Hundreds of local area residents are expected to join forces against childhood brain tumors at a charity fundraiser 5K planned for Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) Superheroes 5K Walk/Run/Kids' Run will take place at Meadowbrook Park/Candy City on a paved course that adjoins Rock Creek Park. Net proceeds from the family- event will benefit childhood brain tumor research. Online registration for the event is now open and complete details may be found by clicking on the link:  http://tinyurl.com/superherowalkrun.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners. Recognition will also be given to the top three male and female finalists in each age category. The Kids' Run is one-half mile    in length, and all finishers will receive a medal.

Founded in 1994, CBTF is a nonprofit 501(c) (3), all-volunteer organization founded by families, friends and physicians of children with brain tumors. Its mission is to raise funds for scientific research and heighten public awareness of pediatric brain tumors and to improve prognosis and quality of life for those affected.

CBTF strives to fund vital research initiatives to help find cures for pediatric brain tumors and improve quality of life.  The event is called the Superheroes 5K because battling a brain tumor requires superhuman courage and energy on the part of the child and the family and because everyone in our community who helps fight childhood brain tumors is a superhero."

According to Dr. Roger J. Packer, Senior Vice President of The Center for Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine and Director of the Brain Tumor Institute at Children's National Medical Center, childhood brain tumor research is undergoing an exciting transition, but increased funding is needed to translate research findings into effective treatments: "We are witnessing a dramatic change in the way childhood brain tumors are diagnosed and treated. The introduction of personalized biologically-based therapies will make treatments safer and more effective. However, research is desperately needed to bring these new understandings of the neuro-developmental and neuro-biologic underpinnings of childhood brain tumors, quickly and safely, from the laboratory bench to the child's bedside."

CBTF has awarded more than $1.5 million to basic science and clinical brain tumor research. Grants are made through a competitive peer review process with an outstanding group of pediatric brain tumor experts. In addition to funding research, CBTF helps support pediatric brain tumor conferences, holds educational retreat events for families, and offers informational materials to families and medical institutions.
