Open Women

Veterans Day 10K 33:04

Michelle Miller had a fine runner-up placement at the Run! Geek! Run! 8K to take ninth in the open division.

Tezata Dengera ran seven of her nine races in major races. She won four of them, including Army (56:35) where she triumphed over four of the top ten qualifiers. Third place Shiferaw Tiringo-Getachew finished close behind her in a fine 56:44. Perhaps Dengera’s worst placement was at the Baltimore Marathon, though it was her best race. It is the most competitive marathon in the region and she was fourth in her division with 2:37:52. Two weeks later she won it all at the Marine Corps Marathon in 2:45:28. Tiringo-Getachew confirmed her spot with her Baltimore Marathon finish in 2:40:23. She also appeared at Marine Corps for third overall in 2:47:30.

Nicol Traynor matched Dengera’s eighth best race running the Charlottesville Fall Classic 10K in 35:58. Then in the final weekend of the period, she lit up brightly at the HCA Virginia 8K with 26:35 and mere second behind Dengera, earning the runner-up spot. Amanda Rice takes the fourth spot at Army with a nifty 57:16.

Former champion Hirut Mandefro was all over the place but always third place or better. The first week of the period she won the Chick Fil-A 5K in 16:58, ahead of Tiringo-Getachew’s third place finish in 17:18. Eighth place Darcy McDonald slipped into second there with 17:11. Mandefro’s best race was a ten second victory ahead of Dengera at the BCC 5K in 16:45. Tiringo-Getachew was third there in 17:02. McDonald ran struggled somewhat to finish in 18:01. Mandefro also bested Dengera at the Virginia 10 Mile 58:21 to 58:58.

Rena Chesser had two wins, including her best at the Downs Syndrome 5K in 16:55 to take sixth place. Seventh place Anna Holt-Gosselin matched her Army 10 Miler of 59:19 exactly with a third overall at the Veterans Day 10K with 35:39. Michelle Miller finished second behind Holt-Gosselin at the Run! Geek! Run ! 8K but earned the ninth position at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM, finishing third overall in 1:19:43. Peggy Yetman, 40, rounds out the top ten, finishing Army in 60:01.

The division is still massive with sixty-nine qualifiers, 21 that came from other divisions.

Ellen's Run 5K 18:55, 10K = 39:23

Ava Farell won the division in mid October with an excellent overall triumph at the Ellen’s Run 5K in 18:55. The following week she was runner-up at the Back to School 8K in 33:24. Both ninth place Annie McElvein and fifth place Katriona McNeill, Katriona were there at both races. Avery Cunningham had the 20th fastest race at the Run 4 Shelter HM the first day of the fall. She waited until November before moving up to the runner-up spot with the Down’s Park 5M in 32:58.

Elizabeth Long holds third place with an overall win and a season opening Chick Fil-A 5K in 20:15. Morgan Wittrock had three 5Ks in October. Her best by far was the GTSI Charity Run 5K in 20:14.

Twenty runners made the division.

Vinton Fall Classic 5K 17:37, 10K = 36:41

There is a lot of firepower in this division. When newbie Kristie Connelly appeared on the scene with a third overall at the Goblin Gallop 5K in 18:05, she was pushed up to the favorite spot. This was even though Alice Kassens had set the standard at the Vinton Fall Festival 5K with a sparkling 17:37. Kassens had started with the best race through September at the Virginia 10 Mile in 1:06:06.

As the season wore on it was clear that many of the top dogs would not get a second race qualifiers. Many of them met with Connelly at the Veterans Day 10K on the final day where she had a somewhat disappointing 38:41 as the fourth fastest submaster. It did confirm her as runner-up for the division.

The third spot was extremely close. Melissa Rittenhouse had a very good Army in 1:04:55 to move ahead of Kara Waters who had run the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge 5K in 19:39. Waters added an excellent Baltimore Half Marathon in 1:24:21. Rittenhouse just passed her on the final week HCA Virginia 8K in 29:59.

Fifth place Jen Sober again dominated at the Great Allegany 15K in 59:36 but surprisingly it was not her fastest race. Three weeks later she won it all at the Bishop Ireton 5K in 18:23. Sixth place Stephanie Hoag won it all at the Komen Maryland Race for the Cure 5K in 18:37. The next two places were tight with both women winning it all in their best two races. Stephanie Smith-Olansen won the Sunset Six 6K in 22:49 while Jennifer Quarles won the Crapolfest 5K in 18:49 to exactly match. Quarles broke the tie winning four of her six races, while Smith-Olansen won two of her three. Neither ever finished lower than third overall.

Twenty-two runners made the division.

Army 10 Miler 60:01, 10K = 36:04

Kim Isler, 43, was the second master at this year’s Goblin Gallop 5K.

Elena Orlova started the season repeating as champion at the Parks HM, this time in 1:21:52. The following week she added another overall win at the South Fairfax Chamber Challenge 10K in 37:30. The next week she finished her season with a near perfect runner-up at the Perfect 10 Mile in 1:04:26. It would not be enough to return her to the top of the division.

Last year Peggy Yetman waited until the Army 10 Miler to snatch away the crown. This year she slowed a tad winning there in 60:01 to regain her title. This year she went right out the first day of the period winning the Chick Fil-A 5K in 17:43 to take the lead she would never lose. Her third race was a 37:31 at the Run for the Parks 10K

Third place Samantha Cole won the Clarendon 10K in 39:12 and bested fifth place Lisa Chilcote at the Veterans Day 10K 39:23 to 40:02. Mijiko Phelps was next at the Run for the Parks 10K in 39:35 ahead of seventh place Kim Isler’s 40:17 to earn fourth place. That was enough to overcome a photo finish loss to sixth place Azar Afsaneh’s Army. Both ran an identical 1:07:06. Isler was close behind in 1:07:27. Ninth place Lori Gleichenhaus is right there in the mix, racing home in 1:07:38. Two strong races by Dolores Ware, including an Old Dominion University 5K in 19:31 moved her up to eighth place.

Twenty-nine runners made the division.

Army 10 Miler 61:56, 10K = 37:13

Kris Barner, 46, ran her second 5 miler of the weekend at Navy to make her first appearance in the rankings.

This division took over the lead with 54 qualified finishers. None were able to close on the crown of Alisa Harvey. She is still accustomed to overall wins and two of her six division leading races were just that. Always known for world class middle distance speed, she won the Heritage 5K in 18:27. That was a week after she had returned to her most popular winning field at the Army 10 miler. Her 61:56 was even faster than last year. Both times earned her the division crown.

Pamela Lovett, 49, has been known to win a few times as well, finishing the season with gold at the Norfolk Wounded Warriors 5K in 19:50. The week before she was top master at the Taste of Town Center 5K in 19:31 to take the runner-up spot. Both she and third place Linda Foley will be battling soon as grandmasters.

Foley started the period at the Chick Fil-A 5Kin 19:48 and never ran after the following week of finishing the South Fairfax Chamber Challenge 10K in 41:17. Connie Glueck had three 5Ks, all finishing in the top three overall. Her best at the Crapolfest 5K in 19:49 has her just behind Foley.

Last fall’s runner-up Robyn Humphrey had a solid Army 10 Miler in 1:09:01 to take fifth place away from Velda Balmer. Balmer had won it all at the Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial 5K in 20:02. Indeed, the next two were very close with an overall win each themselves. Donna Wecker won the NCR Trail Half Marathon in 1:32:53, while Ruth Olson won the Baron "Deuce" Braswell 5K in 20:11.

Boo! Run for Life 10K 40:09

Leisa Villani had a state record last fall at the Blue Moon Wicked 10K for her only race. This year she was well off that pace, three minutes slower but she added a second overall at the Norfolk Freedom Half Marathon in 1:32:33 to qualify. It was not quite enough to just edge Win Persina for third place in the division. Persina had seven wins never finishing worse than third, including four second place and two overall wins. Her best race was the GTSI Charity Run 5K in 20:09.

Runner-up Pat Wilkerson tried out the racer friendly Great Allegany 15K with a very nice 1:02:28. With more than a 600 foot descent, this event usually leaves runners feeling invincible. She also added a trio of 5Ks, topped by the final weekend HCS Metric 5K in 20:06.

For top honors, Cindy Conant made it look easy. Even her slowish 5Ks were successful as she was the overall winner at the Petrucelli 5K in 20:37. She had started the period with an excellent Parks HM in 1:31:18. Then she dominated her hometown Kensington 8K, winning it all in 31:59. Finally in West Potomac Park she finished the Boo! Run for Life 10K in second overall with 40:09.

Even with a few of the top runners absent this period 46 racers qualified for the division. Jill Hargis continues her resurgence since becoming a grandmaster. Just like the old days, she finished top woman overall; this time at the Run 4 Shelter 10K in 43:01 to take the fifth spot. Sixth place Eleanor Kerr went long with the Marine Corps Marathon and a solid Woodrow Wilson Bridge HM in 1:35:45. Seventh place Sushila Nanda ran about 2/3 as many miles with her eight age group wins. Her best race was the Chick Fil-A 5K in 21:02.

Army 10 Mile 1:12:42, 10K = 43:41

Here at the Run! Geek! Run! Ida Draim, 55, takes the fifth position with a second 5 miler.

Betty Blank made a statement taking back her crown with a ferocious yank. Last period’s champion Alison Suckling offered up a sacrificial lamb Run 4 Shelter 10K in 45:53. That would not get it done. Blank capped September with two swift 5Ks just over 21 minutes and everyone was trailing by at least a minute.

October begin with Linda Schulman’s bid to pass Suckling, the Star City WDF 5K in 21:56. Meanwhile Blank, who loves the big races, laid down the law at the Army 10 miler in 1:12:41 to pull further away. Donna Lewis pushed past Schumann at the Eco 5K in 21:52 for third place. She was a week too late and five seconds slow to hold off Suckling for the runner-up spot.

Blank ended her season winning the Veterans Day 10K in 44:59 for the four top races in the divisions. Ida Draim ran two fast 8Ks to take the fifth spot and leave the others glancing over their shoulders.

Thirty-one runners made the division.

Run! Geek! Run! 8K 35:45, 10K = 45:23

Summer’s champion Marge Rosasco continued to pepper the region with fast 5K wins including three faster than 23:00. Her Run for the Green 5K in 22:36 was a second overall finish. One of her little races, the Heather Hurd, she was the overall winner. Still even faster than last fall and the summer she would be no match for the returning fall champion Naomi Stanford. Every division has one runner who all the others fear.

Stanford opened the season with a blistering Run! Geek! Run! 8K in 35:45 that effectively ended everyone else’s chances. One month later she glided easily to win another exclamation race the Boo! Run for Life 10K in 46:37.

Barbara Mathewson is back and she started up with a solid second master performance at the Neptune Festival 8K in 38:17. Then in November she doubled her distance and was top master, winning the Yorktown Battlefield 10 miler in 1:19:36. Rosasco will be hearing footsteps.

Fifth place Linda Mills was second at Army in 1:22:24, while fourth place Maria Shields took her spot with asolid 5K. Former champion Alice Franks is on her way back with a credible effort at the Veterans Day 10K in 49:42.

Twenty-nine runners made the division.

Run 4 Shelter 10K 49:49

Even with two of its stars moving on the division expanded 150% to 24 qualifiers. Dee Nelson had rebounded from last fall when she fell to her lowest ever position -- third, to take the division in the summer. As usual she had a slew of races. In October she set the tone with a 24:45 win at the Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K.

The following day Elizabeth Glover made a mess of that winning at the Army 10 Miler in 1:25:51 but would be moot as Suzanne Gibson had tripped through Virginia Beach a t the Neptune Festival 5K in 24:06 for the second fastest 5K in the division this year. It would earn her the crown backed up by a solid 53:00 at the Blue Moon Wicked 10K later in the month.

Joanne Murphy would finish the Veterans Day 10K in an age group winning 52:50 to take fourth place in the division. Glover ran a number of longer races and by November was a little out of gas winning the Rockville 5K in 28:35. Nelson held on to the runner-up spot with a win over sixth place Gretchen Bolton at the Rockville 10K 51:30 to 54:54. Linda Tice squeezed into fifth winning the NCR Trail HM in 1:59:55.

HCA Virginia 8K 41:16, 10K = 52:23

With Tam Graf aging up, Ecris Williams looked good for the title with a nice 29:26 5K that was faster than Graf had been running. Then Joan Coven left her battles with Dee Nelson behind and swamped the division on her first try. First she demolished the state record at the Crapolfest 5K in October with 25:42. She would drop it down to 25:17 in November but even that was not as good as her HCA Virginia 8K in 41:16 to take the crown. Williams had added a very nice Run for the Parks 10K in 59:04 and she needed it to remain the runner-up as Mary Kate Berglund dove into the new division with a spiffy 47:42 at HCA.

Tam Graf is still racing sixty races a year. She has lowered the Virginia State Record for the 5K three times since turning 75 in July.  Ann Manciagli used to walk in her events and still gets age group wins. Now she is running more often and will most likely get faster.
