Lower Potomac River 10 Mile where she ran 1:42:32.
Nancy Fraser had two solid 5Ks to earn the third place in the division.

HCA Virginia 8K 55:13, 10K = 1:10:06
After missing the summer, Yvonne Aasen returned with a vengeance with six wins that began with the Pasadena 5K in September. As the fall progressed, she continually improved, capping off the top six times in the division with the Down's Park 5 Mile in 57:47. That same morning, Marilyn Kelly ran the Falcon & Bruin 5K in 38:33 to take the runner-up spot.
