Boston, MA
Janet Cherobon-Bawcom of Rome, GA won the B.A.A. Half Marathon on Sunday, October 9, followed on Monday, October 10 with the USA Women's 10K Championships title (32:47). It was her third national title of the year; the win secured Cherobon-Bawcom's position as the women's titlist for the 2011 USA Running Circuit.
Unseasonably warm conditions greeted the women's field for the 35th annual Tuft's Health Plan 10K, host of the USA 10K. The lead pack of women opened with a mile split of 5:08.
Janet Cherobon-Bawcom positioned herself at the front of the pack, which also included two-time women's 10K champion Katie McGregor of Minneapolis, MN; Kim Conley of West Sacramento, CA; Emily Brown of Minneapolis, MN; Tera Moody of Colorado Springs, CO; and international athletes Bekelch Bedada of Ethiopia and Megan Brown of Canada.
Nearing two miles, Bedada, Cherobon-Bawcom and Conley opened a 10 meter gap on McGregor and Moody with Cherobon-Bawcom clearly in control.
Running away from Bedada and Conley at three miles, Janet Cherobon-Bawcom quickly opened a 10 meter lead. She passed 5K in 16:12 and extended her lead to 17 seconds at four miles, as Katie McGregor overtook Conley to move into second.
Janet Cherobon-Bawcom cruised to the finish (32:47) to celebrate a 30 second victory ahead of McGregor (33:16), while Kim Conley held on for third (33:35).
