(Photo at right by www.photorun.net: Ed Moran, at left, was USA 10,000m track runner-up)As in past years, the Peachtree 10K featured a strong international field that included defending champion Sammy Kitwara of Kenya and Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia. During the early miles a chase pack consisting of Moran, Patrick Smyth (Minneapolis, MN), Ian Burrell (Flagstaff, AZ), Brent Vaughn (Blackhawk, CO) and James Carney (Boulder, CO), followed about three seconds behind the main pack that included Kitwara, Gebremariam as well as American Mo Trafeh (Duarte, CA).
Approaching three miles, Ian Burrell burst from the chase pack to join the leaders, pulling Moran along with him. By five miles, Moran and Trafeh had separated themselves from the rest of the Americans but had fallen about 10 seconds behind the leaders.
Gebre Gebremariam pulled clear from a group of eight men on the final stretch to win the overall race in 27:56 while Ed Moran opened a ten second gap on Trafeh to take the U.S. title, finishing tenth overall in 28:19. Trafeh placed second (28:29), and Brent Vaughn overtook Burrell to finish third in 28:46 to 28:51. James Carney rounded out the top-five in 28:57.
