World 100K Championships: Michael Wardian of Arlington, VA Wins Bronze, Leads USA Men to Team Silver

Michael Wardian, 36, of Arlington, VA earned the individual bronze medal, leading the U.S. men's squad to a team silver medal Sunday, November 7, at the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 100K World Championships in Gibraltar.Michael Wardian finished in six hours, 49 minutes, 18 seconds, and four additional U.S. men placed in the top 25. Chikara Omine of San Francisco, CA was ninth (6:58:09), Matt Woods of Falls Church, VA was 12th (6:58:36), Chad Ricklefs of Boulder, CO was 14th (7:01:36), and Joseph Binder of Berkley, CA was 25th (7:16:43).

Shinji Nakadai of Japan won the individual title in 6:43:44 as Japan won team gold. Jonas Buud of Sweden, last year's runner-up, took second in 6:47:40.
In the women's race, Meghan Arbogast of Corvallis, OR finished fifth (7:46:01), and Carolyn Smith of Milwaukee, WI finished ninth (7:58:26). The women's overall title was won by Ellie Greenwood of Great Britain in 7:29:05, and Great Britain earned the women's team title. Italy won team silver, and Japan claimed team bronze. Team USA did not have a scoring team.
