Stone Ridge 5K Run for Education

By James Moreland
Stone Ridge, VA
October 16, 2010
For the Washington Running Report

The fun run started at 8:30 a.m., a half hour before the 5K.

The Stone Ridge 5K Run for Education started again, for the fifth time under the tri-colored balloon arch (gold, black, and white). The gusting white whipped the balloons back and forth as more than five hundred youngsters started the day with a 1 Mile Fun Run. This year the race started further up the road, near the middle of the shopping center. The Village Center Plaza was jam packed and though most of the kids did the fun run, there were scores of young ones lined up front behind the ChronoTrack timing mats. Liberty Elementary School was the defending champion with the most participation, earning the Stone Ridge 5K Cup, a traveling trophy, a small cash award, and bragging rights.

Before the race some of the runners were a little leery about the little ones, many of whom would flame out after a quick 400M burst at the gun. Age group winner Veena Reddy, 30, noted at the start. "I am not going to turn over anyone for a 5K." She smoothly eased around them to finish fourth overall in 19:21. Melissa Saunders, at 17, is definitely young but as a returning age group winner she improved to 19:18 for third overall. As a student athlete she could not accept monetary valued award. There was no cash this year. Her big concern was making the move towards a sub 19:00 5K.

Many of the local restaurants, especially Glory Days and Moe's Southwest Grill chipped in gift certificates to feed hungry age group winners. There were also lots of snacks for everyone after the race. Potomac River Running is everywhere and provided coupons for runners as well.

Keneni Chlal, 27, of Washington, DC was not too far ahead of Saunders with 19:10. Tezeta Dengersa, 30, of Washington, DC was all alone in the rarefied air, racing 17:39 for the second fastest event time with 17:39. Muluye Gurmu ran 17:28 last year. Only four men bested her race.  The top master Anita Freres, 45, of Reston, VA had been her before. This year she dipped below twenty minutes, just missing the Runner Rankings qualification for the Open Division with 19:49. Monique Rico, 42, (left) of nearby South Riding has run the race every year winning her division three times. This year's 21:06 was her slowest masters time but she was coming off an excellent second overall at the Heritage Half Marathon in 1:32:28 just two weeks ago.

(Right) Allen Vaughan, 60, of Stafford, VA has won his division twice in 2006 and 2009. He noted after the race that he was glad to see Capital Running Company at the race because it meant that the race was serious about doing it right. James Moreland, 58, of Gaithersburg, MD won the division in 2007-08 and at the start of the race the two were giving each other the evil eye. Vaughan had the special knowledge that he had moved onto the next age group. Moreland ran scared knowing Vaughan was right behind him and in the final meters, closing fast. Moreland prevailed in 21:00 with Vaughan easily handling the 60-64 in 21:08.

Only one runner had broken 15:00 in the event, Gurmessa Megressa in 14:56 the first year. He is often paired up with Demesse Tefera. Tefera had won last year in 15:16 a step ahead of Guy Alton for the second fastest time. He brought three other members from the African contingency planning on a payday. All four were faster than 16:00. The race is very generous with age group awards but is headed more in the direction of a family oriented race. Thus they have moved away from the prize money and have multiple youth divisions. The top prize did include a six month membership to the local gym.

Top rated in the 70-74 division, Bernie Gallagher is taking a brief respite to recover from an injury but he was there with his granddaughter who is already showing signs of speed.

The race is really not too far down the road for the Washington Region but with little regional advertising the runners came almost exclusively from local neighborhoods. Maryland runners were less than 1% of the field. The new course takes on much of the same area and it was well marked and measured. There are no real hills and times should be fast. Six runners set new records this year.
