Bernard Lagat Sets New American Record for Men's 5000m in Oslo

2010 World Indoor 3000m champion Bernard Lagat, 35, of Tucson, AZ improved the men's 5000m American record on Friday night, June 4 at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway. Photo at left by www.photorun.net: Bernard Lagat in 2010 World Indoor Champoionships 3000m.A two-time Olympic and three-time World Outdoor medalist, Bernard Lagat ran a strategic race and finished third in 12:54.12. Lagat broke the previous American record of 12:56.27 set by Dathan Ritzenhein last August in Zurich, Switzerland; Lagat's previous best time for 5000m was 12:59.22 (London, 2006). Chris Solinsky, the American record holder over 10,000m, finished sixth in a personal best 12:56.66, just outside the previous record. Imane Merga of Ethiopia won the 5000m race in 12:53.81, and 2008 World Indoor 3000m champion Tariku Bekele of Ethiopia was second in 12:53.97.
In other events, Chaunte Lowe, the new American record holder in the women's high jump, finished as the runner-up to reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Blanka Vlasic. With almost identical series, Lowe was determined the runner-up with one miss at 2.01m/6-7 while Vlasic cleared that height on her first attempt. Both women had three misses at 2.03m/6-8.
Two-time World Outdoor champion Kerron Clement won the men's 400m hurdles ahead of fellow American Bershawn Jackson. The two men were even coming off the final turn; Clement was able to pull away from Jackson over the final 100m to win in 48.12 to Jackson's 48.25.
Two-time World Indoor champion Lolo Jones raced to a season's best 12.66 and won the women's 100m hurdles, after starting the outdoor season in Deagu, South Korea (runner-up) and Ostrava, Czech Republic (fourth place). Danielle Carruthers finished fourth in 12.74.
In the women's 200m, LaShaunte'a Moore, fresh off a sub-11.00 second 100m race last week, won the 200m in a personal best 22.38, while two-time World Outdoor 100m bronze medalist Carmelita Jeter was the runner-up in 22.54.
Reigning World Indoor and Outdoor champion Christian Cantwell won the men's shot put with a heave of 21.31m/69-11. 2007 World Outdoor champion Reese Hoffa finished fourth with 20.69m/67-10.75, and two-time Olympic silver medalist Adam Nelson was seventh with 19.91m/65-4.
2010 World Indoor champion Debbie Dunn took third in the women's 400m, running a season's best 50.75, while 2009 World Outdoor 400m hurdles silver medalist Lashinda Demus set a personal best of 51.09 (fifth).
