For nearly twenty years, the RRCA has been supporting the Maryland Championship Series. The series consists of eleven races from RRCA clubs in Maryland (including, as well, the DC Roadrunners). Each club has a home event and throughout the year clubs send their runners out to challenge for the top spot. The event gets underway every year on the last Sunday in February when the Howard County Striders host the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in Columbia. The teams are scored cross country style, (men, women, and coed) with the fastest runner getting the low score. Team mates can help by displacing other teams’ runners. For example, if the men’s team scores the top 20 finishers, the 21st runner of a given team will not score but he raises the score of any other team’s top 20 finishers that he beats.  After each race the numbers are tallied and accumulate throughout the year to decide the top team.

Individuals can earn awards as well. The fastest runners in the overall as well as in five year age groups get 1000 points. Other runners are accessed points based on the percentage of time, not by place. The top four races for each individual count toward their final tally. Awards are given to the top three overall as well as two deep in all the age groups.  The awards are presented in Columbia at the start of the next year’s series.
