Open Women
Baltimore Half Marathon, 1:13:14, 10K = 33:06

Carrie Conley (34) of Gainesville, VA burst across the line at the Veterans Day 10K in 38:28 for tenth overall, just missing the top half of the monster 62-women Elite Division by a spot in 32nd place.

Last year Belainesh Gebre of Washington, DC was both the teen and the Open champion. This year, at age 20, only one crown was available to her. She earned it again racing the Baltimore HM, improving her time by more than a minute to 1:13:14. Then in an amazing weekend she traveled to Piney Point, MD the very next day to win the Lower Potomac 10M in a world-class 56:33. After that she was gone for the period. The next three runners vied for the runner-up spot.

Early in the period, all three met up at the swift PVI Runfest 5K. Alemgena Desta of Silver Spring, MD won this second of her four races in 16:16 ahead of Hirut Mandefro and Samia Akbar of Oak Hill, VA. Akbar nudged Mandefro 16:30 to 16:34 and also won the Run for Awareness 8K in 28:06. Still, Mandefro had too much other juice and earns third place with a Veterans Day 10K win over Desta 34:32 to 34:37 as well as a top time at the Star Kid 8K in 27:54. She also won the Charlottesville Fall Classic 10K in 35:24. Desta's other three 5K wins were tactical wins in the low 17s. Mandefro did finish second overall at the United Way 5K in a scrumptious time but the course was not quite long enough for a real 5K.

Not to say that fifth place Phebe Ko does not belong in the mix. She was a ways back at the PVI Runfest in 17:14 but finished nicely at the Baltimore HM in October with 1:18:10. She ended the period with a third overall at the SunTrust Richmond Marathon in a spectacular 2:46:57.

Cate Fenster (37) of Bethesda, MD won it all at the Marine Corps Marathon in 2:48:55 ahead of Melissa Tanner's third place effort in 2:51:30 and Lauren Manero's 3:00:51, to go six, seven, and eight. In their second races that got them their spot, Tanner just edges Manero at Army by one second in 59:52. Ninth place Renee High dominated in southern Virginia with two overall wins, including a 1:19:49 at the Fleet Week HM. Not all halves are equal; Elena Orlova took the tenth spot with her 1:20:01 at the Baltimore HM.

Sixty-three runners made the division.

19 & Under Women
Galax Autumn Days 5K, 18:23, 10K = 38:16

Most of the teens must have been back at school and off the roads, perhaps racing cross-country. Indeed, our champion had her second race in the middle of November at the Access Aidscare 5K Cross Country in 21:48 to qualify. She had the swiftest race at the Hilton 5K in October with 19:03 to take the division.

Brittany Rooks is always a factor in the division. She is well trained in every distance from 400M to the marathon. She raced lightly though she won both of her races outright. She earns the runner-up spot winning the Rockville 5K in 19:40. Kathyrn Goode of Landsdowne, VA also had two overall wins to capture the third spot. She won the Dash for Dad 10K in 41:56, easily the fastest 10K among qualifiers and the second fastest of the period among all the teens.

Fourth place Christine Hubbard of Virginia Beach, VA won four of her five races at the 5K distance. Her best two were overall wins at both ends of the period, led by the Wounded Marine 5K in 20:40. Appropriately, at just 14 years of age, fifth place Nicole Durham had her best time at the Young Lives 5K, finishing second there in 20:32.

35-39 Women
Marine Corps Marathon, 2:48:55, 10K = 36:07

Mary Davison (36) of Bristow, VA had two overall wins as well as an age group win at the Veterans Day 10K in 38:43 to climb to fourth sub master.

This division is usually smaller and easy to decide. This fall the division fleshed out to the full 20 runners. The top two were razor close. Elena Orlova of Gaithersburg, MD looks golden to repeat as champion. She won her age group seven times and she won overall at three distances in three different months. First, she teased the division at the Kensington 8K, winning in 30:39. Perhaps she was a little tired from her fourth overall journey at the Parks HM in 1:24:34. She finished October with the Goblin Gallop 5K win in 18:17 following a marvelous 1:20:01 at the Baltimore HM. Then she nudged back her second overall Awareness 8K in 29:31 to fourth best time with her win of it all at the Rockville 10K in 37:16.

It was going to take a lot. Cate Fenster of Potomac, MD was tuning up for the Marine Corps Marathon. She started with an overall win at Run for Kathy in 18:05. The next day she raced Page's Run for third overall in 18:16. The following week she tucked in behind third ranked Erica Nemmers at the Stone Ridge 5K, finishing in 18:18 to Nemmers' 18:11. Now she was ready. She pulled out all the stops and won the prestigious Marine Corps Marathon in a blistering 2:48:55 to win the division.

Fourth place Mary Davison of Bristow, VA won the Designer Fitness 5K in 18:15, while fifth place Kristi Markowicz also won it all at the Battlefield 5K in 18:16. That takes their duel to the second race. Nemmers edges Davison at Veterans Day 38:22 to 37:43. Marokowicz runs the Mariner's Museum Noland Trail 10K in 39:35, an overall win.

40-44 Women
Inspire Victory 5K, 17:08, 10K = 35:40

Runners age up and new ones appear. The division gets fifty percent larger and yet it stays the same. Top-ranked Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA out battles runner-up Denise Knickman at the steamy Parks HM 1:28:02 to 1:29:05. Fifth place Rosalind Shepherd has a solid PVI Runfest 5K in 19:45. Harvey discombobulates it all with a masters win in 18:05.

In October, multiple Army winner Harvey settles for top master in 60:57 ahead of third place Samantha Kirby of Arlington, VA (64:48) as well as eighth place Kerr Rodgers (67:33), who was fourth in the division at that race. Sixth place Anita Freres of Reston, VA takes the masters at the Veterans Day 10K in 39:37 ahead of Becky Nathan's solid 40:04. Harvey is seventh overall, just missing the 6:00 minute pace mark with 37:18.

Only fourth place Danielle Rush of Ashburn, VA avoided a thrashing from Harvey. Rush won the Women of Freedom 5K in 18:49. Run enough races and Harvey will get to you.

Knickman rebounded nicely winning a cooler NCR Trail HM outright in 1:25:54. That set her up for a solid time at the Baltimore Marathon in 2:56:26 at perhaps the safest distance to test oneself against middle distance world record holder Alisa Harvey. Kirby padded her stats with an excellent 3:04:156 at the Marine Corps Marathon. Freres won it all at the Boo! Run for Life 10K in 39:39.

45-49 Women
St. Edwards Eagle Challenge 5K, 18:37, 10K = 38:46

Forty-Five year old Leslie Knibb of Washington, DC bounced back from an age group win at the Baltimore Marathon to a solid 43:50 at the Veterans Day 10K to take the 20th spot in her division.

The division stays large with 45 qualifiers. With Martha Merz absent (she ran one 5K the first weekend and then disappeared), the battle would be between Josephine Menk and Linda Foley, with former champion Andrea Wright mixed in. Foley, of Oak Hill, VA, kicked off the season winning at the PVI Runfest in 19:38 while Wright was still getting on track with a 20:12 at Maymount.

Foley laid down the hammer in October with an excellent Army 10- Miler in 65:17. She weathered a couple of nice 5Ks by Laura Shannon in the low 19s. Then Menk of Montpelier, VA motivated at the Eagle Challenge 5K in a spectacular 18:37 that would have unbalanced even Merz.

The following month Wright had a nifty 31:15 at nTelos to snatch third. Menk was there 50 meters ahead in 30:55 to match Foley's top race. Foley stays runner-up. Shannon makes fourth.

Pat Wilkerson of Columbia, MD holds fifth with her short course Baltimore United Way 5K in 19:28. The next two runners were not far off but their second race was way off while Wilkerson was the overall winner at the Police Pace 5K in 19:46.

50-54 Women
Baltimore Marathon, 3:02:18, 10K = 38:58
Yorktown Battlefield 10M, 1:04:50, 10K = 38:58

Ofelia Perotti of Alexandria, VA was motoring toward another title try. She had the fastest 5K in 20:12 to start the period. Then she popped the fastest 5M, winning Navy in 32:30. Cautiously optimistic, she won her division at Army in a solid 65:50.

The following week, Lee DiPietro took on the Baltimore Marathon as the grandmaster champion in 3:02:18. That was well ahead of the 3:18:37 Perotti would run at Marine Corps later in the month. However, DiPietro had just the one race. The following day, Leisa Villani of Virginia Beach, VA edged past Perotti with the fastest half, running the Fleet Week HM in 1:27:15. Then she matched DiPietro with her second race, the Yorktown 10M in 64:50, and took the crown.

Deborah Romig darted out of the back to third by improving her second 8K (nTelos) by nearly three minutes to 32:19. Debi Bernardes of King George, VA backed up her claim to fourth place with three fast 5Ks in September. Her fastest was in 20:22. Debbie Flynn ekes out fifth place with five age group wins, including a second overall in the Seaside 10 mile in 1:11:38. She was just ahead of Robin Goodwin and her eight wins, along with an Executive Stampede 5K in 20:40.

55-59 Women
Army 10-Miler, 1:10:30, 10K = 42:22

Suanne Shocket of Manassas, VA ran five fast races to rise to fifth in her division, including he r best race at the Designer Fitness 5K in 23:27.

Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA does not just want the title. She wants the fastest times at all the distances. She has the top time in 11 race distances. At Richmond, her marathon time of 3:37:40 missed another title by about a minute. Only the really elite win the division with a marathon time. Hers was the fourth fastest race in the division. She also had the first at Army and the second, winning the Run! Geek! Run! 8K in 34:03.

Lynn Swanson of Norfolk, VA has the goods. Still, she waited till November to qualify. First, she mastered Carter Gunn 8K. The course was not fast but she was the overall winner. Then a week later she busted the fastest 5K of the year at the Kiwanis Center in 20:47. That should keep Blank on her toes.

Roseanna Norton (55) of Virginia Beach, VA arrived on the scene with five age group wins, including the Race for Breath 5K in 22:57. She was the masters award winner at the Kiwanis Center in 23:02, where Swanson had finished third overall. Maria Shields of Davidsonville, MD waited till the last day of the period to qualify, racing the Cold Turkey 10K in 48:06 for fourth in the division.

Army 10-Miler, 1:16:07, 10K= 45:45

Fourth place Alice Franks (60) of Rockville, MD took on five major races from 8K to marathon, excelling best at the Army 10 Mile in 1:19:15.

Chris Craun of Bethesda, MD took on all the big races and went five for five, winning Army, Veterans Day 10K, Marine Corps Marathon, Rockville 10K, and the Parks HM. Fourth place Alice Franks was also at all five races. At four of those races, she was second in the division, including her best race, the Army 10-Miler in 1:19:15. In the fifth and final race, Linda Kearney of Herndon, VA stepped up at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K to pass her, 47:39 to 48:18.

For the runner-up spot, Mary Saunders of Vinton, VA tapped two half marathons at opposite ends of the period. She improved two minutes at the Richmond HM in November to 1:42:48. That time matched Craun's second fastest race at Veterans (46:27) to the second. Craun's Army in 1:16:07 did the trick.

With long races all around, fifth place B.J. King chose the 5K in 23:32 to edge sixth place Marge Rosasco's 23:38.

65-69 Women
Jimmy K 5K, 22:52, 10K = 47:37

Joan Coven of West Point, VA gave away a couple of seconds to last year's times but still commanded the title. She started the period tepidly with a 6K in 30:31. Meanwhile, Dee Nelson of Gaithersburg, MD, who has run 60 or more races per year for the last dozen years, aged up. Nelson ran the cross-country Needwood 10K in 56:32 and the battle was underway.

Coven answered with a smart 24:09 at the Humane Society 5K. Two weeks later she had the second fastest time at the William & Mary Homecoming 5K in 24:25. In between that time, Kathleen Phillips of Pasadena, MD had an unbelievable time of 22:52 at the Jimmy K 5K and then was never heard from again.

Nelson blasted November with three successive weekends of 5K wins. Her best was the Rockville 5K in 24:41 and all were faster than Coven's response at the nTelos 8K with 41:42. This should make for some interesting racing in the coming months.

Ecris Williams (69) of Reston, VA won at Army in 1:36:50 to edge Rosemary Swartzbard of Arlington, VA (1:38:55) for the third spot in the division.
