Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Fall Women 2010
Open Women
Army 10-Miler 55:54, 10K = 33:36
Melissa Rittenhouse, 34, of Harrisonburg, VA had a fine Army in 61:27 to take 17th place in the Open division.
Last year Samia Akbar won it all, defeating the favorite who had six overall wins. She did it by racing in the queen maker Army-10 Miler and the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K. This year she stayed away from both races.
Aziza Abate won at the Army 10-Miler with the second best time in 55:54, but she only had this one race. Akbar marched back out to win three races. Her first venture was a less-than-perfect Perfect 10 Miler in 59:55, well below her standards. Fourth place Michaela Courtney had that beat with her 17:11 victory at the Clarendon Day 5K. Lots of the top runners seem to like the Home Run 10K despite the fact that it's a hilly course and nobody posts fast times. Nevertheless, Akbar wins here in 35:36.
Meanwhile, Maria-Elena Calle is racking up the top 10-mile time, winning the Capitol 10 Mile in 58:13, but Courtney is right on her heels with an impressive third overall at the Army 10-Miler in 58:14. Tezeta Dengersa had the fastest 5K with her Race for World Peace 5K in 16:49. At this point, these three women are neck and neck, just a second apart.
Something has to break the logjam.
The final day of the ranking period, November 14, Maggie Infeld holds off Courtney at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K, 35:11 to 35:22. Just one day earlier, Akbar hoisted the cup at the HCA 8K in 27:00 for the fastest race and Calle ties that up with a brilliant 1:16:05 at her hometown McDonald's Half Marathon. Both of these times pull these two runners from Courtney and Dengersa.
Calle wins the crown with a superior Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) of 64 to Akbar's 52. Courtney and Dengersa need the MRF to separate them as well. Courtney wins big, 113 to 104, mostly because she beat so many more ranked runners in her races.
Sixth place Lindsey won the Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K in 17:11 and finished ahead of Infeld at the Race for World Peace 5K, 17:03 to 17:18. Still, Infeld's later overall win at Veterans Day 10K was just fast enough to hold off her challenger. Peggy Yetman's Army 10-Miler record in 58:52 earns her seventh place. She also finished third place behind Gallo at the Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K in 17:39.
Elena Orlova wins the battle for eighth on the strength of her overall win at Parks Half Marathon in 1:19:49 and an age group win at the Under Armour Baltimore Marathon in 2:49:50. Ninth place Sallie Ford earned her spot with her runner-up finish at the Fall Classic 10K in Charlottesville in 37:04 and her fine third place at the McDonald's Half Marathon in 1:19:34.
In all, 72 runners made the division.

19 & Under Women
Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff 9-11 Memorial 5K 18:58, 10K = 39:29
Avery Cunningham, 12, of Annapolis, MD often wins races outright. At Veterans Day she topped her division with 41:24.
Melissa Saunders made it to the Elite division again this year. She improved her time at the Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K by 20 seconds, winning in 19:44. The following week she was third overall at the Stone Ridge 5K Run for Education in 19:18 which secured her crown.
Amber Hawkins started the ranking period with an overall win at the Great Frederick Fair 5K in 19:31---also the second fastest ranked time. With the inconsistencies of youth her second race was three minutes slower.
The fastest of the four Gessler girls (Amy, Becky, Katie, and Julie) is the only qualifier for this ranking period. They all had one race, the HCS Metric 5K and Julie ran 19:32 to take third place in the division. Her second race was the rugged, just-for-fun, Run Through the Grapevine 8K.
There were 22 runners in this division.

35-39 Women
McDonald's Half Marathon 1:16:05, 10K = 34:23
Julie Sapper, 38, of Rockville, MD ran a solid Army in 1:09:28 to earn the 16th spot in the sub master division.
This year's Army 10-Miler was a mish-mash of confusion for this category as four of the top runners had net times so different from their gun times. Kara Waters took the long road, running both the Marine Corps Marathon and Under Armour Baltimore Marathon in less than three hours. Then, the 26.2 junkie ended the ranking period at the HCS Metric Marathon, good enough for nearly 70 racing miles.
Long before that, Maria-Elena Calle had chopped up the division, winning everything at the Capitol 10 Mile in 58:13. And so what if Brenda Schrank's fastest gun time at the Army 10-Miler (64:05) placed her behind Laura Zeilinger's (65:10) runner-up spot with a faster net time? Mary Davison must have been too close to the starting line because she ran 65:01 and she netted to seventh place.
The final weekend for runner rankings cleared things up. Calle lambasted everyone at the McDonald's Half Marathon in 1:16:05, nearly a minute faster than the performance that won the division last year for Elena Orlova.
Zeilinger was seventh overall at Veterans Day 10K in 37:56 to take the third spot. Waters' second and third efforts rated a 38:11 each.
Schrank won it all at the Freedom's Run Half Marathon in 1:27:13 to prove numbers do not lie and finished fourth. Fifth place Jennifer Sober is a yearly participant at the Great Allegany 15K on a roller coaster course. She backed up that prize with a second overall at the Baltimore Half Marathon in 1:27:28. A regular at West Potomac Park, sixth place Davison had two sub-40 minute 10Ks with the Boo! Run for Life and Veterans Day races.
This division had 29 runners.

40-44 Women
Army 10-Miler 58:52, 10K= 35:23
Beth Cottone, 44, of Charlottesville, VA had two solids marathons, including Richmond in 3:20:02, to finish 19th in the 40-44 division.
Elena Orlova looked majestic winning it all at the Parks Half Marathon in 1:19:49 to start this ranking period. Then, first weekend of October, she met one of the top challengers, Elena Kaledina, and easily vanquished her. The Home Run 10K course is not a fast one so their times of 36:58 and 37:53 were nothing special.
Peggy Yetman was getting ready to get back in the action. Her first start at the deceivingly tough Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K in 17:39 was solid, but not real scary. Fourth place Kristi Markowicz had already crossed that "bridge" as second master at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon in 1:20:42.
Now, it was time to go where the big dogs eat. Elena Kaledina had taken the division at Army 10-Mile last year in 60:35. This year she was going for a sub-60. She came up just short in 60:09 to take the third spot. Yetman laid down the gauntlet with a record setting 58:52 to claim the division. Orlova added a superb 2:49:50 win at the Under Armour Baltimore Marathon to cement her runner-up spot.
Hilary Carins took fifth running the Boo! Run for Life 10K in 39:10. Samantha Cole added three exclamations to her Run! Geek! Run! 8K for sixth place in 31:14.
In all, 37 runners made the division.

Army 10-Miler 62:03, 10K = 37:17
Anita Freres, 45, of Reston, VA seems to be getting faster, winning at the Holten Arms 5K in 19:34 to rank fourth in her division.
Alisa Harvey moved up into this new division and she likes the bright lights. So, when the brand new Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon brought out all the stars, she joined them to lead the way. She ran 1:26:13 and bested seventh place Cindy Conant's 1:30:43. Harvey started October at another new event, the Heritage 5K. Nobody seemed to want the overall win, so she took it in 18:10 ahead of all but one man.
Next on Harvey's agenda was the Army-10 Miler; she had won there four times and held the masters record until this year. Perhaps her best rival, Danielle Russell, was on an off season. She had run 61:57 last year. Harvey won her division there in 62:03. That took down sixth place Pamela Lovett (68:00), fifth place Linda Foley (67:36), and the only other woman with a sub 39:00 10K equivalent, Robyn Humphrey (64:36).
Humphrey added a smart overall win at the HCS Metric 5K on the final day to hold down the runner-up spot. Laura Shannon ran the final weekend Richmond HM in 1:30:02 for third place. Anita Freres, who finished fourth, had six age group wins as well as two overall wins, including the Holten Arms 5K in 19:34.
There were 48 runners who made this division.

Blue Moon Wicked 10K, 39:48
Elizabeth Baumgarten, 54, of Stone Ridge, VA won her hometown 5K in mid October to clinch 28th in the huge grandmaster division.Lee DiPietro often passes on the summer ranking season but she always comes back in the fall. She started the bidding on the very first day of this ranking period winning at the Run to Remember 5K in 19:42. Two weeks later DeeDee Loughran improved on her division win from the spring and put herself in strong contention to take her fourth division crown of the year with an excellent 40:39 at the Clarendon 10K.
While Loughran was going for the Marine Corps Marathon, the day before DiPietro added an overall win at the Miles for Megan 5K in 19:41. Then, the tornado from the south, Leisa Villani, smashed her own Virginia state record set in May (40:48) with an unbelievable second overall at the Blue Moon Wicked 10K in 39:48. For this ranking period it was her only event.
Sun Miner takes third place by defeating Loughran at the Marine Corps Marathon, 3:18:16 to 3:20:08. Miner was a second slower at her Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon (1:35:42) than fifth place Eleanor Kerr's finish at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon (1:35:41).
Fourth place Pat Wilkerson bested seventh place Dorothy Beckett racing the downhill slalom, Great Alleghany 15K. Sixth place Robin Goodwin looked good finishing fifth overall at the Rockville 10K in 43:29.
A total of 51 runners made the division.

Bowie Race for a Cause 5K 20:27, 10K = 42:55
The race for this division is all about two women---Betty Blank and Alison Suckling. Blank won 80% of time in the last three years and Suckling aged up this summer. Blank marched quickly to West Potomac Park and brought out the fastest 10K of the ranking period at the Boo! Run for Life 10K: 44:18.
Suckling, who prefers the shorter route, knocked out the fastest 5K of the ranking period at the Bowie Race for a Cause 5K in 20:27. Blank is always at the big races. In 2009 she had won Army 10-Miler and with it, the division. This year, she was a mere 20 seconds slower in her 1:12:48 victory, but that was only the fourth best time. Suckling added a swift Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department 5 Mile in 34:13 to cap the division. She finished October with a 21:00 Big Vanilla Halloween 5K.
The fourth place finisher, Joy Scruggs from Emory, VA and a new face on the rankings chart, ran the Good News Jail & Prison Ministry's Great 5K in 22:36. Third place Maria Shields, at 59, shrugged off losing a close battle at the Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon with fifth place Mary Ellen Hutchins, 1:46:25 to 1:47:35. Shields ended the ranking period with a very nice Down's Park 5 Mile in 37:29 and added an overall win at the Key School 5K in 22:49.
A total of 27 runners made the division.

Clarendon Day 10K, 45:16
Laurel Clement, 62, of Haymarket, VA had her best race to end the period at the Richmond Half Marathon in 1:53:54 to pick up the 7th place in the 60-64 division.
With Marge Rosasco on the warpath, Alice Franks was going to need a special race or two to recapture her title.
The first Sunday of the ranking period, Franks tossed out a 1:51:59 at the Parks Half Marathon. However, the day before, Naomi Stanford had aged up and taken a firm hold on the title. She surprised the field with a marvelous Abebe Bikila Day International Peace Half Marathon in 1:42:39.
Rosasco flung out a trio of sub-24 minute 5Ks, but they were not even close. Stanford ended September with a powerful Clarendon 10K in 45:16 and that was all she wrote.
Meanwhile, Franks was fighting through a rib injury and settled for fourth at the Army 10-Miler. Linda Mills came in from Salisbury, MD with a nice 1:19:21 at the Army 10-Miler to take third in the division. Betty Brothers moved into contention with Franks thanks to her 23:20 at the All Access 5K. Franks was still winning, but without her usual speed. The final day of the ranking period she rebounded at the Veterans Day 10K in 48:27, good enough to secure her spot.
Stanford hammered home some more truth at the MCM 10K in 45:43. That was more than enough for Rosasco's 21:27 at St. Ursula's 3 Mile, though it did grant her second place in the division.
A total of 29 runners made the division.

65-69 Women
Crapolfest 5K 24:15, 10K = 50:39
Dee Nelson started the ranking period at the Run for Life, a race that helped her win her division in 2009. This year she was nearly a minute slower in 24:41 but for a month, that time would hold up. BJ King had débuted in the spring as runner-up. She popped the fastest 10K in the first month with 52:41, but that was just a complement to her November Down's Park 5 Mile in 41:45. That was just enough to hold off Linda Tice for fourth place. Tice had gone long with a half marathon and the Seaside 10 Mile (1:27:38) to take fifth.
Joan Coven was back again to challenge for the crown, but she was being sidetracked by a new arrival to the division, Ann Hirn. The first weekend Hirn showed she was ready and sent Coven to the bench at the Hare & Tortoise New Quarter Park 8K. She was a minute faster than Coven's 2009 race, running 41:27 while Coven crossed the line way back in 43:04. Hirn had her worst race distance, a 10-mile, and Coven returned to outshine her at the Capitol 10 Mile, 1:27:06 to 1:29:14. Coven slingshotted that race into the fastest of the ranking period, winning the Crapolfest 5K in 24:15.
Meanwhile, Hirn was racking up wins. In November, she closed on Nelson with her win at the Kiwanis Town Center 5K in 25:00. Nelson was going to need help to catch Coven. She finished the ranking period with her second best race, a 25:18 at the Candy Cane City 5K in 25:18 and settled in third watching the race go down to the wire.
Hirn and Coven had split wins, but Hirn was leading with a big Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) calculated mostly from besting other ranked runners. All she needed was a race close to Coven's 5K time and the championship was hers to keep. The final weekend of the period, at the HCA 8K, Hirn blew down the doors with an excellent 39:47 and won the crown.

MCM 10K, 59:28
Ernestine Sheppard only ran one race in 2009, a marathon, and did not qualify for the rankings. This year she started the ranking period with one of her patented sub-30 minute 5Ks. Then, she headed back to Baltimore to take on the marathon.
Tami Graf spent the ranking period powering her way to age groups wins, nine to be exact, but it was not until the final day of the period that she was able to catch Sheppard's dash. Graf nearly matched her best 10K from 2009 with a nifty 1:01:37 at the Veterans Day 10K in West Potomac Park.
Ecris Williams struggled at the Army 10-Miler this year, racing nearly 15 minutes slower [THAN WHAT - check net times which are almost identical?]. On the cusp of November, she revived with a splendid 59:57 at the MCM 10K to take the division crown.

Yvonne Aasen seemed to get better as the season progressed. The first weekend of November she knocked off 17 seconds from her winning time at the Hog Neck Scamper 5 Mile. Then she moved over to Rockville to win the 10K in 1:12:47. Look for her to dominate the 80 and older division in 2011.
