The students at Mount Vernon Community School in Alexandria are in for a big surprise when the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) along with Miles the bulldog presents the Healthy School Award on Thursday, January 19. This is the first year Mount Vernon will receive the award recognizing the students’ participation in the Healthy Kids Fun Run held in Arlington, VA on October 29 during MCM Weekend. The school registered 115 students who participated in the one-mile fun run held in the Pentagon North parking lot.

Two school assemblies will be held so that all of the students can attend the award presentation starting at 12:50 in the school gym and at 1:50 p.m. in the school auditorium. The Mount Vernon Community School is located at 2601 Commonwealth Avenue in Alexandria.

During the program, MCM partner Sodexo will present a check for $1,000 to Mount Vernon’s P.E. department and will provide healthy snacks to every student. Additionally, the National Children’s Museum’s ‘Museum without Walls’ team will present programming focusing on physical fitness and activity. U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Base Quantico and the MCM mascot, Miles, will join MCM Director Rick Nealis in demonstrating ways to keep fit.

This is the first of five Healthy School Award presentations that will be made by the MCM in January and February at five separate schools located in Alexandria and in Springfield, VA. The five schools each receive the Healthy School Award and the monetary boost to their P.E. programs for having the most student participation in the Healthy Kids Fun Run. Students ages 5 to 12 can participate in the one-mile run for fun.

The 2012 Healthy Kids Fun Run will open for online registration at noon Eastern on April 4 at www.marinemarathon.com. Parents can register kids for the event that will be held on Saturday, October 27. Schools or organizations interested in registering groups of students can contact Amy Beaulieu, MCM communications coordinator at amy.beaulieu@usmc.mil or 703-784-2357.
