Eight years in the making and the determination remains as a living tribute to a local community runner, Tim Kennard who made his last run on March 11, 2004 shortly after the first event at the age of 48. Kennard was unable to participate in the first event after he lost his battle against renal cell cancer, a disease which attacks the kidneys.  Kennard’s friends Linda Mills and Harlan Eagle started the Tim Kennard River Run/Walk in his honor. The first four years (2004-2007) the event was a 5-miler and in 2008 the event was changed to a 10-miler and 5K format.

Comcast presents the 9th Tim Kennard 10 Mile River Run & 5K which will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2012 with the start and finish at Maggs Physical Activity Center on the campus of Salisbury University (SU) in Salisbury, Maryland. The events will start at 8:30 a.m. Salisbury’s location at the head of the Wicomico River was a major factor in its becoming one of Maryland's outstanding cities located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“The support and positive energy that surrounds this race is amazing. My brother would be awe-struck to know what this group of people (Linda Mills, Harlan Eagle, and Ken Gaudreau) has accomplished in his honor and that his name is now synonymous with the best race in Salisbury and on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. My brother was an average guy, funny and thoughtful. He was not a competitive runner, he started running because he moved to Salisbury and Linda Mills was his neighbor. A life long smoker he gave it up in his late 30s to start a healthier lifestyle. It was through Linda, Ken, and Harlan’s incredible positive energy and patience that he was able to join their running group,” stated Dodie Chiamulera, sister of Tim Kennard.

This run/walk is in his honor with proceeds going, as Tim requested, to help children and animals. This year the proceeds will help Coastal Hospice specifically for pediatric cases and programs for grieving children who have lost a sibling or a parent to cancer. The Salisbury Horizons Student Enrichment Program, which provides support, education, and hope to children from economically disadvantaged families and our local four-legged friends in need will also be beneficiaries of the proceeds.

The top runners will be going after $1,400 in prize money. There is equal money for males and females in the 5K and 10-miler:

5K-Open $150-100-50, Master $50    10 Miler Open $150-100-50 Master $50 (age 40-59). There will be $50 for the first male and female age 60 and over. There will be no duplication of awards.

“I ran it last year and my friends have competed since 2008. Some of my running buddies (Jaron Hawkins, Jeremy Rice, David Mertz and Woody Snoberger) from the Hagerstown-based Cumberland Valley Athletic Club have had success in this race for several years. Jaron currently holds the course record, too. To improve, maybe I’ll train a little bit more beforehand!” stated Daniel DeWitt the 2011 winner (56:03) and the 2010 winner (53:56).

“I struggled with injuries quite a bit last year and worried that the aging process was really making me slow down, but I'm running better than I have in a while, so I've learned that father time hasn't caught me yet I just need to train a little different. As a master’s runner, I don't want to leave a race to a kick. I feel like I need more recovery time. I don't bounce back from a race or work out like I use to. So I might taper more for some races. The biggest obstacles when training at high intensities is avoiding injuries, time constraints, and finding people to train with though right now I have a great group to train with. I like the course, timing, and location of the Tim Kennard 10 mile, defending my title, honoring a fallen runner, and that it is a charity event,” stated Denise Knickman the 2011 winner and first master (1:03:09). Knickman was the defending 2010 winner (1:06:17).

“I was attracted to the event because it was for such a good cause. It is always nice to know that your entry fee will be benefitting various charities. In addition, Charm City Run does a great job putting on various events around the Baltimore area, and I knew the Tim Kennard 5K would be no exception. There was a great post-race party and the awards were done in a timely manner,” stated Sherry Stick, 2011 5K winner (18:40).
