Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Women Division 2009
Open WomenPike's Peek 10K, 33:03
Tenth ranked in the Open Division, Veena Reddy just held off Kristin Till of Baltimore, MD, who exploded to a fourth overall Veterans Day 10K in 36:49 to take the third spot in 40-44 division.
Again, this year the division was huge with 62 qualifiers. And once again, there were many excellent races and the runner with the fastest time is our champion: Hirut Mandefro. She had 14 overall wins, earning titles in the first three periods. Second place Samia Akbar got started in the second half of the year. Akbar made it close, setting the Army 10-Miler record in 55:25 and winning it all at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K in 33:40. Ultimately, Mandefro had too much fire power and her second overall at Pike's Peek 10K in 33:03 was the top race. She sandwiched the Army 10-Miler time with a third overall at the most competitive 10K in the region, the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K, in 33:35.
After those four swift races, Mandefro capped off the next seven best races with six overall wins, including the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:14:48 and the Best of 2009 5K title in Crystal City Twilighter 5K with 16:22. Muluye Gurma had an excellent fall, finishing third at the Army 10-Miler in 57:20.
Christine Ramsey was only a small ways behind winning it all at the competitive Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 16:35 for the third fastest 5K of the year. Gurma ran 17:18 there for third overall in her fourth best race. Her Army 10-Miler time was enough to hold off soon-to-be masters Elena Orlova, though she was second in 16:40. Ramsey added a lot more, winning the Parks Half Marathon in 1:16:30 ahead of Orlova's 1:18:14. She also beat runner-up Akbar at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K with 27:17 to 27:32.
Phebe Ko matched Orlova's ten victories. Her best race was the SunTrust National Half Marathon in 1:17:09 for fourth overall. Seventh place Renee High won it all at the hard-to-judge Virginia is for Lovers 14K in 49:52. Ko nonchalantly dismantled Gurma by two minutes while winning the Van Metre 5 Mile. High's second race was another rare distance, the 30K, winning it all in 1:56:09.
Eighth place Maggie Infeld was the ringer who nearly upset Mandefro at the hilly Page's Run 5K, finally succumbing in the final 200 meters on the track in 17:05 to 17:07. Then, she trounced the field, winning it all to end the period at the King of the Road 5K in 16:50. Briana Whalley earns ninth at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile with 58:31. Veena Reddy showed her stuff at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 59:22.

SunTrust National Half Marathon 1:16:10, 10K = 34:25
Last year Courtney Waldhauser was seventh overall and had 11 age group wins. This year she earns the top spot with the five best times among the qualifiers. Three of the races were overall wins and her best race was as runner-up at the Bel Air Town 5K in 18:48. Her second best race was an overall win at the Maryland Half Marathon in 1:26:46, just ahead of 51-year-old Lee DiPietro who also made the elite division.
Holly Rich also made the elite division with the next three fastest times in the division. Rich came to town to race the SunTrust National Half Marathon in 1:30:49. Back in September, she won her division at the Charlottesville Women's 4 Miler in 25:38.
The Sinclair twins danced around 14-year-old Nicole Dawson for a chance at the third spot with 10-year-old Avery Cunningham right there in the mix. Dawson won it all at the Super Bowl 5K in 19:48. Ashlyn won at the Capital Crescent 5K also in 19:48, just ahead of sister Halsey's 19:54. Cunningham built a fan club with her overall win at the AS WDF 5K in 19:53. Ashlyn takes third with her overall win at the Cranberry Crawl 10K in 41:26. Dawson adds the Dancel Family Center Y 5K in 20:16 for fourth. Cunningham is second overall at the ZOOMA 10K in 42:13 with Halsey taking sixth, racing second overall at the Cranberry Crawl 5K in 20:29.

35-39 Women
Kentlands/Lakelands 5K 16:40, 10K = 34:42
Two weeks after winning her age group at the Veterans Day 10K in 39:19 Toni Marie Diegoli of Arlington, VA won it all at the Northern Central Trails Marathon 3:03:59.
Elena Orlova raced 25 times in the region and her lowest position was an eighth overall 34:56 at Pike's Peek 10K, thus netting her the Best of 2009 title for her division. She would have won all four periods except that her only race in the winter was a course record at the Walnut Hill Ribbon Run 5K. Last year Erica Nemmers had the fastest 5K in the division with 18:11. This year she blasted a terrific 17:16 at the Clarendon Day 5K, though it was the only time in the top 20 that did not belong to Orlova. Already a star, Orlova redefined the 5K at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K from her 18:12 in 2008 to a division busting 16:40 this year. Her best race in 2008 was a 1:20:01 at the Baltimore Half Marathon. In 2009, she had three halves faster, including the 1:16:59 at Richmond for second overall.
After that it was somewhat confusing. Maureen Ackerly was a woman without a division. She held onto the winter with the best 15K of the year at Frostbite with 57:44, her second of two overall wins. Then she crossed over into the masters in the spring where she raced the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 60:18. That time would have topped the masters division for the year. She only ran in two periods and is allowed to apply her older age races to her credit for the sub-masters. She earns third.
Christi Markowicz ran two sharp 5Ks in September to take the fourth spot. Her best was the PVI Runfest in 17:49. Fifth place Hilary Cairns was coming on like gangbusters. Her first seven races were all major races with solid times. Her last five races of the year were all overall victories, culminating with her best race of 37:20 at the Boo! Run for Life 10K.

40-44 Women
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile 60:18, 10K = 36:14
This division was really crazy this year with four different division winners: Susan Gray, Maureen Ackerly, Alisa Harvey, and Elena Kaledina.
Susan Gray won the winter rankings before melting away. She did return in the fall for one excellent race, an overall win at the Freedom's Run Marathon Festival Half Marathon in 1:24:00. Maureen Ackerly flew in only for the spring, winning the most important 10 miler, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom, ahead of the top two qualifiers. She did lose to Danielle Russell at the St. Patrick's 8K 29:26 to 29:34.
The reigning champion, Alisa Harvey, won the summer. Danielle Russell was runner-up the first three times and then aged up and away for the fall. With the help of 10 age group wins, she edges by runner-up Naoko Ishibe, who had run a marvelous Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:20:42 for the top masters. She added a swift 17:40 at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K to finish third overall and the fastest 5K of the year. When the smoke cleared, Russell wins with a Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) of 136 to 90. She was 2-0 against Ishibe, winning at the Tim Harmon Memorial 5K. More importantly, Russell had her best time finishing Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 61:01 versus Ishibe's 61:28.
So, what happened to Alisa Harvey? She came away with ten age group wins. She handled the Lawyers Have Heart 10K easily in June with 37:44. She had four overall wins. In mid-June Kristin Till was racing the ferociously hilly Dreaded Druid Hills 10K in 43:51. At the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler, Harvey prevailed over Russell 23:56 to 24:12. Then, at the Army 10-Miler, it started to come unglued for the 44-year-old Harvey. The multi-time former winner and masters record holder ran a very credible 62:33 for her fastest race of the year. That left her as third finisher in the 40-44 division and behind now 45-year-old Russell's 61:57.
A month later she returned to the comfortable confines of West Potomac Park for a little redemption. She had set the masters event record in 2007 at 36:33. She finished in seventh overall with a solid 37:36 ahead of eighth place Russell's age group record 37:54. She earned fourth in the division as Till exploded for an incredible 36:49 and fourth overall at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K.
Prolific Denise Knickman had 17 age group wins plus six overall wins during the year to earn fifth place. Her best race was as masters champion at Pike's Peek 10K in 38:00.

45-49 Women
Army 10 Miler 61:57, 10K = 37:14
Danielle Russell of Ashburn, VA won the masters division at Credit Union Cherry Blossom. In the fall she turned 45 and put her stamp on that division setting the course record at Veterans Day in 37:54. Already for the winter she set the Jingle All the Way record in 37:49.
Danielle Russell put in her opening bid for division ownership with the top four times in the division--all in the fall. For 2009, the battle was a tight one between Cindy Conant and Linda Foley. Conant was second at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:05:42 for the top time in the division. Foley was second at the Army 10-Miler in a nearby 1:05:49.
Not to slight third place, Pamela Lovett had her best two races as overall wins spanning the year. Her best race to end October was a 5K in 19:12.
Still, the battle was between Foley and Conant. Conant had a two-to-one edge in age group wins with 14. She also had the fastest 10K, running Pike's Peek 10K in 40:08. She finished second overall in the first two periods while Foley abstained and then triumphed over her in the summer. She had an excellent B&A HM in the spring with 1:28:35.
The division looked like Conant's to win. It all came down to the final month. The two racers met at the inaugural Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) Race to End Women's Cancer Half Marathon. Through the first two loops the two runners were glued together. In the final loops, Foley pulled away to prevail in 1:28:14 for the third fastest qualifier, taking the crown. Conant finished in 1:30:04.
Laura Shannon took the fourth spot, racing the Maymount Half Marathon in 1:29:31. A third place spot at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:07:49 gave Vanessa Cox the fifth spot. Always smiling, Win Persina took a close decision for sixth with her No Rail on the Trail 10K in 40:59. She added 23 age group wins to beef up her credentials.
In all, 44 runners made the rankings.

Under Armour Baltimore Marathon, 3:02:17, 10K = 38:58
The Battle of the Titans never came head to head. In the fall of 2008, Leisa Villani and Lee DePietro both had an identical pace for the top race of that period. Villani won while DiPietro did not have a second qualifier. In 2009, Villani moved swiftly through the division for the first six months, winning the winter and spring. Her best effort was the Virginia is for Lovers 14K in 56:06. She won the spring with a dominating Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:27:57. Then, she sat down for the year and let DiPietro take the stage.
The barrage started with DiPietro finishing second overall at the Maryland Half Marathon in 1:27:34. Then she won the summer with her Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 18:46 followed by winning the fall at the Under Armour Baltimore Marathon in 3:02:17. That was a second faster than her tie with Villani for the best in the fall of 2008.
Third place Debi Bernardes overcame Debbie Flynn's excellent Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:09:38 with a couple of great races in the summer. Her best was the SPCA Run for Shelter 5K in 19:59. Sixth place Pat Wilkerson's bid was the Annapolis 10 Mile in 1:11:12. She was turned away with a barrage of 5Ks from fifth place Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico, whose best was the Queen's Lake in 20:29.

55-59 Women
Shamrock Festival 8K 34:08, 10K = 43:20
Betty Blank got off to a slow start. She did win 16 of her 17 races. She just did win the winter with two fast course 5Ks (best 21:33) versus Lynn Swanson's three cross country course wins (best 21:55). She did have the top 13 times among qualifiers. She laid an egg, by her elite standards, finishing Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile five and one-half minutes and Pike's Peek three and one-half minutes slower than last year. She still handily won the division. Later in the year, however, her top three races were more like Betty. She won Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 43:50 for the fastest 10K of the year. Then, in the fall, she ran the Army 10-Miler in 1:12:28 and Clarendon 5K in 21:10, both the fastest races of the year.
Roseanna Norton had five big 5K races including an early boost at the Gold's Gym 5K in 22:00 to take the runner-up spot. She traded places with third place Maria Shields, staying ahead in the winter while Shields prevailed in the fall with her win at the Down's Park 5 Mile in 36:58. Linell Smith snuck by five other women faster than a 49 minute 10K equivalence with her 23:13 Jingle Bell 5K.

60-64 Women
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:17:22, 10K = 46:30
Fifth in the 60-64 division, Deborah Gebhardt of Adelphi, MD had a solid Veterans Day 10K in 49:16.
Winning three of the four rankings periods, plus 24 age groups awards, and having the fastest race of the period pretty much guaranteed the crown for Alice Franks. She eased up during the summer, falling to third behind Rose Malloy and Callie Edmundson. Still, none of the races these ladies ran in their only ranking period would have cracked the top ten for the year. Franks owned the top four and six of those ten times with races such as the Jingle All the Way 10K in 47:17 and the Army 10-Miler in 1:18:56.
Betty Brothers and Marge Rosasco ran all their best races in the fall. Rosasco won by the narrowest of margins. During the year, Brothers won the winter and prevailed over Rosasco's single race. In the spring, they reversed the decision the same way. In the summer Rosasco prevailed, dueling best at the 5K distance in 23:31 to 23:49, earning the runner-up spot.
Former champion Chris Craun had the 12th best time at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:20:06. That places her in good company with Malloy's best race at Chestertown in an identical time. Craun added a YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase Turkey Chase 10K win in 48:24 to cement the fourth spot. Fifth place Deborah Gebhardt is one of these six runners listed that is fully capable of winning the division. She ran in a half dozen of the major races. Her best race was the No Rail on the Trail 10K in 48:24 behind Franks.

Pike's Peek 10K 49:47
Dee Nelson is mainly a middle distance runner--1 mile through 5K. She has raced 60 plus races a year for decades. She dominated all four periods with 34 age group wins including the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 1:22:57 and Pike's Peek 10K in 49:47. Of her eight Best of 2009 titles, the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, with a 49:51 10K equivalence, has to be the best. That February course is hilly and cold.
Only one other runner had any times in the top 35. Joan Coven spread her 11 age group wins throughout the year, starting with her best on the first day of the racing year. At the Governor's Land 5K, she ran 24:07 for the fifth fastest time of the year. Almost a year later in October, she ran her next best time at the Crapolfest 5K in 24:40.
Janice Hicks ran three half marathons including her best race at Rock ‘n' Roll Half Marathon where she won ahead of Ellen Hocheder. Yet Hicks had her best race at the Railroad Days 5K in 27:30, good enough for fifth in the division. Hocheder, who also ran a couple halves, takes the third spot with her springtime Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 26:52. In Montgomery County, fourth place Felicity Hawes had solid wins at the Rockville 10K in 56:55 and the Germantown 5 Miler in 45:12.

Celtic Solstice 5 Mile 42:09, 10K = 53:09
Jamie Wollard of Rockville, MD is eighth in the 70-74 division, racing Jingle All the Way to an age group win.
Going back to October 2006, Tami Graf still has not been bested in her age group when she set the Virginia state record for the 5K. She also owns the 10 mile and half marathon records. Still, Ernestine Shepherd bolted past her in the summer to oust her for the first time in the rankings. She did that with four excellent 5Ks, including 28:38 at the African American Festival 5K. Then, in the fall, Ecris Williams took the division with a swift 10K. Unfortunately, Williams had to miss her chance at a 13th consecutive win at the Rotary Resolution 10K, which was canceled for 2010.
With 35 age group wins, Graf still had three times as many wins as any competitor, including fourth place Pauline Ely. Ely's best effort of 12 age group wins was the Queen's Lake 5K in 32:31. Third place Nancy Fraser matched Graf's eighth best time at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 1:43:57 with her win at Charlottesville two months later in 1:43:56.
Shepherd's second best race, at Pikesville 5K in 29:02, beat Graf's Valentine 5K win in 29:03. In April, Graf earned the crown, setting the course record at the swift Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 2:09:22.
