Men Division 2008

Open Men

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 29:05

Will Christian of Norfolk, VA can run the Half. He won his hometown Fleet Week in 1:07:25. In April, he improved on his Shamrock HM of 1:06:19 with a nifty 1:05:33 at the Dismal Swamp Stomp HM for the second fastest time in the division; even better than Ezkyas Sisay's National HM win in late March with 1:06:17. All that earned him runner-up as Sisay snatched the crown racing 1:04:38 at the Shamrock.

The second half of the year Steven Crane had been battling Abiyot Abebe for the crown, each winning once. Crane had his best race of the year at the always-competitive Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 49:41. Abebe put away the discussion for now late in the year besting Crane at the Veterans Day 10K 30:04 to 30:31. Crane led all runners with an impressive 18 overall wins. Abebe added a Charlottesville 10K in 30:18 while Crane added a Van Metre triumph in 24:12. At Kentlands, Abebe again took the measure of Crane, winning 14:39 to 14:42.

Former rankings champion Wilson Komen was the top qualifier at DARCARS Pike's Peek in 30:18 for fifth place. Robert Wade outdueled Nate Brigham at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 50:53 to 51:02 for the sixth spot. Brigham added a swift 30:55 at DARCARS Pike's Peek to hold off Dave Berdan, who won Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 14:44. Berdan's second effort was third place at the Germantown 5-Miler in 24:51 behind the sparring Crane (24:34) and Abebe (24:45).

Still a teenager, Ezkyas Sisay took the top spot in the rankings with his Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:04:38.

Just behind the eight ball is ninth place mega-racer Michael Wardian. Wardian had record setting success at races longer than we count. However, he had no problem adding a sterling second overall at the Shamrock Marathon in 2:24:55. That was just weeks after a third overall at the challenging Colonial HM in 1:08:34. The Shamrock tired him just enough to slow him down five whole seconds as he won the National Marathon in 2:25:00 to end March.

Tim Young won the other late August 10 Mile, not Annapolis, the Hartwood Wawa, in 51:44. Jaron Hawkins came close again at Marine Corps in 2:25:19. Young bolstered his try for tenth with a Civitan 10K in 31:13. Hawkins gets the lean in the always hard to qualify Great Allegany 15K. This runaway truck course features 600 plus feet in net drop. Hawkins Molotoved the field in a brilliant 46:58. Everyone has fast times there but the really elite runners do not seem to get as much of an advantage.

Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:04:38, 10K = 29:20

Ezkyas Sisay promises not to be a teenager for much longer. His dominance is unprecedented, with all of his 13 races better than any other runner in the division. Included in his triumphs were seven overall wins. He ran five half marathons. His best time of the year was at the Shamrock HM in 1:04:38, where an elite field pushed him back to his worse placing, sixth overall. Some might say his overall wins at National in 1:06:17 afterwards in March or better yet at the hilly Colonial in 1:06:24 would be more impressive. Note that he hosed the field at St. Patrick's, the second biggest 8K, in 24:39. Then he warmed up for his top half marathon by finishing fifth overall at the world class Shamrock 8K, the day before, in a scintillating 24:12.

After that, there were a lot of swift young men racing 16 minute 5Ks battling for the runner-up spot. Andrew Rigler drew first blood with his Gifts for Gulu in 16:03 for an overall win. Justin Kendall trapped one of his nine age groups wins at the Run for the Future 5K in 16:21. Ten days later, at the competitive Pam Edwards 5K, Christopher Werner stole the third spot with his 16:12 placing.

35-39 Men

nTelos 8K, 23:29, 10K = 29:47

Traditionally the smallest division with elite division racers, this division was decided at DARCARS Pike's Peek between a young whippersnapper and two top runners soon to be 40. The top 12 times were all Philippe Rolly or Ray Pugsley, save for Michael Colaiacovo's third place submaster at the Pike in 33:02. Rolly broke the tape first in 31:43 to win the crown. Note that Pugsley's 31:53 ten seconds later was faster than any master has run there since Brian Daugherty's 31:16 in 2000.

Rolly also prevailed at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 25:46 where he had often won it all when the race was a 10K. In May he met Puglsey for a rematch, winning the entire race at the Casacades Fire Chase in 32:49. Pugsley had his fifth fastest effort of the year there to finish second overall in 33:02. Colaiacovo cemented his third position winning at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 55:21.

Ray Pugsley turned forty in February and is now the number one masters threat. In 2008 he was ranked number two in the submasters division.

Eric Makovsky knifed in ahead of Noah Zaring, also of Washington, DC, winning the Navy Air Force 10K outright in 33:22. Zaring was ahead of Pekka Stenholm at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 55:41 to 57:47. After that rough ride, Stenholm was smooth at DARCARS Pike's Peek in 33:22 and to add to his 34:17 at Jingle All the Way to break the deadlock for fourth place.

Dismal Swamp Stomp HM, 1:11:40, 10K = 32:31

Last year's champion, Doug Mock, barely came out to play, racing a training run 57:28 at the RRCA Challenge. Tim Schuler of Chambersburg, PA was gearing up for the new division (45-49) and did a lot of his damage there. Before leaving he took on the largest 8K in the region, winning at the Shamrock 8K in 27:37. While a solid time, there would be 30 faster times in the division.

Schuler returned to DARCARS Pike's Peek where he had won it all back in 1997 with 30:22. He uncorked an excellent 33:11 against a brilliant masters field to take the crown. Last year it was Mock at the Pike to deny Andres Wright. This year Wright was third master in 33:35.

Last winter Wright ran a superb Celtic Solstice in 26:20. Then he packed in an excellent Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 55:53. While Schuler was dueling in the elder division in the fall, Wright ran the fastest 5K of the year in 15:58, making a substantial case for the crown.

Christopher Hamley went long. First he took on the East Beach HM in 1:13:49 passing John Piggott's 1:15:31. As usual, Piggott retuned to run six more halves but even his fastest at Richmond (1:13:58) fell short. In March, Hamley outdid Piggott at his own game, racing seven marathons to four. He won the difficult GW Birthday Marathon in February in 2:42:15. The following month he was second overall at the Piney Point race in 2:46:46, while multiple year winner Piggott was way off his game in 2:47:51 after winning in 2007 in 2:33:05. The meltdown continued at the National Marathon where Piggott was two miles behind his previous time, finishing in 2:42:22. Hamley prevailed in 2:35:46.

Ian Clements (44) is on the cusp of the new division. In 2008 he made a bold statement at the Veterans Day 10K in 35:59.

Mark Gilmore had three swift 5Ks in the top 30 times, including the PVI Runfest in 16:15 for the next spot. Peter Keating held the only other top-30 time, finishing Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 57:04.

Apple Blossom 10K, 33:10

Greg Cauller of York, PA had a powerful spring, winning a huge 5K, topping the division at the Shamrock 8K, and finishing second masters at the kingmaker DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K in an impressive 33:20. Note that another Pennsylvanian, Tim Schuler, was tops there in 33:11 just a month before turning 45. Last year's champion, Dai Roberts, had three powerful half marathons but did not race enough to qualify.

This year's champion, Mark Stickley, eschewed the Pike this year, winning at five other 10Ks. The season began humbly with a 34:17 win at Jingle All the Way. Then he ran the largest in the region at Ukrop's in 33:18. In May he paraded in front of his hometown fans at the Apple Blossom 10K in 33:10. In June he ratcheted a powerful argument at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 33:51. In November he took the fall's best Veterans Day 10K in 33:21. A week later he took down the third largest 8K in the region at nTelos in 26:26. At the fourth largest 8K in Rockville, he scorched the field with 26:50, nudging back his time at the second largest 8K, St. Patrick's Day, in 26:51.

James Coombes of Norfolk, VA appeared out of nowhere, winning nearly all his races with a slew of 5Ks in the low 16:00s. His only stumble was finishing behind Cauller at the Shamrock with his 28:13, his 11th fastest race. Dave Berardi of Catonsville, MD picked up the slack there, finishing in 27:34. Coombes earns the third spot with his fall Wounded Marine 5K in 16:07. Berardi leads the next three runners at DARCARS Pike's Peek for his best race in 34:11. David Cascio is right on his heels with 34:13, with David Haaga coming up fast in 34:31. Jean-Christophe Arcaz takes the final spot with 34:52. Cascio was golden at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile (57:59), nipping Arcaz with 58:09, while Haaga ran the National Marathon in 2:42:39.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 34:01

Stephen Chantry took charge and started the year with two swift 5Ks just short of 17:00. This year the contingency from the Tidewater region did not show up at DARCARS Pike's Peek where they earned the top spots last year. Mark Malander of Oak Hill, VA aged up and took the battle to them. At the Shamrock 8K in March he blitzed last year's champion, Stephen Chantry, 27:32 to 28:03. The very next day at the Shamrock HM he manhandled runner-up Maurice Pointer 1:18:49 to 1:19:35.

Next, Malander bounced Pointer off the podium at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 57:48 to 59:32. Then he capped the spring, taking DARCARS Pike's Peek home in 34:01. Pointer was relentless all year long, bringing home 30 titles. To begin August, he became the only one to break 17:00 for the 5K with 16:59. Then he capped the month with a nice 35:11 10K at the Potomac Valley Games. Third place Steve Anderson won the 5K there in 17:42. Anderson ran Army in a swift 58:21 to catch Malander (59:11). Then he pumped the fastest marathon at Marine Corps in 2:46:49, again ahead of Malander (2:55:09). Quantity with his quality puts Pointer just ahead of Anderson.

Gustavo Olmedo of McLean, VA had a solid 63:16 at the always competitive Army 10 Mile to move up in the division.

Chantry gets fourth. James Bates had 24 wins while Pete Gibson had ten. Gibson had the fastest time with his Run for Independence 5K in 17:11. Bates was right behind him with his Queen's Lake 5K in 17:14. Both runners had a bunch of races in the low 36:00 10K equivalent. Both matched up well with Chantry. Bates beat Gibson in the 5K once but lost two long races, giving Gibson the higher spot by a smidgeon. Dan Lawson had three fast 5Ks, including the swift PVI Runfest in 17:16 to get in the seventh spot. There is no way to handicap these three runners.

Army 10 Miler, 58:23, 10K = 35:13

Chuck Moeser had four of the five fastest times and two others ran Army faster than Alan Pemberton's 1:02:30 at Credit Union Cherry Blossom, but you have to play to win. Rick Platt stayed close with his Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:23:07. They matched 10Ks: Platt at Toys for Tots in 37:56 to start the period and Pemberton raced Veterans Day in 37:58 to end the period. Third place Tom Ruckert of Grantsville, MD matched Pemberton's best 5K exactly at 18:14 at the Turkey Trot. That helped validate his superior time of 57:56 at the race friendly Great Allegany 15K. Pemberton broke the logjam, winning the Leesburg 20K in a record setting 1:17:44 and taking the top spot in the division.

Roland Rust of Bethesda, MD is never far from the awards stand, racing Pike's Peek in 39:05.

The next four spots were tight. Richard Adams gets the nod, racing 38:11 at Veterans Day as did Ken Umbarger at DARCARS Pike's Peek. Timothy Morgan was right there with a 38:23 at DARCARS Pike's Peek. Last winter Dan Eddy upset Pemberton (38:54) and Adams (39:13) with a nice 38:51 at the Jingle All the Way 10K. Morgan ran the Leesburg 10K in 38:56 ahead of Adams's 39:15 to take sixth place. Adams won the Goblin Gallop in 18:42; Umbarger won the Germantown 5 Miler in 31:14.

60-64 Men

Leesburg 10K, 39:16

Always huge, the 60-64 division dropped to fifth largest with 43 runners. The days of a clear-cut winner are passing. Each of the top four runners won a period. To start the year, John Kirkpatrick motivated at the AS Anniversary 15K in 1:02:04 and the Valentine's 5K in 19:38. While Bill Joyce outgunned Ronnie Wong at the RRCA Challenge, Jason Page managed a doable 42:04 10K.

In the spring, Page dipped below 40 for the 10K where Kirkpatrick and Wong could not follow. He just bested Joyce's half marathon. In the fall, Wong won the division with a 19:12 Police Pace 5K but probably would not have had the late results from the On Eagles Wing 10K arrived. Page ran 40:06 there versus the 10K equivalent of 40:03 of Wong's 5K, but had four other races faster than Wong's second best.

Wong, with 39 age group wins, earns third with Kirkpatrick fourth. Now, the summer would decide the champion. Page started the period with his specialty, a fast 5K in 18:15. Joyce responded with a Lawyers Have Heart in 39:23. Now it would come down to the Leesburg 10K match-up. Both runners fought the entire way. Joyce maintained an early lead to prevent a Page sprint finish. Joyce won 39:16 to 39:35 to earn the crown.

Sixth place Jim Noone edged fifth place Bernard Wright by four seconds at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:08:25. But Wright had two faster 10 milers, Chestertown (1:07:53) and Army (1:08:12), to go with his DARCARS Pike's Peek win in 41:08.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 41:15

Of last year's top three racers, John Elliott prepares to age up and did not race enough to qualify but would have finished fourth. Both Jim Becker and Lou Shapiro got faster, with Shapiro winning three periods. Becker clearly had the 5K speed, racing six times faster than Shapiro's only time faster than 21:00, Capital Crescent in 20:51. Still, his 1:35:42 at the hilly Dave Herlocker HM was well ahead of Shapiro's fast route at the muggy Parks HM in 1:38:37.

Shapiro takes the crown with eight of the top ten times. Bobby Spencer had the tenth best time racing the Commonwealth Games 5K in 20:32. Becker was one second slower in his second race, the Jack Barr Memorial, to confirm his spot. Shapiro took on the mild rain at Cherry Blossom for an excellent 1:09:24. Then, de rigueur, he raced DARCARS Pike's Peek in 41:15. In October, he played novice, racing the Great Allegany 15K. He was warned to race with that 41:15 as a fair split estimate. The all-downhill course does not punish fast starts. Old habits die hard, and Shapiro ran his normal stronger as the race goes on to finish in 1:05:06.

Sonny Barber of Falls Church, VA races with the big dogs in the division. He won the Leesburg 10K this summer in 44:29.

Fifth place Joe Clorety had a marvelous 1:06:33 AS Anniversary 15K and then was bested the next three periods by fourth place Skip Mullaney. Mullaney had run a 1:07:34 at the Frostbite 15K. After that, he continued to have faster and faster times. His best race was the Charlottesville HM in 1:35:57 as well as four others faster than Clorety's second race, a 21:09 5K. Mullaney had five more times ahead of Clorety's third race. Sonny Barber earns sixth place at DARCARS Pike's Peek with 43:48.

70-74 Men

Fleet Week HM, 1:41:27, 10K = 46:02

This division is a really tough egg to crack. The top two racers each won the division twice. They only met once, with Lougee winning the home region Shamrock 8K 37:15 to 37:36. Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA won a prolific 29 times. Duane Lougee ran fewer than half as many races though he probably raced more miles. Robbins, only once, in a 12K, ran farther than a 10K. Lougee only ran a couple of 5Ks. Robbins had by far the best 5K, racing 22:18 in October. Lougee bested that at the TS Tune-up 25K in 2:02:33 to start the year. He also had the fourth best time at the TS Tune-up 30K in 2:30:43. He won the division when he came north to take Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:16:29.

Third place Skip Grant of Silver Spring, MD is another short distance speedster. He surprised Robbins, winning at DARCARS Pike's Peek 46:58 to 47:16. After that, Robbins mastered Grant. He ran two five milers faster than Lougee's best and two more 10Ks faster than Grant. Grant added a top race, winning the Rockville 5K in 22:37 to secure third place.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 1:25:11, 10K = 51:15

The top 48 times belonged to the top three racers. They won their division at virtually all their races. Larry Dickerson of Burke, VA is making a comeback again, racing the GW Parkway Classic 5K in 26:12. That same day, Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD was racing down the Pike in 51:50.

The day before at the Port to Fort 6K George Yannakakis of Sparks, MD had run 30:15, which is slower by just three seconds. He also had five other races, including the Ashland 10K in 52:37, ahead of McMahon's second race, the GW Birthday 10K in 53:03. The title smoke cleared at Credit Union Cherry Blossom when Yannakakis won in 1:25:11.

Edward Green (77) of Washington, DC loves to race. He won 12 of his 29 races in 2008.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 56:14

Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, MD had total command of the division. All eight of his races topped everyone else. His only race not to win was Army where the divisions ended at 70 and over. At Credit Union Cherry Blossom he ran nearly ten minutes faster in 1:33:59. He even bested the legendary Lou Lodovico. Lodovico, who ran 1:34:26, is one of six runners who have run "under their age" for ten miles. Xie topped that at DARCARS Pike's Peek with 56:14. Even last year's champion, John Hosner, could not top Xie's 5K at Kentlands in 27:13.

Wendell Golden stayed just ahead of fellow Charlottesville racer Harry Freestone. Ageless Walt Washburn (86) moved up four places to fourth. Runners 80 and older ran 137 races.

Ron,

Read the introductory article that leads into the men's and women's divisions in the rankings. The asterisks indicate the number of age group wins each runner had during the ranking period. In this case, the period is a full year.
