The Army Ten-Miler (ATM) is teaming up with the DC Road Runners Club (DCRRC) to collect running shoes at this year's Army Ten-Miler race. New or slightly worn running shoes can be dropped off at DC Road Runners Club expo booth #723 during the ATM Race Expo on Friday, Oct 22 and Saturday, Oct 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based charity, will then collect and distribute the shoes to disadvantaged people worldwide. Since 2005, Soles4Souls (www.soles4souls.org) has collected shoes from organizations, warehouses, and closets. It then distributes the shoes, free of charge, to people in need all over the world. More than 10 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes have been distributed by Soles4Souls in 125 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, Nepal, and the United States.
"Most runners, including myself, have one or two extra pairs of slightly worn running shoes in good condition that are sitting around the house. This is a great opportunity give these shoes a new purpose and help a needy person somewhere in the world," commented Jim Vandak, ATM race director.
"As the exclusive Army Ten-Miler training partner, DC Road Runners Club is proud to be supporting this great program. We encourage ATM participants and others in the community to stop by the DCRRC expo booth to learn more about DCRRC and to donate those slightly worn running shoes that you no longer need," says Emily Grossman, DC Road Runners Club/Army Ten-Miler training director.
