Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Winter Women 2011

Open Women

Virginia is For Lovers 14K 50:43, 10K = 35:13

For the second year in a row, the numbers in the elite field were smaller than the year before. Nearly half (14) of the 32 qualifiers came from other divisions. Tezata Dengarsa rolled in early winning a 5K in 17:15 and a 10K in 36:01 within the first four days of the ranking period. Renee High did not even start racing until December, but when she did, she was golden, winning six of her races. Her Samuel Adams Surf-n-Santa 10 Mile in 60:14 put her in hailing distance. While Dengarsa eased up, taking the runner-up spot in the GW Birthday Classic 10K in 37:51, High laid down the hammer winning the Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 50:43.

Renee High, 29, of Virginia Beach, VA wins the Virginia 10 Miler in the Fall. She won the winter rankings title in the slightly shorter Virginia is for Lovers 14K in 50:43.

Third place looked like a close call with Michelle Miller at third place in the King of the Road 5K in 17:15. Michaela Courtney took the top spot at the year-ending Fairfax 4 Mile in 22:50. Things cleared up in their second races. Going head-to-head, Miller had a much better 17:57 ahead of Courtney’s 18:26 at the Love the Run You’re With 5K. Erin Swain takes fifth, squeezing in between the two at the 5K in 18:15. Nonetheless, even her best race, another second overall at the Jingle All the Way 10K in 37:32, was a minute behind these two racers.

The next five runners came from other divisions. It was a close battle between ninth and twelfth place to make the top ten. Teens came first, with Taylor Crosson racing the Festival of Lights 5K in 18:05. Denise Knickman tied for second with High for the most wins—six in all. She takes seventh place with her Tim Kennard 10 Mile victory. Eighth place Stephanie Smith-Olansen wins it all at the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K in 18:05. And ninth place belongs to Danielle Russell as she leads the 45-49 women with her Herndon Turkey Trot 5K in 18:25. Markowicz won it all at the Arlington Turkey Trot 5K in 18:26, good enough for the tenth spot.

Mina Thorstenson matches her best race with her Roanoke Drumstick Dash 5K in 18:25 for eleventh. Laurel Jefferson is twelfth with her bronze at the Jingle all the Way 10K in 38:16.

19 & Under Women

Festival of Lights 5K 18:05, 10K = 37:43

Taylor Crosson put her mark on the division early, winning the Ashburn Farm 5K outright in 18:49. This was just four days after Paige Callahan had upset the 12-year-old wunderkind Avery Cunningham at the Cold Turkey 10K, 40:00 to 40:05. Cunningham came back on Thanksgiving with a solid 19:47 Turkey Trot 5K and three more age groups wins, but could not get past the head-to-head to take second place.

Hannah Leffew ran the Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K to an overall win in 40:04. Along with her fine Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 58:14, she squeezed past Cunningham into third place. Rachel Byrd used her Powhatan Christmas Tree 10K in 40:55 to take the fifth spot.

Then, to end the year, Crosson pulled away from the group with an excellent 18:05 at the Festival of Lights 5K. Amber Hawkins had seven age group wins to take fifth place in this large group of 28 qualifiers.

35-39 Women

Frostbite 15K 56:20, 10K = 36:38

Maria-Elena Calle was way off her usual stuff. Still, she had the fastest race---for her only race. That left the door open for consistent Brenda Schrank, who had topped the division for 2010. She did all the right stuff, carving up the Shenandoah Valley region and going 9 for 9 in overall wins. Her best effort came in mid-January with a predictably fast 5 Miler in 31:32. That netted her fourth place.

Regulars, such as Mary Davison and Laura Ziegler, added a little too much fire power. Stephanie Smith-Olansen came out of nowhere and gunned down the division. In December, she put away Zeilinger’s Thanksgiving 5K effort in 18:35 with an overall win at the Santa Clause Shuffle in 18:20. Davison passed Schrank with her Samuel Adams Surf-n-Santa 10 Mile in 1:05:37, but even her best race, the Virginia is For Lovers 14K at third overall in 56:13, was not enough to move into the top two spots. Smith-Olansen added another overall win in January at the Frosty 5K in 18:28. Zeilinger returned to the Jingle All the Way 10K with 38:46 to secure the runner-up spot.

Lisa Reichman was fifth running the Turkey Burnoff 10 Mile in 1:06:54. Usually the smallest of divisions, it expanded to 20 qualifiers.

40-44 Women

Ashburn Farm 10K 37:35

As is often the case, some of the fastest runners do not do a lot of racing in the winter. Last year’s champion, Elena Orlova, was noticeably absent. Last fall’s champion, Peggy Yetman, took the lead at the Ashburn Farm 10K in 37:35 and then disappeared.

Denise Knickman revitalized her year getting faster as the season went on. She had a near perfect time winning six of her seven races. She finished second overall at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 1:03:50---what an improvement compared to her 1:08:05 in 2010. This quiet but fierce competitor even broke into a smile when congratulated about her time. Then she pressed on the next week in Salisbury, winning it all at the Tim Kennard 10 Mile in 1:03:09.

Denise Knickman, 42, of Baltimore, MD is on a roll with the top two races, 10 milers, including the Tim Kennard 10M Mile River Run in 1:03:09 to win the division the 40-44 division.

She needed all of that since Kristi Markowicz started her season with an overall win as well at the Arlington Turkey Trot 5K in 18:26. She only added one more race, the Love the Run You’re With 5K in 18:36.

Third place was very close, but a slight edge went to Hilary Cairns. She started the ranking period with a 30:49 at the biggest 5 miler, the Turkey Trot in Alexandria. In December, she finished in the money taking sixth overall at the Jingle All the Way 10K with 39:16. Fourth place Dolores Ware had won it all at the Samuel Adams Surf-n-Santa 10 Mile but her 1:08:34 just made the qualifying time for the elite division. She was second overall in February at the Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 55:50 to make the race very close.

One of the largest 10Ks in the region, the YMCA Turkey Chase in Bethesda, brought Lisa Chilcote to the forefront. She was fourth overall in 40:02.

Drumstick Dash 5K 18:14, 10K = 37:58

Division favorite Alisa Harvey bolted from the gate with the fastest race at the Drumstick Dash 5K in 18:14. Then she excused herself to get ready for indoor track. Diminutive Danielle Russell took the crown with a one-two punch to end November. First she won it all at the Herndon Turkey Trot 5K in 18:25. Then, on the “real” Thanksgiving, she finished second overall at the Ashburn Farm 10K in 38:41.

Mandana Mortazavi, 47, of Leesburg, VA who ran the holiday double of Ringing in Hope on New Year’s Eve, followed by the Rotary Resolution the next morning.

That same morning Anita Freres fired up her chariot and glided to an excellent 19:25 at the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K. That looked like all it would take as former champion Linda Foley had a sluggish start at the Ashburn Farm 5K in 20:52. Then Foley came flying back, adding four more age group wins. At the super fast Festival of Lights 5K, she ended the year in 19:23, while Freres slid back to 20:04 at her Reston New Year’s Day 5K.

Competition was stiff at the ranking period’s fiercest 10 miler. The RRCA Challenge produced a near photo finish with Robyn Humphrey beating Donna Wecker, 1:08:26 to 1:08:29. Sixth place Sheryl Kline was right in the mix with a nice Cold Turkey 10K in 41:12. Ruth Olson was one step ahead as top master at the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 19:49 and five other age group wins.

In all, 40 women qualified for the division.

50-54 Women

Virginia is For Lovers 14K 57:09, 10K = 39:41

The youngest grandmaster division exploded with a huge number of qualifiers: 37.  And that did not even include Leisa Villani who owns three major Virginia State records. Villani had the best race--her only race--at the unique distance Virginia is For Lovers 14K. Her pace equates to faster than her current 10K record.

DeeDee Loughran is no stranger to the record books either. Eight of her top nine races were major races. She topped the field at the most competitive one, the Jingle All the Way 10K in December with 41:45 to extinguish any hope for runner-up Margaret Taylor. Taylor had taken the lead boldly at the Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K with 42:37. The following week Taylor added a very nice Samuel Adams Surf-n-Santa 10 Mile in 1:11:40 to establish her bona fides.

DeeDee Loughran, 50, topped all grandmasters on the final day of 2010, winning the Ringing in Hope 10K in 41:29.

Still, Loughran would need another race to qualify. She did not wait for the end of the ranking period. She did not even wait until the end of the year. At the new Ringing in Hope 10K she added a fine 41:29 to earn the crown.

Third place D’Ellen Parter was at the Virginia is For Lovers14K--just behind Villani—and finished in 62:35. She also came in second to Taylor at the 10 mile race in 1:12:57.

Annapolis Striders Anniversary 15K 1:07:05, 10K = 43:37

Betty Blank got things underway, capping November with the fastest 5K at the Cranberry Crawl in a time identical to 2010: 21:45. The following Thursday she returned to triumph at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile in a division leading 35:23. Not surprisingly, her Turkey Burnoff 10 Mile, just two days later, was a bit off in 1:17:10. And so the chase was on.

Fourth place Peggy Mobray would close with a sold 21:59 at the CTC New Year’s 5K. The first week of December, Blank was showing signs of exhaustion at the Gar Williams Half Marathon where she finished in 1:48:14. Cindy White took over the lead with a swift Samuel Adams Surf-n-Santa 10 Mile in 1:13:10. Later, in February, she would have a very nice Colonial Half Marathon in 1:42:22.

Next on stage was Alison Suckling, who claims to prefer the track. So naturally, she swoops in and captures the crown with a very nifty Annapolis Striders Anniversary 15K in 1:07:05. Her second qualifier came a week later at the rolling hills of Druid Hill Park as first grandmaster with 35:41. Fifth place Donna Lewis earned her spot ahead of Peggy Swain-Ricely that same morning.

Richmond Turkey Trot 10K 46:08

Naomi Stanford aged up in the fall and filleted the division. Times are generally a little slower in the colder months. For the third year, Betty Brothers took the lead, racing the Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K in 48:49, a minute slower than her time from last year. In December, Stanford rolled out a marvelous 47:45 at the Jingle All the Way 10K, well ahead of third place Ginny Hughes in 49:32.

Leslie Stanfield improved by four minutes in her second winter 10K, racing Ringing in Hope in 54:33.

All of the top five runners are capable of sub-46:00 10Ks, but none have done that this year. Last year’s champion, Marge Rosasco, was fourth, running the BRRC Father Time Frolic 5 Mile in 39:19, but she has already claimed an injury and says her spring is doomed. Fifth place Alice Franks is coming off an injury which resulted in a Turkey Burnoff 10 Mile race that was three minutes slower than last year.

In the last two weeks of the ranking period Stanford cemented her spot, racing the Blacksburg 10 Mile in 1:18:42 and Rose Malloy joined the fray again with a solid B&A Half Marathon to pique our interest.

There were 25 women who made the grade.

Cranberry Crawl 5K 24:19, 10K = 50:25

At the start of the year the division nearly doubled and last year’s champion, Dee Nelson, again found herself in third place. This time it was a different runner who took away her runner-up shot. Nelson still had eight age group wins, led by a 24:57 to start the ranking period, as well as three of the top ten times. The following day B.J. King upset the cart winning at the Cold Turkey 10K in 51:37, good enough to get to second place.

Ann Hirn is starting to build a fortress around her crown. She bolted to the lead on the first day of the ranking period, winning the Governor’s Land 5K in 24:14. She finished with six of the top ten times, which included the fastest 10K of 2011 and a Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 1:14:28 that was an even faster race.

Elizabeth Glover is a close fourth, finishing right behind Nelson on the challenging Frozen Slopes 6K course.

Joan Coven is still a threat in her last year in this division. Linda Tice has already fired the best shot for the coming spring, leaving the division more up for grabs than ever.

Colonial Half Marathon 2:08:11, 10K = 57:55

National class Heidi Moebius came down from Lancaster, PA to run one race, the Colonial Half Marathon. Regular champion Tami Graf again spent a lot of time at the track running middle distance. She bolted out the first weekend of the season with the fastest 5K, followed by the fastest 10K. She had the six fastest qualifying times among her 12 age group wins.

Helen Ann Phillips ran two PVTC holiday races, taking the runner-up spot with a 33:01 at the Cranberry Crawl 5K. Janet Hughes, with nine wins, eased by Pauline Ely for third place and her best event was the elongated Treasure Hunt 5K.
