Number Four and Faster for Athena

Running in the Women's 40+ 4 x 400 Meters relay at the 103rd Millrose Games in Madison Square Gardens, New York, Athena Track Club, a nationwide team for master women runners, broke their existing record and gained a fourth consecutive win in the event. Both Athena Track Club and Millrose A. A. beat the 2009 record of 4:23.73, with Athena running 4:20.03 and Millrose A. A. 4:22.37.
Kathleen Shook (48) from Zionsville, Indiana got things started for Athena. Running in second place behind Millrose's Janice Reid, she finished strongly with a 65 second split to hand off almost simultaneously to Maryline Roux (43) from Davidson, North Carolina. Anxious to put her team in front, Roux stormed past Sonya Badger from Millrose A. A. and immediately created a gap between the runners. Badger hung on well, and closed in the final meters on a tiring Roux, who ran a 66 second split. With a good exchange to Lorraine Jasper (48) of Birchrunville, PA, Athena maintained and increased the lead over Millrose's Stephanie Rhue. Jasper, a regular track competitor in the D.C. Metro Area, ran a fine 65 second leg.This set 2009, World Outdoor W 40-44, 400 M Champion, Charmaine Roberts (42), and Beltsville, Maryland resident, up for a comfortable victory with a fine exhibition of 400 meter running on the undersized indoor track, in 62 seconds. Terry Ballou of Millrose ran strongly to bring her team home less than 3 seconds behind Athena.
