Look For Signs of Spring at the 20th Van Metre 5 Mile Run for Children's National Medical Center on March 10

The 20th Annual Van Metre 5 Mile Run for Children's National Medical Center will take place on Saturday, March 10, 2012 beginning bright and early at 8:30 a.m. at The Broadlands Marketplace in Ashburn, Virginia.

The Van Metre Companies are happy to announce that the race route has been USATF certified this year. The company is hoping the certification of the race route will draw many more runners to the event this year.

Hundreds of participants from all age and skill levels will come together to enjoy fitness and fun, all for a great cause. The event includes a Kids Run for Fun and the One-Mile Fun Run/Walk, to accompany the 5 Mile Run. The Van Metre Companies host a post-race celebration for all participants including refreshments, awards, and door prizes.

The 5 Mile Run starts at 8:30 a.m. The Kids Run for Fun starts at 8:35 a.m. Participants include serious runners, weekend and occasional joggers, walkers, and even strollers (for the 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk only) of all skill levels.

The overall first place finisher will be presented with the ‘Al Van Metre – Ready, Set, Go’ trophy.  Cash prizes will be presented to the first, second, and third place overall male and female runners. Additional prizes will be presented to the top two male and female runners in the following age groups which have been broken down into smaller groups this year for the first time: 19 and younger, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and older.  Also, every child 12 years of age and younger who finishes the Kids Run for Fun receives a commemorative gift.

Registration fees to participate will be $25/adult ($30 after March 15) and $5/child 12 & younger. Pre-registration is available online. Late registration and race packets for registrants will take place on Thursday, March 8 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ashburn Potomac River Running store and Friday, March 9 at the Broadlands Market Place, Wyndridge Drive, Ashburn, outside the Glory Days from noon to 5:00 p.m.

In an area tradition that extends over each of the past 19 years, the Van Metre Companies have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Children's National Medical Center through their sponsorship of the 5 Mile Run For Children's National Medical Center.  At the first race in 1992, Van Metre raised $6,000. Last year, $65,000 was raised. Held at Broadlands, the best-selling Loudoun County planned community just off the Dulles Greenway in Ashburn, Virginia, this event draws hundreds of Van Metre business associates and members of the community and general public who wish to combine a day of fitness, fun, and camaraderie in support of one of the very best causes in the nation's capital region.
