More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon: Sheri Piers Wins Title in 1:17:27
From NYRRApril 6, 2011
New York, NY
The More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon was held on Sunday, April 3 in New York City; there were 7,496 female finishers. The champion of this year's race was Sheri Piers, 31, of Falmouth, ME with a winning time of 1:17:27. She received the inaugural “Meyerhoff” award presented by the parents, Cindi and Tom, of 2010 champion Sally Meyerhoff.
Sally Meyerhoff, 27, died on March 8 in a cycling accident near her home in Maricopa, AZ. Known for her fiery red hair, often in pigtail braids, and her running skirts, Meyerhoff was a favorite of participants and spectators alike. Meyerhoff was scheduled to defend her title in this year’s More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon.
Meyerhoff, an NYRR member, won four NYRR events in 2010. At last year’s More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon, she outran 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials winner Colleen De Reuck to set an event record of 1:14:40 despite bitter cold and rain. She also won last year’s Bronx Half-Marathon, Percy Sutton Harlem 5K, and Henry Isola XC Classic. She finished 27th in the ING New York City Marathon 2010 in 2:41:00.
Sheri Piers recently set a personal best of 1:14:27 at the NYC Half Marathon. A late bloomer as a professional runner, Piers is a two-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier. She finished 16th in the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials in Boston in a time of 2:38:46, and lowered her time to a personal best of 2:37:04 at the 2009 Boston Marathon.
Sally Meyerhoff's younger sister Samantha, 21, a junior and a member of the St. John’s University track and cross country teams, finished fourth (1:26:39) in the More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon.
“Sally and I were unbelievably close, and she always wanted me there to support her at her races,” said Samantha. “Running this race in her honor is something I know she would want me to do. She was my inspiration and motivation and still is. I don’t run for just myself anymore, I run because I know Sally had more passion for running than anyone will ever understand. She was an amazing best friend, sister, daughter, mentor, and athlete. If I become half the person she was, I will feel blessed. I miss her, and I know I’m not the only one. You’re forever in our hearts, Sal.”
Also participating in the event was United States Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, and talk show host Elisabeth Hasselbeck. The race attracted women from around the country. The course included a start on West Drive at 63rd Street inside Central Park; made two full, counterclockwise loops of the park; and a third loop entered the 72nd Street Transverse from East Drive to the finish line.
