Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Summer Women 2011

Open Women

Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 27:03, 10K 34:20

Anna Holt-Gosselin is fourth in the elite division, winning here at the Run! Geek! Run! 8K.

Two of the top three racers are sub-masters with a combined seven overall wins which is great, but Tezata Dengara gave them no opening at all. She crushed the competition in all four of her races.

At the murderously hot Crystal City Twilight 5K, Dengara made it look easy in 17:11, besting Maria Elena Calle’s first try at the Cul De Sac 5K with 17:15. Dengara had already put away the division early with a 16:42 win in June at Damien's Run for Recovery 5K. She matched that at the fast, cool Kentlands/Lakelands 5K to end the period for two of the top three fastest times.

Calle had the fourth best time to outscore Lisa Thomas at the Pony Pasture 5K in 17:02. Thomas won big at five major races and had a sterling Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in 1:19:03. Her only two setbacks were a fourth overall in 17:41 behind Dengara at Crystal City. Even more telling was the week before on one of the biggest stages, the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K. Thomas was third overall in 28:47, while Tezata was not far off the course record. Only Julie Culley has run faster than 27:00 in the last 20 years (26:58 in 2008).

Anna Holt-Gosselin, 23, of Vienna, VA is a new face on these pages. She started easy with an overall win at the Friends of the W&OD 10K in 36:55 to end July. Then she bolted up a dozen places, finishing fourth at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 17:20. Her coach says he is not even letting her train hard yet. though she already blew the doors off a tough field at the Run! Geek! Run! 8K to start the fall season.

Williamsburg’s Darcy McDonald ventured north twice to win it all with fast 5Ks. In June she finished the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 17:35. Then on her way back to Williamsburg she stopped in Reston the following week at the Firecracker 5K to light them up in 17:28 to take fifth in the division.

Sixth place Lindsay Wilkins finished a mere five seconds off Lisa Thomas’s win at the Leesburg 20K in 1:17:45. On Labor Day weekend she moved up the ranks at the Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in 1:40:43. Fourth overall at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 28:49, seventh ranked Lucinda Smith was almost a minute ahead of top master Elena Orlova’s 29:36. The following week Orlova, who has been having a somewhat erratic year, bolted back at the Crystal City 5K to finish third overall in 17:38, just ahead of Lisa Thomas (17:41) to take the eighth position.

Sallie Ford is ninth, racing in the runner-up spot at the Charlottesville Women’s 4 Miler in 23:01. Keneni Chala rounds out the top ten at the New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in third overall with 17:45.

Fifty-nine women earned a place in the Elite rankings; sixteen came from other divisions.

19 & Younger Women

Runnymede 8K 30:57, 10K 39:17

The teen division grew to 46 runners, the second largest behind the Open Division. In an unusual manner, this division was real easy. Hannah Oneda, 16, of Westminster had the two fastest races by at least a minute. She won both races on hilly courses. Stephanie Cario had two solid 5Ks finishing first and second overall to take a close runner-up spot. Anna Stone was tops at the Lawyers Have Heart 5K in 19:32 to claim third place.

Fourth place goes to one of Bob Gessler’s four racing daughters, Julie. She was second overall at the Father’s Day 8K in 32:24. Taking the fifth spot is consistent Lanie Smith, who ran the Reston Women’s Distance Festival 5K in 19:52. Then she matched that event going four times as long at the Leesburg 20K.

The next two racers come from running families. For this ranking period Tiffany Lang was the fastest of the three Lang girls. Not only was she the overall winner at the Oakland Mills XC 5K in 19:56, but she also added a solid 8K in 33:50. She was overhauled by Sarah Zielinski who won the Run for Freedom 5K in 19:57 and added the Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal 5 Miler overall victory in 33:41 to take the sixth position.

35-39 Women

Pony Pasture 5K 17:02, 10K = 35:43

Lisa Thomas had a great summer: of her seven victories, six were major races, five were overall wins and by July 16th she had the top five times in the division. But then Maria Elena Calle, the spring champion, came out to play.

Cristina Burbach, 35, ran at the inaugural Let Freedom Run 5K to gain 16th place among the sub masters.

First Calle negated Thomas, winning it all at the Cul de Sac 5K in 17:15. Then she put away the division winning the Pony Pasture 5K in 17:02. Thomas came back strong, improving her half marathon time from the first week by four minutes at the Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon in 1:19:03, earning the second fastest race of the period. She closed strongly from earlier in the year and has to be the favorite to win in the fall.

Jackie Gruendel looked strong finishing third overall at the Let Freedom Run 5K in 18:44. The race features a very nice half mile downhill early in the race and the final half mile is set up beautifully by yet another downhill. In between, you do not want to know. Her second race in Crystal City later in July is pancake flat, but her 18:44 was a better race. That evening the grill was set too high and nobody came back still hydrated. When you have ice and sponges and four water stops in a 5K, do not expect a PR.

Melissa Rittenhouse added a nifty 40:11 at the Leesburg 10K to take the fourth spot. She already had a slight edge over Rachel Northup’s second overall at the Pony Pasture 5K in 19:15 with her overall win at the Summer Extravaganza 10K in 39:45. Sixth place Mary Davison is always in the mix, racing the Semper Fi 5K in 19:15.

40-44 Women

Crystal City Twilight 5K 17:38, 10K = 36:43

A three-way battle was predictedcontinuing from the spring between Kristi Markowicz, Denise Knickman, and Peggy Yetman. Make that four ways.

After a lackluster showing at the Pike’s Peek 10K, former champion Elena Orlova is back. At the biggest 8K of the summer in Rockville she sat down Yetman (31:21) and Knickman (31:45), giving the lecture meaning with her swift 29:36 masters win. The following week she returned to Crystal City to dominate with the fastest time of 2011 in 17:38, well ahead of Markowicz who finished in 19:10.

Knickman had an age group win in all 12 of her races. Her best race was the Too Hot to Trot 10K where she had an overall win in 38:35 to take fourth in the division. Markowicz had an overall win at the misguided Go Fourth 9K but her best effort was 18:10 at the Lawyers Have Heart 5K (shortened from 10K to a 5K due to the extreme heat). It was going to be hard to decide what to do next as Yetman had run the Leesburg 10K. Her time of 38:15 was right behind Markowicz’s 37:49 equivalent. Then, Yetman took on the surprisingly fast Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 18:01 to snatch second place.

Lisa Chilcote ran the Semper Fi 5K in 18:39 and took the fifth spot.

45-49 Women

Lawyers Have Heart 5K 17:59, 10K = 37:26

The division grew to 41 women but one name stood out prominently: Alisa Harvey. While she does not enjoy competing on really hot days this year she persevered, racing five major races to take the top five times in the division. It should be noted that she did not race in August and neither did any other runner with a top 20 time. Last year Lawyers Have Heart was a 10K and decided the division with a 39:37. This year heat changed the course to a 5K. Harvey blew away the division with a 17:59.

She moderated her pace with two 8K victories, both were elite races with national class times. She added the sweltering Crystal City Twilight 5K and finished second overall at the inaugural Let Freedom Run 5K.

Donna Wecker was one of four women to win it all but her 25K trail race just barely made the top 100 times. Meanwhile, Pamela Lovett started the season with a second overall at the 5K Run/Walk for Autism. Her time was 19:32. Diane Haupt had an overall win at Port Warwick in 20:11, but she already had her best entry as the masters winner at the We Build People 5K in 19:44 to take fourth in the division.

Linda Foley had two overall wins early in the ranking period, each faster than 20 minutes, as she was packing her bags to move to the next division. She added another trophy, returning to the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler to take fifth in the division. In early July, Wecker got her redemption winning at the HCS Women's Distance Festival 5K in 19:28 to edge Lovett for the runner-up spot in the division.

Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 31:34, 10K = 40:04

Dee Dee Loughran started off the ranking period with a solid overall win at the Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion 10K in 41:46. As with last summer, it was not even close to her best race. In late June she failed to repeat as overall winner but knocked 24 seconds off last year’s race at the Reston WDF 5K, finishing second in 19:25. The spring ranking champion, Leisa Villani, did not come out until the last weekend and her Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon was more than a minute per mile slower than her state record (1:27:15) that she just missed resetting in the spring.

Sushila Nanda, 50, has trimmed down even more and her times have improved with 12 age groups wins, earning her sixth in the division.

Cindy Conant took out everyone as well, winning the Capital Crescent 5K in 19:49. Then she won it all at the PGRC Women’s Distance Festival 5K in 19:36 to add some weight. That was the third best race. Both runners had four of the top eight times. Loughran returned to the Leesburg 20K for a sterling 1:25:53. Conant took the division racing a mighty 31:34 on the rolling Rockville Rotary 8K which featured an extra loop de loop in the fourth mile to confound the tiring racers.

Pat Wilkerson had four of the next five times, all fast 5Ks. She won the River Valley Ranch Trail Run 5K in 20:06. In all, five grandmaster women had seven overall wins. Former masters champion Jill Hargis has been making a big time comeback this year. She just missed an overall win by one place at the Dawson’s Day 10K in 43:08 to take the fourth spot.

Sushila Nanda exploded into the division with 12 age group wins, including one overall and two runner-ups. She finished second to Conant at the PGRC 5K. She looked golden for the fifth spot. Then, in late August, Hoshni Haghighian came off a sluggish Patrick Henry Half Marathon in 1:44:36 and rebounded with an excellent 27:05 at the Charlottesville Women’s 4 Mile to overtake Nanda.

Kentlands/Lakelands 5K 21:11, 10K = 44:06

This division grew more than 33% to 30 qualifiers. As is often the case, the battle is over who can catch the favorite--Betty Blank. Living close to Bluemont Park, she knows the course well. She won easily in June at the DCRRC Women’s Distance Festival in 21:45, slightly slower than last year. In August she came back stronger and, on the same course for the Bluemont 5K, improved on last year to be the top master in 21:35.

Meanwhile, her sometime nemesis, Alison Suckling, was securing all seven of the Best of 2011 times from 400 meters to the 5K. By late June, she was still behind, running the Tim Harmon 5K in 22:18. Blank had seven of the top 11 times and her Alexandria Running Festival Half Marathon in 1:43:30 was well ahead of Peggy Mowbray’s Run For the Dream Half Marathon in 1:48:06. Cindy White had the fastest 8K of the period, racing the Run for the Children 8K in 37:08.

In the final weekend everyone made their move, except Blank who rested. White took fourth place racing the Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon in 1:43:13. The day before, Mowbray lit up the Charlottesville 4 Mile in 28:47 for the fastest time of 2011 and earned third place. Prior to September Blank had the top five times, but at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Suckling rolled out the game winner with a swift 21:11 to snatch the crown.

Too Hot to Trot 10K 48:29

Marge Rosasco started the ranking period with a couple of top notch 5Ks that included the Bel Air Town Run in 24:04. That sent her past last summer’s champion, Alice Franks, who had won opening day at the Germantown 5-Miler in 39:59. Fifth place Betty Brothers had her best race early with the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 50:43. By June Maria Shields had aged up and moved past Brothers, winning the Dawson’s Day 10K in 50:29.

Linda Kearney, 64, races the Leesburg 10K in 52:46 for eighth place in the division. Look for her to make waves in a year when she ages up.

August was so hot that only three of the top 30 races were run that month. Franks had the second best of them (29th place) with her victory on the tough River Rumble Half Marathon course. Then, for some reason, the Too Hot to Trot course, which had been shortened from 5 to 4 miles in 2010, morphed into a 10K this year. Rosasco bolted to the top with a swift 48:29.

In the last weekend Shields had her fifth age group win at the Baltimore Grand Prix 5K. Her time on the shortened course was equivalent to 48:30 for her best race by far. Rosasco takes the title with six of the top 10 races. Linda Scandore came up with her best effort Labor Day weekend at the biggest and most competitive event, the Charlottesville Women’s 4 Mile. She raced an excellent 30:50.

Alzheimer's Association Brain Health 5K 23:08, 10K 48:10

Dee Nelson had by far the best race in this division, running the 5K in 23:08. She won all eight of her races. Her second best race was the Save the Trail 5K in 24:49, which would give some of the others a chance. Linda Tice aged up and came close with 24:58 at the fast Lake Montebello 5K in June.

Joanne Murphy won at the Baltimore 10 Mile though her official time was slower than fifth place Chris Craun. But she earned the third spot on the very short Baltimore Grand Prix 5K (it was 4.75K at most), giving her a 52:47 10K equivalent. B.J. King takes fourth place, racing the AS Dawson's 10K in 53:58. Craun was tops at a second major race, the Autism Speaks 5K in 26:07. Sissy Logan finishes in sixth place, running the Appalachian Power Festival 5K in 26:05.

Pony Pasture 5K 30:19, 10K = 1:03:07

Ecris Williams made a rare summer appearance winning three of the top four spots in this division. Her best time on a tough Leesburg 10K in 1:04:34 was faster than either Ernestine Shepherd or Tami Graf ran. (Note: Both were 74 when they started the ranking period.)

Nancy Fraser started with a fairly tame Kiwanis Club Independence Day 5K in 33:18. Then Labor Day weekend she bolted into the runner-up spot with a very nice Charlottesville 4 Miler in 40:55. Shepherd’s qualifier was from the first weekend of the ranking period, a faint shadow 34:28 that was almost five minutes slower than last year’s crowning MCVet 5K. It still earned her fourth place.

Graf, always prolific, raced five races before aging up, along with a number of national class middle distance events. She had her best qualifier at the Yorktown Independence Day 8K in 51:51 to take the third spot.

Both Tami Graf and Ernestine Shepherd only had three races each. Graf had her best race ahead of Aasen in Frederick with 30:29. Shepherd had three of the top four times to win the crown. Her best effort was the Arbutus Firecracker 10K in 1:04:08.

Her Kentlands/Lakelands 5K had a net time that was second fastest for the division.
