Kevin Lynch, 43, of Chantilly, VA is top master in 18:03.
Valvoline Instant Oil Change 17th Annual Goblin Gallop 5K and 1K Fun Run has been going strong for 17 years. Though the Guinness people were at the New Orleans football tonight to count for the largest amount of the audience that were in costume, today's event with close to 2,000 had hundreds of costumed runners who were participating in this grand sporting event.
Race director Dixon Hemphill called out at the awards ceremony asking if anyone had run in all 17 years. He meant, proudly enough, anyone besides his son Peter Hemphill, 52. Peter lamented that he had just missed third place in his division by three seconds in a solid 21:24. Gary Grimsley, 56, of Springfield, VA just missed his goal of "breaking 20," finishing in 20:05 for second behind Richard Adams Jr. who again won his yearly pilgrimage to Fairfax Corner. But Gary was more interested in telling everyone how his 91-year-old mother had completed the race. Though the race stopped at 70-99, they found a special award for the eldest runner. Dixon can certainly relate as he is still racing and he is 88-years-old.
The event starts in the middle of the shopping center and it seems more like a carnival. Colorfully dressed runners by the hundreds were preceded in the 5K by a mass charge down the road by the kids. The center was booming with lively music as the "Sparkplugs" kept things hopping for the tenth straight year.
Many of the runners noted the course was a tough one but there were some significant downhill stages. Nearly all of the first mile was downhill and fortunately the last quarter mile roared back into the shopping center with a good downhill, leading to a flat final charge just past three miles.
That was perfect for both of the winners. The last time Demesse Tefera suited up against Joey Wiegner was at Kentland's in early September. Tefera dropped at the mile that day and watched as Wiegner just missed catching his training partner Gurmessa Megressa at the wire by a second in 14:43. Tefera was ranked number one in the Summer Runner Rankings. The two ran alone from the very beginning with Tefera holding him off 15:18 to 15:22.
For the women, masters champion Alisa Harvey is always tough. Before the race she was smiling because she prefers the cooler races. Everyone knows she is a world- class middle distance runner. Thus the goal of the other women was to put some distance in early. It would not be safe to challenge her for a final sprint to the line. Almaz Megersa Areda was coming off an overall win last week at the Crossroads 5K in Baltimore with 18:15. Laurel Jefferson had a solid third place at the hilly Back to School 8K earlier in the month.
Michelle Miller (below) had to be the favorite, racing last at Kentlands in 18:10. She had beaten Harvey by a minute at the Rockville Rotary 8K in July with 29:57. Still, Harvey had won it all in at the brand new Heritage 5K to start October with a spiffy 18:05. Areda fell off the pace first, then Jefferson. Miller kept a 30 meter gap and Harvey could not quite reach her as she triumphed in 18:10. Harvey nearly matched her Best of 2010 time for the 45-49 division with an excellent 18:17.
The race went three deep in masters awards. As always the race had lots of random awards and lots of food. We also learned that the John Quadrino Foundation, which joined the race in its second year, 16 years ago, has collected more than two million dollars to benefit children with cancer. All of the proceeds from the race go to the foundation, estimated at more than forty thousand dollars.
