The LAWS Run for the Shelter announces Herndon-based Volkswagen Group of America as the title sponsor of the 15th annual race. Registration is now open for this year's race, which features electronic timing. The race returns to the Loudoun County Fairgrounds on April 18, 2010 where as many as a thousand runners are expected to toe the line.
"We are extremely excited to be back for a second year, supporting such a deserving group that is located right in our community," said David Geanacopoulos, executive vice president and general counsel for Volkswagen Group of America. LAWS, the Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter, provides temporary emergency shelter, food, and emotional support to women and their children who are escaping domestic violence and abuse.
More than 40 Volkswagen Group employees will also participate in the race as runners and volunteers. "Volkswagen's sponsorship is a testimony to the depth of the community's support for LAWS," said race director Randy Skovrinski, who noted that the race draws many sponsors each year who want to show their support for the agency. "We all want to stamp out domestic violence and make Loudoun County a safer place."
For the fourth year in a row, this year's race features a ¼ mile dash for children younger than 10 years old. The children's dash is a scenic loop around the fairgrounds finishing in the barn.
The LAWS Half Marathon is the longest foot race in Loudoun County. Runners in both the Half Marathon and 5K will cover scenic and rolling courses along the W&OD Trail that take the runners under the historic Clark's Gap arch. Sanctioned by the RRCA, the Half Marathon and 5K are also part of the Loudoun Championship Series, making it an excellent opportunity for runners to earn points for prestigious prizes.
In addition, all runners will receive a technical running shirt. Open winners in the half marathon are eligible for cash awards and age group winners will be eligible for gift certificates to Potomac River Running. All kids who participate in the kid's dash will receive a medal.
Online registration is open through Active.com. Fees are $45 for the Half-Marathon, $30 for the 5K, and $10 for the Kids Fun Run. Race entry fees after April 10th are $50 for the Half-Marathon and $35 for the 5K until race day. Please visit the race Web site or visit us on Face book for more information.
Proceeds from the "Run for the Shelter" benefit LAWS. Volunteers are also welcome.
