Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Spring Women 2011

Open Women

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 33:20

Susan Hendrick ran five major races spanning the spring, including the Capitol Hill 10K to finish 18th in the open division.

The racing season super heated, melting the winter away, at the St. Patrick’s Day 8K. Tezeta Dengersa laid down the gauntlet with the top 8K of the period in 28:03. Maggie Infeld was not far behind in 28:32. Two weeks later they met again at the National Half Marathon with Dengersa leading again 1:17:15 to 1:18:18.

The following weekend the monster Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K with 40,000 plus starting captivated Richmond. Last spring Samia Akbar had been runner-up in 33:19 on route to winning all of 2010. This year she fell back to sixth in the race with 34:45 just ahead of Maria Elena Calle’s 34:49. That earned Calle the sixth spot in the rankings. Dengersa, perhaps a little tired from the half had a disappointing 35:01.

Akbar repeated the second race of last year’s winning ways at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile but slowed eighty seconds and had to settle for second place. Yihunlish Delecha stepped onto the stage with a solid win in 56:57. As is often the case, the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K decided the top runners. Tezata recovered to run a very nice 33:39, still towing Infeld, a place behind in 34:07, to take second and fourth in the rankings. Delecha pulled ahead of everyone with her 33:20 finish. Akbar easily held fifth in the rankings.

Note that Delecha’s finish was seventh in a world class field. There is another race the always produces a world class field, Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M. That race has a separate start for the elite women and only those in that start are eligible for prize money. Many of the area’s top women were intimidated and held back allowing slower times to win cash.

Michelle Miller was coming off a third place winter ranking and stepped up to race with the elite field, finishing seventh overall wining big cash as the second American in 59:20, taking seventh in the rankings. Claire Hallissey fooled around with an easy 17:52 overall win at the Scope it Out 5K in March. Then at the big ten miler she lived up to her reputation snatching third in the rankings with her fifth overall in 56:17. As with many of our ranked runners, she lives in the area (Arlington) and comes from another country (United Kingdom).

After that it bunches up. Kara Waters 60:05 and Brenda Schrank 60:25 eschewed remunerations for their efforts at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M ahead of Laurel Jefferson’s 60:38. Lisa Thomas is tagged for fourth at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 60:04. That bested 12th place Erin Swain 1:01:1 and first master Kristi Markowicz 1:01:27.

We head toward their second race for guidance. Jefferson steps up pretty to eighth with a solid Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 36:04 ahead of 11th place Schrank 37:00. Waters takes tenth finishing second overall at the Packard Fiesta 5K in 18:09. Thomas takes ninth winning it all at the one of the five Crystal City Fridays 5K in 18:04

Seventy-one runners qualified for the division with 27 coming from other divisions.

19 & Under Women

Packard Center Fiesta 5K 18:00, 10K = 37:27

Courtney Melia blistered a fine 1:27:37 at the Anthem Half Marathon that would have just qualified for the men’s division as well. Only a handful of the very top women in their division can say that. It was enough to win even though she finished sixth at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K,

Lea Short was third overall at the Packard Center Fiesta 5K in 19:11 to take the runner-up spot. She backed that up with a 24:28 at the Port to Fort 6K.

After that two different birds flew across the finish line. Rachel Byrd, 16, of Powhattan, VA was second at the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 40:23 just ahead of third place Emily Bird, 19, of Richmond, VA (40:46). Rachel had an overall win at a Race for Hope in 19:30. Emily had started the season with a third place 5K award in 19:44 to make these two the only teens to crash the open division rankings.

In all, 32 women made the rankings.

35-39 Women

Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K 34:49

Brenda Schrank is on the cusp of the masters division finishing fourth submaster and 11th in the open division.

Usually one of the smallest divisions, this one starting off timidly with Lisa Thomas running the 14th fastest time to finish third overall at the Four Courts 4M. The following weekend Mary Davison traveled to Virginia Beach for the fastest half marathon in 1:26:00.

Then came April and the division expanded quickly to encompass a record 35 runners. Earning her top contender presumption, Maria Elena Calle hit the road flying with a spectacular Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 34:49. The following

Saturday she won it all at the CASA SuperHero 5K in 17:19. She capped the spring with the fourth fastest time in the division to win at the Carytown 10K in 36:10.

The following day Thomas bolted from George Washington’s home and raced into Alexandria in barely over an hour (60:07). That moved her best time up 10 places and narrowly won her the runner-up spot. The following weekend Brenda Schrank and Kara Waters might have earned cash at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom. Both of them declined to start with the elite women, which they are, and were not eligible for top ten cash though Waters was 10th in 60:06 and Schrank was 11th in 60:25.

Thomas holds off Waters with her two overall wins at the 5K and runner-up spot at Capitol Hill 10K in 37:06. Schrank added an excellent Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 37:00 to go with her 37:32 fourth place finish at the Apple Blossom 10K to muddy the waters.

Davison stepped up in May to win the Manassas Runway 5K in 18:04 to take fifth place in the division.

40-44 Women

George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile 1:01:27, 10K = 36:56

Cheryl Young had a nice Pike's Peek in 42:24 to take 14th in the 40-44 division.

This battle for the top master was extremely close. Denise Knickman has been improving all year. She wins fifty percent of her races out right. She bested 34 ranked runners in her division in her five races this period. A week after being top master at the Yeungling Shamrock Festival Marathon in 2:57:06 she won it all at the White Hall 15K. In April, she knocked another minute off her fastest 10M finish second at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:02:21. Then she finished fifth overall at the 5K by the Bay in 18:39 before torching the masters field at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K with her fastest masters 10K in 37:02.

Kristi Markowicz also had five of the top 14 races. She started humbly with a Four Courts 4M in 24:30. Then she took on the Parkway Classic 10M in 1:01:27 for the fastest race of the period and top masters honors. She ran well at two of the Crystal City 5Ks, winning one in 18:21 before capping her spring with a third overall all at the Capitol Hill 10K. She prevails 102 to 88 in Moreland Racing Factors points.

Third place Peggy Yetman was unhappy at Credit Union Cherry Blossom struggling home in 1:02:40. In May, she ran the fastest 4 mile of the year in 24:13. Get ready for a three way battle this summer.

Maureen Ackerly ran a spiffy Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in 38:02 to stay in contention. She had won the SPCA 5K overall in 18:53 in March. Lisa Chilcote has to reckoned for as well, racing the top among qualifiers at the National in 1:25:12. Dolores Ware matched that at the Anthem HM for her solo effort. Elena Orlova will be a factor as she started to round back into shape at Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek in 38:12. She will be the favorite if she is in racing shape this summer.

45-49 Women

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K 37:45

Lisa Chilcote did her damage early in March with an excellent 19:02 at the Scope it Out 5K to take fifth in the 40-44 division, 19th in the open.

Harvey, Harvey, Harvey! Alisa Harvey came into the division with the usual expectations – victory. She had breezed through the fall. In the winter she hits the track but come spring she wants the top spot on the roads. Perhaps her biggest disappointment was her division winning Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 37:45 where she was relegated to second master. Her other four races always had her on top and in two of the races winning it all. Her slowest race was the Apple Blossom 10K in 39:11.

Linda Foley takes the runner-up spot racing Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 39:13. She matched that race exactly with her Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 miler in 1:05:15. The 10-mile race was big. Andrea Wright won at Charlottesville in 1:05:56 to take third. Robyn Humphrey nearly matched her 1:06:45 at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 with a more satisfying overall win at the Clyde’s 10K in 40:10 to take fourth.

The fifth spot was like a greased pig, very hard to hold on to. Anita Freres takes it by the slimmest of margins as second master at the George Washington Parkway Classic in 1:06:55. Donna Wecker was next racing fourth age group at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 1:06:57. Wecker added a second age group at Kelly’s Shamrock 5K. Freres was the overall winner at the Reston 10 Miler.

Seventh place goes to a runner who is used to being the overall winner. The four fastest 5Ks of the period produced overall wins every time. Lovett had two of them. Harvey, of course, had the other two.

As running continues to bloom, fifty women qualified for the division

Anthem Shamrock Festival Half Marathon 1:27:27, 10K = 39:31

Rarely does a marathon win a division, even a sensational 3:14:35 run by DeeDee Loghran at the SunTrust National. It is even hard to win with a half marathon but not when you knock nearly a minute off the Virginia state record as did Leisa Villani at the Anthem Marathon. Division winner Villani added a bright bonus at the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in April with 1:30:44. Loughran had an answer for that second race winning Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 40:08 to finish second in the division.

Cindy Conant entered the division midway and her Cherry Blossom (1:07:15) at age 49.95 might have made it very close. Her year’s best 5K in 19:53 at the Race for Hope in May added another player to the mix. She was followed closely by Pat Wilkerson 1:09:02 and Eleanor Kerr 1:09:11 at the ten mile. Kerr finished behind Conant at the Race for Hope with in 20:14; while Wilkerson’s top 5K was 20:09 at the Kelly’s Shamrock.

Hosni Haghighian takes the sixth spot with a swift Charlottesville 10M in 1:10:06. Right behind her Win Persina was second at Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 42:15.

An amazing 49 women made the division.

Cherry Pit 10 Mile 1:08:27, 10K = 41:08

Alexandria’s Merrilee Seidman, 56, had some good races this past spring and finished 12th in the division.

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile is the proving ground. Allison Suckling pulled away handily to breeze in for the title in 1:12:14. She followed the next week with a fast Altholton 5K in 20:58. The course has been called a mite short but there are enough hills and turns to even things out. She had won it all on the track 5K with 21:56.

Meanwhile back at the 10 miler, Betty Blank may have been wondering who this Cindy White was that had raced the year’s best half marathon in Virginia Beach with 1:40:14. But as the race was ending she had no time to worry about that, she just wanted to catch that woman just ahead of her, whoever she was.

Sure enough it was White. Blank passed her and crossed the finished line 3.99 seconds ahead of White. White, who was credited with a four second late start was officially declared third place ahead of Blank. Place is decided by the race; time is decided by the gun. Blank helped her cause winning it all the following week at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 44:15 to take the division runner-up spot.

Fourth place goes to a rising star Heather Sanders of McLean, VA. She bolted into contention by pushing Blank down the pike, coming up just short in 45:24. Donna Lewis finally left the confines of the RASAC nation in northeast Maryland to take fifth place with her very fine Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:16:09

Thirty-five women qualified for the division.

National Half Marathon 1:41:25, 1OK = 45:50

The reclusive Naomi Stanford is unbeatable racing the National Half Marathon 1:41:25 in her solo effort. Last period’s champion was working her way to a faster summer, getting faster with each spring event. She notched the year’s fastest 5K on the final weekend in 23:47 at the Lassos Running of the Bulls. That was just enough to pass by Maria Shields who had run 23:55 the week before. Shields lost the tie for third with Linda Mills, with running a Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:22:52. Shields had run the same day Cherry Pit in 1:27:51. Mills ended the period strong winning the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:14:52.

Like cream rising to the top Alice Franks moved up from fifth to take the crown. She takes to the spring like the flowers, racing the second fastest 10 miler at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:20:39 to match her best time from last year. She improved two seconds at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 48:40 to cement the title.

Ann Rosenthal takes fifth place with a very nice Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:24:56. Last period’s runner-up Betty Brothers is next with a solid 5K. Her only other race was an energy draining marathon trip in Virginia Beach.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 1:22:16, 10K = 49:26

Dee Nelson ended March by nearly breaking her own 65-69 record at the Charlottesville 10M in 1:24:34. It was the single age record by 12 minutes. The following week she slowed only a minute off last year’s win at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M with 1:23:55. That opened the door a crack and Elizabeth Glover came barreling through. Glover had finally taken Nelson at the rolling hills of the MCRRC Piece of Cake 10K 51:13 to 52:14. Full of confidence, she mowed down the field at the area’s most competitive 10 miler with a sterling 1:22:16 for the crown.

Nelson slowed a mere five seconds to win the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 49:40 to earn the runner-up spot. Former 60-64 division champion Chris Craun is back on the roads again and her début challenge there in 51:30 was enough to move her into third place. She had tested the waters first at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:26:50.

Ann Hirn had the fastest 5K of the period, running the Run for Shelter in 24:57. She appears to have taken over the mantle from Joan Coven, 69, whose TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 42:14 for seventh place would swamp her division of the future.

Linda Tice outpointed BJ King for the fifth spot with her Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 25:11. King ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 1:27:31.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile 1:28:34, 10K = 53:14

Tami Graf of Lusby, MD is always the most prolific racer with more than fifty races a year. The week after the Fourth of July she moves on to take on the 75-79 division. She started the period getting on track at the McDaniel 5K in 32:04. Last spring’s champion Nancy Fraser was quick to respond the same day, knocking a minute off her Martha Jefferson 8K from last year to take a solid lead.

The last weekend of March Fraser put the race out of reach winning the Charlottesville 10M in 1:42:19, five minutes faster than last year. Heidi Moebius came down from Lancaster, PA to join an elite field at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile for a world class 1:28:34.

Last year’s third place, Janet Hughes, also on the cusp of the division, ran a very nice Apple Blossom 10K in 1:09:14. She was usurped as Sandra Cullen entered the division running in her hometown Ashland Railroad 10K in 1:07:25

Harriet Locke of Bristol, VA-TN doubled at the Animal Chase, running both the 5K and the 10K. Her first race was enough to take another spring title in 33:26. Two runner/walkers from Williamsburg made the division. The youngest, Ann Manciagli, was runner-up in 34:45. The oldest, Pat Eden, is the first to jump ship into the 80 & older division. Yvonne Aasen and Jacqueline O’Neil follow this later this year to make that division competitive.

Animal Chase 10K 1:11:11

The city of Richmond, a suburb of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K, again had a mass of seniors, eleven of them 80 or older, racing their solo effort of the spring. Ruth Ketron from the southwest corner of the region ran twice as long this year at the Animal Chase 10K and crushed her effort at the 5K from last year, light years ahead of the rest of the field.

Four of the 17 runners with a single race had times faster than Martha Trimmer but she added quantity to her quality with four finishes and another crown.
