Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer Race Report

The Reston Town Center is a great spot for a road race. There is a ton of free parking and the start of the race in the middle of the shopping center is totally devoid of cars. Racing down the canyons made by the tall buildings gave it a big city feel. Cruising back and forth, over and around, and up down the many side streets kept you entertained as you circled around. The course was brilliantly marshaled.
Last year's women's division winner, Meghan Ridgley (18:08), had to be considered the favorite as she had won handily against Jennifer Ledford (18:37). Indeed, except for a couple of superstars, Abiyot Abebe and Aaron Church, last year, racing in the mid 15s, she might have been better than fourth overall of all the finishers. This year when she lined up, she had to think the women's title was a done deal. Runners know the competition. It is safe to say, she must have been thinking, ‘Maybe I can win it all.' Women often start out more conservative at the gun but if you want to have it all, you have to be bold.
Turning the first corner she had to feel good. Only Tim Stahler (in photo) seemed to be with her after the first adrenaline rush of racing down the opening half mile. By 1500M she was starting to pull away with a thirty meter lead. She was clearly straining but the prize was a big one. The middle third of the course has the most challenges but by 3000 meters on the out and back, she could see that the race was all hers. That had to make riding the hill at 2.25 miles easier because once she cleared that it would be all over. Finishing just faster than six-minutes per mile pace, she joined a select group of women who have been the overall winner of a race. Stahler hung on to win for the men in 19:42.
This race, like the Race for Hope 5K last week and the National Race for the Cure 5K to start June, is more a victory celebration for survivors and memorial for loved ones who have succumbed. Even more it is a reminder that while life is great, it can be cut short with little or no warning. Ovarian cancer can sneak up and quickly snuff out a life. At least 26 women who have survived ran in the event. Everyone knows someone who has been challenged by it.
There was joyful music to energize the participants and plenty of food and drink after the event. Just before the awards, there was a mini rolling thunder as a small group of motorcyclists blasted past the stage. It was another reminder to Break the Silence. Age group awards went two deep in five years increments.
Before the start of the race the clouds were ominous, the winds gusty. For one brief minute Mother Nature taunted us and dumped a bucket of the wet stuff on the field. But as the race started the clouds blew away and the bright sunshine flooded the sky. We could see clearly now and it would be a bright, bright sunshiny day.
