The Run for the Door has had some really fast runners in its first two years. After looking around the field young JJ Lapointe, 15, did not see anybody so special. So when after the long pause and the bellowed G-O word he bolted from the gate for a quick lead. A more sanguine runner, Jean Christophe Arcaz (left), who will turn fifty in January, decided to let him go. After the race, which he won handily in 17:42, he agreed, "Yes, he started out too quick." Lapointe gave up the lead before the mile but to his credit, he held on to second place with a solid and for him Ranked runner time of 18:21.
Third place went to a man who has been racing for more than 45 years. He was winning trophies at races that would someday be part of the yet to be formed DC Roadrunners Club. Jason Page, 65, of Hamilton, VA (below) always starts out quickly but he knows how to pace as well. After the race, he said, "I knew the race distance was accurate because all my miles were 6:20." In the first mile he watched as runners in front of him could not hold their pace and he moved forward. At the end of the race he noted, "I thought I was fourth but third is even better." And indeed it was. Does he not know that the overall spots are supposed to be for the younger runners?
Persons (left) finished with 7:02 pace. Leonard was close behind in 22:03. Ten seconds later Crsytal Zancig, 28, grabbed the third spot. Masters runner Karen Young has already run more than a hundred races so far this year and it virtually certain to have them be at least 50 5Ks. She gunned after Kimberly Barnes on the final corner, coming up four seconds short in 22:36 to take the top masters spot.
If you only spot Bob Gurtler, 75, of the Plains, VA at only one race during any given weekend, it just means you did not try. Gurtler already had his 50 5Ks and more than a hundred race finishes. He also ran the Run! Geek! Run! 8K Saturday and the later that afternoon ran "just a little race" another 5K.
After the race, there was lots of food and drink. The drinks, Gatorade and bottled water, were well iced. The day was barely still summer but cold drinks are great after any race. Sure there were bananas and bagels but we earned some of those donuts as well. The awards went three deep in ten years age groups wish is nice for a race this size. Parking was very plentiful and the race course is just off the main drag, Leesburg Pike. There is plenty of room for this race to grow. The course was well-marked and the marshals fully prepared to direct the runners on a course that seems to loop around a bit but is really very easy to follow.
