Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Spring Women 2010

Open Women

Arch's Charlottesville 8K 25:34, 10K = 32:27

Hirut Mandefro of Silver Spring, MD had one of the best races ever in the region with her dominating 25:34 win ar Arch’s Charlottesville 8K to earn the Open crown.

Samia Akbar came out and had an even better spring than last year. She dropped her time at the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K to 33:19 and moved up to the runner-up spot. Then, at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile she laid down the hammer with the elite women, finishing in 54:46 for seventh overall.

Hirut Mandefro, on the other hand, was not pleased with her Credit Union Cherry Blossom10 Mile race, finishing in ninth place with a tepid 58:10. That time was just enough to hold off Phebe Ko, who earned fourth in the rankings with her 58:39. Hirut was going to have to do something quick and quick it was. Six days later at the Arch's Charlottesville 8K she lambasted the women's field, finishing ahead of all but three of the men in a crown-earning 25:34 victory.

At the end of the month Akbar had a marvelous George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile victory in 56:02. Hirut headed to Rockville for a third overall 33:22 at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K. Malika Mejdoub earns third place for her 33:33 at that race.

Top sub master Susannah Kvasnicka still craves overall wins and both her races were close. At the Shamrock Half Marathon she was fourth overall in 1:19:32. Back in town she did the Pike finishing sixth among the women in 35:57. Michelle Miller uncorked easily her best effort for 16th overall at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 60:13.

Now it was time for the top masters division runner, Elena Orlova. She finished seventh on the Pike in 36:34 to take the seventh spot in the rankings. Believe me, she was not happy with that time, having run 34:56 last year.

From there it gets tough. Kate Neeper gets eighth with a fourth overall half marathon in 1:21:06 and two overall victories, including the Capitol Hill Classic in 36:55. Gretchen Chick is ninth right behind Orlova's 10K in 36:40 and second at Capitol Hill in 37:07. Next comes Meghan Ridgley. Forget that she won the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon in a solid 2:52:01. She also was the first runner overall at the 5K Run for Ovarian Cancer.

Melissa Rittenhouse had two big half marathons, including an overall win at LAWS Run for the Shelter. Erin Swain and Julie Culley split wins against each other at Credit Union Cherry Blossom and George Washington Parkway Classic. Swain's win downtown was the fastest race.

In all, 67 runners qualified for this division.

19 & Under Women

Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K 38:31

Kerry Kelley never left town to win her division. She started smartly with a 1:08:18 at the Charlottesville 10 Miler and followed that two weeks later with an overall win at the Charlottesville Half Marathon in 1:28:54.

Avery Cunningham of Annapolis, MD is just 11 years old. She dropped more than a minute off last year's Cherry Pit 10 Mile time to finish second overall in 1:11:04. A week later she returned to Columbia and dropped an eye-popping two minutes off her Clyde's 10K time to finish in 41:19. That earned her third place in a close battle with Teresa Williamson of Chesapeake, VA. Williamson matched her 10K with a second place finish at the Lion's Journey for Sight 5K in 19:51. In March, she had been runner-up at the Cox Falcon 5K in 20:19 and in May she broke the tie with her overall win at the Run for Independence 5K in 20:30.

Nicole Dawson inched past Kelly Kingma's 20:11 Run for the D.O.G. 5K with her Dancel Family Center Y 5K in 20:08. Brittney Rooks had four races 15K or longer with two overall wins, including the BRRC White Hall 15K in 1:04:52 to pass Anna Ryba's MCRRC Country Road Run 5 Mile in 33:55 for sixth place.

35-39 Women

Shamrock Half Marathon 1:19:32, 10K = 35:56

Laura Zeilinger of Washington, DC was seventh overall at the St. Patrick's Day 8K to make it to third submaster.

Susannah Kvasnicka was healthy again and it would take only her first race to decide the title. She powered to a fourth overall at the Shamrock Half Marathon in 1:19:32.

Laura Zeilinger had her worst race in the first week of the rankings at the St. Patrick's Day 8K, taking seventh overall in 31:24. She came back with a second place in her age group at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:03:32, but that only moved her up to third place in the rankings since Brenda Schrank acquired elite status as 25th overall at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:02:39 and won the age group. Schrank also was fifth overall at the Charlottesville 10 Miler (1:04:44) and won her hometown Apple Blossom 10K (39:17).

It looked like it would be a Cherry Blossom parade until Kara Waters took an overall win at Clyde's 10K the following week in 38:25. Back downtown, Michelle Cunningham edged Mary Davison by a lunge, 1:04:36 to 1:04:41, to take the fifth spot. Mary Davison ventured north to Rockville to win her division at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in a swifter 38:57.

Five runners made the Open division.

40-44 Women

Pacers Running Festival Quarter Marathon 39:39, 10K = 36:26

Don't say you weren't warned. Elena Orlova mastered her new division in her début with remarkable ease and ran the top four times among qualifiers to take top honors.

Samantha Cole stepped up big at the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield National Half Marathon in 1:27:32. In April she powered further ahead of Suzanne Himes (1:07:05) and Denise Knickman (1:07:27) at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:05:38.

The following week Orlova finished second among the women at the LAWS Run for the Shelter Half Marathon in 1:23:59. The big racing weekend of the 25th, Himes almost had enough juice to overcome her lost to Cole with a 1:05:37 at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile for top master.

Orlova was already in the books with a seventh overall at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 36:34. Starting May, Cole managed a 40:13 masters win at the Apple Blossom 10K. Orlova's fourth overall in 36:46 was a reply: Didn't I say no, no, no.

In May, Rebecca Nathan ran the Pacers Running Festival Quarter Marathon in 43:30 to squeeze into the fourth spot. Knickman needed her time at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K (40:16) to hold off former Maryland 8K state record holder Rosalind Shepherd, who ran the Charlottesville 10 Miler in 1:07:21. Elizabeth Cottone followed Shepherd home there in 1:08:10.

Six runners made the Open division.

45-49 Women

Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon 1:19:10, 10K= 35:46

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile is one of the four top champion maker races every season. For this division, it easily decided the top four.

Linda Foley's second place finish in 1:04:47 would have moved her past Danielle Russell's fourth overall 30:43 at the St. Patrick's Day 8K. However, Russell got to the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile finish line in 1:03:27 to take the crown. Cindy Conant's fourth place finish at the 10 miler in 1:05:51 closed in on Foley's March race at the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield National Half Marathon in 1:26:51. Robyn Humphrey was fourth for her Cherry Blossom finish in 1:07:50.

Ruth Olson waited until the last day of the ranking period to unseat Martha Merz from the fifth spot. Merz had run a solid 32:37 at the St. Patrick's Day 8K to start but then Olson won at the Carytown 10K in 41:13. The next two spots were between two runners with identical best races and three overall wins in their four races. Pamela Lovett takes seventh with a 19:59 5K and a 21:03 5K overall win. Maria Carreras edges her with a Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K in 41:36 backed by another fast 10K and a 20:21 overall win in the 5K.

Three made the Open division.

50-54 Women

Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon 1:29:48, 10K 40:45

Eleanor Kerr of University Park, MD was the top grandmaster at the St. Patrick's Day 8K.

Eleanor Kerr opened the bidding with a fine St. Patrick's Day 8K in 33:33 while Dee Dee Loughran was going long at the SunTrust National Marathon in 3:23:12. Hosni Haghighian trotted out a fine Charlottesville 10 Miler in 1:11:27 to start April. It was enough to keep her in third place even though she ended the month at the Charlottesville Marathon in 3:36:14, while Robin Goodwin battled Kerr at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile.

Kerr won the award's battle with net time but lost the best time--1:12:23 to 1:12:42--and her earlier 8K still held sway for the top spot. The next week Goodwin ran a special HopeWell Cancer Support Reach Out and Run 5K in 20:50. In March she lost to Pat Wilkerson at the Dancel Family Center 5K, 20:53 to 21:35. With the best times so close, Wilkerson gets the lean for fourth place.

Then came the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K and with a month's rest Loughran moved away from the field with an excellent 40:47. A month later and more rested, she put another nail in the coffin for the competition, winning the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:29:48.

Former division champion Ofelia Perotti is on the comeback trail as the overall winner at the Captain's Cup Shamrock 5K in 21:18 for sixth place.

55-59 Women

TowneBank 8K, 33:58, 10K = 43:07

Dee Dee Loughran of Oak Hill, VA won the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 40:47. On the tougher Cascades 10K the first week of the summer season, she ran the second fastest 50-54 10K ever in Virginia with 41:23.

It is easy to pencil in Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA as the champion since she always runs a lot of races and usually wins her division. Blank opened the season winning the St. Patrick's Day 8K by a half mile in 36:29, but similar to last spring she was getting a slower start.

Lynn Swanson answered back the next week with a brilliant TowneBank 8K in 33:58 and this year she ran a second race. The day before Blank finished second at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:14:15, Swanson was getting fitted for her crown with a top masters victory at the East Beach Chesapeake Bay 10K in 43:43.

Blank needed her Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile race added to the equation since her Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K victory in 45:30 was being seriously challenged by Naomi Stanford. On the cusp of turning 60, Stanford was hogging all the glory in Crystal City, winning three of the four races out of the five-race series held there this year. Her 21:49 on the final day of the month was the fastest 5K among qualifiers.

Maria Shields of Davidsonville, MD ran the Cherry Pit 10 Mile Run and won her division in 1:18:13 to take fourth in the division. In the northeast corner of the state, RASAC rivals Margaret Starnes and Donna Lewis battled for the fifth spot at the Women's 5K by The Bay. Starnes nipped Lewis by a second in 22:59.

60-64 Women

Women's 5K by the Bay 23:05, 10K = 48:04

Former champion Chris Craun ran a spirited Credit Union Cherry Blossom for what could be her last race in this division. She was second in 1:19:45. Another race and she would have passed Alice Franks (third in net time) and Linda Kearny (fourth in net time.) Franks loaded up in the spring with six age group wins, including a St. Patrick's Day 8K victory over Kearney by two minutes in 38:46.

As Frank's times were slowing, Marge Rosasco was getting faster. In late March, she ran a nifty BRRC White Hall 15K in 1:15:07 to pass both of their 10 mile times. Rosasco upped the ante with a fine Victims Fund Run 5K in 23:33. That spelled trouble as no one else was getting under 24 minutes in the 5K. For Franks there was the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K to possibly rescue the division. She raced a no-competition marvel, winning by a mile in a very credible 48:42. That might have been just enough to take the division. Up in Havre de Grace, MD, Rosasco blew away the division at the Women's 5K by The Bay in 23:05, establishing a new queen.

Esther Buchser took fifth at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:23:58 to move up to fourth place. Linda Tice waited until May to get started and came through with a couple of solid 5Ks to earn fifth. Always prolific Ann Horn of Portsmouth, VA represented the Tidewater Region well with nine age group wins, her best effort was a mere second behind Tice's second race.

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 49:35

Dee Nelson of Gaithersburg, MD improved on her impressive nine victories from last spring with an even faster Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 49:35. She added the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:22:43, as well as nearly matching her own event record at the Charlottesville 10 Miler.

For the runner-up spot the times were very close for Elizabeth Glover and BJ King. Glover ran two half marathons, including an excellent CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield National Half Marathon in 1:54:55, but King overtakes her with four races to two and a Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) superiority rating of 45 to 24. She also had a fine Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:26:37.

Joan Coven of Williamsburg, VA raced twice in March to control the fourth position. She was tops at the TowneBank 8K in 41:27. A week later she ran the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K in 55:48. Barbara Stark of Suffolk, VA rejoins the fray with two nice April races, including tops at the Wounded Warrior Runs10K in 54:27. Diane DeEcheandia of Hampton, VA had two solid 5Ks to take the sixth place.

70-74 Women

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile 1:37:38, 10K = 58:40

Tami Graf of Lusby, MD started slowly in her bid to regain her crown. Nancy Fraser of Charlottesville, VA hoisted a solid Martha Jefferson 8K in 53:14 to start the bidding. Fraser raced the second fastest 10 miler in Charlottesville at 1:47:20.

Ecris Williams again had the distinction of the fastest 10 Mile at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile for her only race.

Then Graf responded with a big time 5K at Earth Day in 30:49 to surpass the 10 miler. The final day of the ranking period she added a win at the BRRC Women's Distance Festival 5K to outdo Fraser's 8K as well.

Janet Hughes was third, racing the Rotary 5K in hometown Winchester. She was followed by Pauline Ely who ran in the competitive Run for the D.O.G. 5K in Williamsburg, VA.

Justin Foundation 5K 32:57, 10K = 1:08:36

Harriet Locke of Bristol, VA owns the southwest corner of the region. This year she added a second qualifier and was free to fly to the top of the division. Yvonne Aasen from Severna Park, MD rules the north and east, but two of her five races took her to Westminster and she earned her runner-up spot at the Benedictine/Saint Gertrude 5K Challenge in Richmond where she posted a time of 36:46.

From the same area, Jeanette Chambers of Arnold, MD ventured to Silver Spring to win the St. John the Jogger 5K in 37:15. That moved her up seven races from her downtown Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile race.

Jacqueline O'Neil, from the center of the region, ran three of the major races but had to settle for fourth place in the division.
