Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Capitol Hill Classic Delivers Again in its 31st Year

For the Washington Running Report

Below, Kate Neeper breaks the tape in the 10K

After all the crazy weather with 90 degrees, then hail, then tornados, this spring was looking crazy. Then this weekend we were treated to the gorgeous weather we all had been waiting for. Sure the skies were overcast early and we had one last juke with a couple of drops on the drive down but by 8:30 a.m. when the 31st rendition of the Capitol Hill Classic 10K got underway, the weather was near ideal.

The course starts with a mostly downhill parade to the old football stadium and one could almost forget that the final mile includes a knee-buckling trek back up Capitol Hill.

Event record holder Gurmessa Megressa (30:38 in 2006) was back and ready for action with a big smile on his face. Last year he battled the whole way with eventual winner Abiyot Endale (30:50). He lost ground in the final mile when he collided with a runner coming from the other direction and settled for second in 30:56.

Last year on this same weekend he had bested two time champion and course record holder Steven Crane at the Germantown 5 Miler. This year he raced side by side with Mohammed Awol. At the finish, they both broke Michael Wardian's 30-34 age group record (25:14) with Megressa holding a one second edge in 25:04.

So now at Capitol Hill, as runners were streaming down ‘the Hill' at their mile four, these two were again running side by side. They seemed almost playful and almost missed that last turn just before mile six. At the finish Awol somehow out leaned Megressa by three hundredths of a second to win in 31:32. Thomas Rhodes came roaring in a couple minutes later to take the last money spot in 33:45.

Surprisingly, only one masters runner finished in the top thirty. Not surprisingly, it was Malcolm Lester, 40, of Washington, DC (right) in 37:56 in 24th place.

For the women, the older runners did not have a great day against the young talent either. Place number 28, Caryn Ernst, 41, of Washington, DC was the only masters woman in the top fifty.

The battle for the top spot was between Kate Neeper and Gretchen Chick, both from the city. They were the only two women faster than a 6:00 pace. Neeper took the top honor in 36:55 with Chick close behind in 37:07. Kate Dart of Arlington, VA is pretty new to the area. Still, it is doubtful she knew anything about her pursuer Anna Novick from Massachusetts. Dart did hold on to win third place and cash with a solid 38:53.

Christopher Ryan, 51, of Washington, DC (left) was the top grandmaster in 39:28, while Lou Shapiro was the top finisher older than sixty. Shapiro noted that he had run the course many times before. Experience must help a lot as the 68-year-old finished 149th overall in 44:44.

Linda Rotunno, 50, of Washington, DC claimed top grandmaster with 48:44. Janice Jacobs, 63, of Arlington, VA was top senior in 55:18.

The sun got bright after the race and the bottled water went pretty quickly. Still, there were a lot more bagels and bananas than last year. You do burn a few calories racing around the city.

Who can figure out all these new bike lanes with instructions just for them by the different traffic lights?

At 10:30, it was time for the second event. I call it minesweeping. The distance was called a 3K and the majority of the racers were not tall enough to go on all the rides at amusement parks. At first the two wheelchairs racers, who had both raced in the 10K, were going to start separately, then we all went together. This made for a tango dance step or two as the announcer blurted out the G-O word.

The little ones fired off in a sprint and began a mile long trail of flameouts. These young actors sure made it seem as if they were dying as they twirled around, sometimes just sitting down on the pavement. Ah well, time to gear up and go after those top spots. Amazingly, they gave equal cash for the top three in both the 10K and the 3K. It was sure fortunate that the 10K winners did not know that or they would surely have double dipped.

The course was supposed to go down Massachusetts Avenue, turn back up on East Capitol Street and turn LEFT on 3rd Street. That extra block returning up 2nd Street is almost a full 3K. Instead the course went RIGHT and the final total was closer to 1.4 miles.

The top three men finished right around 8:00. The second place finisher had a slightly faster net time but as we all know, overall wins go to the person who actually breaks the tape. For the men, that was Matthias Darricarrere (#2665).

Before the race, Beth McCann was proudly telling the world that she had entered a new age division--50-54. She has been training and ready to take on the world. She moved out strongly and was delighted to finish strongly in second overall. She was a little disappointed that the distance was short but $75.00 in prize money helped cheer her up.
