2011 Rotary Resolution 4K startThis New Years Day, why not challenge yourself and do something different. Kick off the New Year by running in the Rotary Club of Leesburg’s 15th annual REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K race & 4K fun run. This is definitely not your ordinary race through flat neighborhood or city streets. Its well-marked, certified course is largely off-road, and runners are far more likely to encounter a family of deer than a car. The challenging circular course starts and finishes at the top of a grass-covered field in Leesburg’s Ida Lee Park and only hits the blacktop for a couple of short stretches. Most of the course runs through the lovely rolling hills of the 1000 acre Morven Park Estate and Equestrian Center. The views are breathtaking.

The well organized REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K & 4K is also known for its creature comforts. There is plenty of free and convenient parking. You can stay warm and stretch in the Ida Lee Recreation Center gym before the race or do a hilarious outdoor pre-race warm-up with Ida Lee personal trainer, Lynne Stevenson. In addition to the usual cluster of portable restrooms at the starting line, participants can use the bathrooms, coin-operated lockers,  changing rooms, and showers in the Ida Lee Recreation Center. Afterwards participants, friends, and family gather in the gym again to enjoy wonderful food and drinks, the live music of popular singer/songwriter Dave Berry, an awards ceremony, and the chance of winning random prizes.

An added benefit is that you will feel good knowing that you are helping others, as all race proceeds go to local charities. The Rotary Club of Leesburg started the race in 1998 as a fundraiser to support the local community. To date the race has raised more than $211,000 to benefit local charities. This year’s designated charities are ARC of Loudoun, Blue Ridge Hospice, Capital Hospice (Capital Caring), ECHO, Interfaith Relief, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Loudoun Free Clinic, Loudoun Literacy Council, Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research, and the Rotary Club of Leesburg’s Perry Winston Scholarship Fund.

So. . . if your top priority is to set a personal best time, you might want to find another race. If, on the other hand, you would like to start the New Year with a challenging, memorable race surrounded by the beauty of nature, then the REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K is the race for you.
