Open Men
Kentlands-Lakelands 5K, 14:33, 10K = 30:21
Frank Sprtel (35) of Silver Spring, MD enters the division with a pair of runner-up age group awards at Lawyers Have Heart (34:16) and Crystal City 5K in 16:23.
This period was one of the closest races ever. Steven Crane ended the period finishing third at the Kentlands-Lakelands 5K in 14:42 behind Abiyot Abebe's runner-up 14:39. Abebe had five wins in his 11 races during the period, never finishing worse than third overall. His second best race, the Georgetown 8K in 24:45, matched Crane's Leesburg 10K of 30:58 exactly. After that his times equate to slightly slower than a 5:00 pace 10K.
Crane was undefeated in his first eight races, including the Crystal City 5K in 14:46. More telling, he also bested Abebe in two races, a never-in-doubt rout at the Lawyers Have Heart 31:22 to 32:14, and an opening period tester We've Got Your Back 4M, 19:23 to 19:32.
After his 25:41 Heritage 5M win in July, Tim Young exploded to a powerful 51:41 win at the Hartwood 10 Mile. The next two runners had so-so efforts for their second race. Dejeme Nigussie ran the champion-maker Kentlands 5K in 15:02. Dave Berdan ran the Race for Our Kids 10K in June to an overall win in 31:27. A week later he ran the Survivor 7M in 37:33. Nigussie did his work the day after his first race, winning the 50th Larry Noel 15K in 50:50.
Michael Wardian of Arlington, VA never met a race, at least a long one, he did not like. Half the time when he lines up at a race, he is just getting back into town from another event. He won the Leesburg 20K in a solid 1:06:29. The only reason his fastest race of 24:49 at the Georgetown 8K did not get him the sixth spot is that he met defeat against Jaron Hawkins in late August when Hawkins won the Gary Brown Memorial 5M 24:59 to 25:21.
Jared Abuya of Fairfax, VA is next, racing 4 miles in 19:50, ahead of tenth place Bart Bourghuis (19:57) and edging Robert Wade, 11th place, for fourth overall at the Twilight 8K, 25:05 to 25:08. Jake Klim of Bethesda, MD knifes between them at Kentlands, racing 15:15. Fifty-four runners made the division.

Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, 24:40, 10K = 31:17
Just 13, Kurtis Steck, from the racing town of Williamsburg, VA, celebrates our nation birthday running a 5K in 18:31.
The teen division continues to thrive. As expected during the summer months, the numbers grew to an incredible 81 qualifiers.
Ezkyas Sisay has been a teen as long as he could. In his absence (ascent), Orlando Burton of Newport News, VA steps into his shoes. He had the two fastest times among qualifiers. He won the Super Day 5K in 15:53 and was third overall at the Vineyards of Williamsburg in 16:01. Greg Jubb does his work on the hills of Westminster. His two best races were overall wins. At the rainy Runnymede 8K he bolted ahead easily on the long downhill mile. His 26:26 time was remarkable; that same mile is a little slower on the return. He won the Pleasant Valley 4M in 21:21. Indeed, it is pleasant getting to the valley in the shaded middle of the race. Coming back out of the valley into the sunlight is another story.
Third place is harder to judge. Kyle Ashley of Lanexa, VA had four wins and a 16:09 Yorktown Freedom 5K. Zach Sullivan of Pasadena, MD edges past him with a 15:36 overall win at the Chesapeake XC 5K. Though called a 5K, virtually all of them are 3 miles. They just run as slow as 5Ks. Christopher Werner of Chesapeake, VA edges Brian Rooney of Arlington, VA for fifth place in the division, running the Pam Edwards 5K in 16:12. Rooney ran the Sue and Connie's 4 Mile in 21:11. Three runners made the Elite Division.

Cascades Fire Chase 10K, 32:49
This division is nearly always the smallest division. It got a little more crowded as Philippe Rolly of Fairfax, VA aged up. He wasted no time in shellacking the division. Runner-up Ray Pugsley of Potomac Falls, VA was a former winner of the Cascades 10K. Indeed, last year he was runner-up in 34:01. This year he improved to 33:02 but again ended as second submaster as Rolly set that record in 32:49. In 2005, he set the event record with 30:48 in a photo finish.
Both runners returned to work the following week. Rolly won at the Georgetown 8K in 25:56. Pugsley ran 20:39 at the We've Got Your Back 4M. Still going their separate ways in June, Rolly won at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 32:50, while Pugsley closed as runner-up at the Tim Harmon 5K in 15:48.
Spider Sillery of York, PA had three big races where he was second overall, including the inaugural Baltimore 10 Mile in 55:57. It was his Charm City 20 Mile the final weekend in 1:56:44 that got him past Matthew Ellis for third place in the division. Ellis had run the FAB 5K in 16:07. Frank Sprtel of Silver Spring, MD joined the fray, finishing the Crystal City Twilight 5K in 16:23 for fifth in the division. Four runners made the Elite Division.

Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, 1:14:51, 10K = 33:50
Daniel List (42) of Midlothian, VA makes a massive improvement over his spring race half marathon, running the Patrick Henry HM in 1:19:34.
It ain't over 'till the last half marathon of the period is over. John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA had dropped to fourth in the spring. He started the summer with a ho-hum 17:17 5K while Mark Gilmore of Columbia, MD sprinted off to a division leading 16:35 at the Remembrance 5K. Fourth place Kevin White of Virginia Beach, VA had set back Norfolk's Tom Purcell at the We Build People 5K with 16:37 to 16:51. Later in July, fifth place Andres Wright of Frederick, MD took the second masters spot at the Twilight 8K in 27:31 ahead of Gilmore's 27:56. It was not enough to move him past Gilmore or White who had run 35:43 at the Elizabeth River 10K in May.
The same day as the Twilight 8K, Purcell had popped an overall win at the Allen Stone 5K in 16:46, putting him within range of everyone. The next to last weekend of August at the East Coast Surfing Championship 5K, he catapulted to the lead with a swift 16:30. Piggott was starting to unwind and cranked a masters win at the Hartwood 10M the following day in 57:32 to tiptoe to third a second behind Gilmore.
Now it is time for the aforementioned half marathon. Though nearly two minutes slower than last year's 1:13:02, and in spite of some nasty hot and humid weather, Piggott's 1:14:51 masters win clinches the division crown. Surprisingly, none of the runners made the Elite Division.

Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K, 16:10, 10K = 16:43
Antonio Claro (46) of Rockville, MD caps off three solid 5Ks with his best one at the Kentlands in 18:30 at the end of the period.
Gerrit Labuschagne of Richmond, VA laid down the gauntlet early in the period, finishing top master at the Glen Allen 5K for Autism in 16:59. A week later he ventured north to race the Georgetown 8K in 27:39. Both solid efforts, but last spring's champion, Mark Stickley, knew he was clear of those times. He proceeded to lead the division with a fine Lawyers Have Heart in 33:51. That same day James Coombes of Norfolk, VA came marching out of the shadows with a solid 27:35 win at the Run for the Children 8K.
So now Labuschagne has been "bronzed." Stickley added a nice 16:35 masters win at the Liberty 5K on the Fourth of July. Coombes answered right back with his Yorktown 5K in 16:15. Now he was too close for comfort. Stickley headed for Rockville and laid down a nice 26:50 masters win at the Twilight 8K. That ended his summer racing and he looked like a repeat champion. Then, at the Vineyards of Williamsburg, Coombes added a sweet 16:10 to take the title.
Tim Schuler scooped up his fourth place on the busy June 14 racing day, winning the Vince Tantillo/Jack Barr Memorial 5K outright in 16:55. Fifth place Dave Berardi of Catonsville, MD only had half as many wins as sixth place Ted Poulos (14) of McLean, VA. It was very close; Poulos had his two top times match Berardi to the second (35:38 10K and 17:09 5K), but they were Berardi's second and third best times. His first was one second faster (35:37 10K) and his fourth race was one second slower (40:50 7M). Seventh place David Haaga of Rockville, MD was a mere sliver behind these two with two holiday races. At the DCRRC Handicap 4 Mile he was third overall, matching the 10K equivalent of 35:42 he would run at the Kentlands 5K in 17:07.
Spring runner-up Greg Cauller of York, PA was off his usual pace, mustering up only a best of 36:14 at the Lawyers have Heart 10K for 17th place. He was the summer champion last year. Two runners made the Elite Division.

Innsbrook Healthy Heart 5K, 16:32, 10K = 34:29
Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA slowed slightly from his 16:50 best time of last summer at the Vineyards 5K to 17:06. In this very competitive division, that is all it takes. Maurice Pointer of Baltimore, MD was hungry for those good things. He was everywhere all summer long, winning his age group 16 times. He was already ahead on points, racing the Dundalk 6K in 20:39 on Independence Day. Two days before he had run on the track at Goucher in 16:59 for the 5K.
With all that, he piled on the final weekend. Saturday he raced 35:11 in the 10K at the Potomac Valley Games. Meanwhile, third place Jim Hage of Kensington, MD ran an inspired 17:13 at the Kentlands-Lakelands 5K ahead of fifth place Dan Lawson's 17:21. This moved Hage up four spots.
Pointer was not done. He scurried down to Virginia Beach, the scene of Chantry's 2005 summer rankings win over Chuck Moeser, to take on the Rock 'n' Roll HM. He was the grandmaster champion in 1:19:38 and fifth master overall.
Hage ran the Twilight 8K to an age group win in 28:39. Lawson's next best effort was the Race for the Cure in 17:51. Both of them needed that big race to end the period. Fourth place Jim Bates was a little more consistent. Even having to contend with local rival Chantry, he managed six age group wins. His best race was the Vineyards of Williamsburg in 17:23. Pete Gibson started the period with a solid 36:14 win at the Elizabeth River 10K. The rest of the summer was a wash, but he held on for sixth place.

Georgetown 8K, 28:11, 10K = 35:45
Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA has won it all before. He boldly started out the period, racing the fastest 10K at Elizabeth River in 38:06. Two days later, he made sure he had two required races, bolting to a win at the Yorktown Freedom 10K in 18:54. He even piled on a qualifier at the Warhill 5K to end May. Last period's champion, Alan Pemberton of Silver Spring, MD, was thinking of a slower start. He set the 4-mile standard at Sue and Connie's with 24:10. Then he waited the extra day till June 1 to run the Capital Crescent 5K in 18:14 to take the lead.
Meanwhile, Chuck Moeser came out to race the Georgetown 8K in 28:11 and then left his rivals to wonder whether he would run that required second race. Platt had some other solid races but it was clear that his back was slowing him down. By late August, he was literally walking to finish the Rock 'n' Roll HM he had won last year.
Meanwhile, Pemberton was pulverizing the rest of the division, winning an age-graded race outright. In August he did double duty, running the Leesburg 20K in a state record 1:17:44. Tom Ruckert was all alone out in the western region, winning all the races in sight. His sub 6:00 pace 18:32 at the Health & Fitness 5K earned him the third spot.
Friendly rivals Richard Adams and Tim Morgan lined up to run the Leesburg 10K. Morgan's smile was more a grimace as he drove for home with the sound of Adams's footsteps ever so close. The final score: Morgan 38:56 - Adams 39:15. Adams had run the Crystal City 5K in 18:52. Morgan waited till the last weekend to add insurance, running Kentlands in 18:49.

Leesburg 10K, 39:16
There is nothing unlucky about Bill Joyce's 13 age group wins. As he is relatively new to racing, he is still getting used to winning all the time. Generally speaking, Joyce seems to lose less as the race lengthens. This looked good for Jason Page. Page toasted the field in May, winning the Hamilton 5K in 18:15. Joyce answered back two weeks later, winning the Lawyers have Heart 10K in 39:23. This set up the classic duel at the Leesburg 10K. Racing back down the W&OD trail, Page could not catch up with Joyce, who wisely did not let it go to a final sprint to the finish. He earned his crown winning 39:16 to 39:35.
Fourth place Ronnie Wong noted that third place Bernard Wright of Pomfret, MD had started the period with a flashy win at the Chestertown 10 Mile in 1:07:53. So his work was cut out for him. At the Dawson's 10K in June, Wong again bested archrival John Kirkpatrick (43:18) with a solid 41:38 but the wily Wright was in front with 41:31. Wright wrapped the spot tighter with a nice win at the Leesburg 20K in 1:26:21.
On to Annapolis where Wong had won the ten miler last year, two minutes ahead of Kirkpatrick and four minutes ahead of Joyce (72:02). This year he slowed a little to 1:09:15 for second in the division. Joyce exploded to a 1:06:41 victory. The prolific Wong had 16 wins, including a 20:07 to 20:16 win at the Bel Air Town Run ahead of sixth place Ed Lecates. Jim Noone waited until the last weekend to race the Kentlands 5K in 20:02 to take the fifth spot. Joyce upset visiting Patrick Griffith of Ocala, FL 19:21 to 19:43 to win the race.

Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 42:18
Revanna Krupakar (65) of Falls Church, VA gets revved up by the new division. He was 19th in the 60-64 and 12th in the 65- 69 division.
Lou Shapiro of Silver Spring, MD again handled his division. Of the top 15 times, he had ten of them, all age group wins. He ran all four of the major races in that group. He started the period with the fastest 10 Mile on the eastern shore, racing Chestertown in 1:11:08. Then he capped off the fastest 10K at the Lawyers Have Heart in 42:18, matching his best race from last summer. He had yet to race against either of the next two runners.
Both have better credentials in the 5K and he thought, "It would interesting" to match up with runner-up Jim Becker of Greencastle, PA. Becker does have the fastest half marathon of the year, set in early May, but it is his three 5Ks, faster than Shapiro's best at Capital Crescent in 20:51, that earn him his spot. Bobby Spencer of Daleville, VA comes in third, though he does have the fastest 5K for the year, racing 20:32 at the Commonwealth Games. After that, his other 5Ks are in the 21:00s.
Sonny Barber of Falls Church, VA brought it on with a solid 44:29 at Leesburg. He followed that with a nifty Annapolis 10 Mile in 1:14:40. Skip Mullaney (69) of Charlottesville, VA seems to be gearing up for the next division. On the Fourth of July he romped with a 21:27 to earn fifth place. Note that the last period Chan Robbins was 69 he finished 14th to Mullaney's 3rd in the 65-69 division. There is always another runner ready to move up in the competition.

Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA was determined to get his title back. He pulverized the division with 11 age group wins. He had the division in June, running the Race for the Cure 5K in 23:13. Still, he piled it on in August. At Leesburg, he matched up with the next two runners in the rankings with his fastest race of the period. Ken Quincy of Vienna, VA ran 49:10 ahead of Maynard Weyers of Alexandria, VA who ran 50:09. Robbins was already in line for post race food, cruising home in 47:52.
Robbins finished the period racing Kentlands in 23:11. Former champion Duane Lougee of Norfolk, VA struggled this period. His best effort was a 23:59 win at the We Build People 5K, more than four minutes slower in the 10K equivalent than last period. Of the top 31 races, all but seven were major races.

Too Hot to Trot 5M, 41:31, 10K = 52:21
George Yannakakis of Sparks, MD retains his crown handily with the three fastest times in the division. Often, as runners age, they rely on the 5K. Yannakakis had his fastest time at the Too Hot to Trot 5M. He also acquitted himself quite well at the Annapolis 10 Mile in 1:34:10. Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD again won at the Rockville Rotary 8K (43:35) but had his best race early at the Capital Crescent 5K in 25:58. Though this out- and-back course is all up on the way back, the times are deceptively fast. He nearly matched Yannakakis's track 5K in 25:49, which we know was flat.
Larry Dickerson of Burke, VA does most of his races with the DC Road Runners. During the summer their Bunion Series offers short races between 5K and 8K. He topped his summer with a nifty 27:32 in Bluemont Park.

Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, MD races infrequently but when he does he wins. He cashed in at the Twilight 8K in 51:49 and just kept getting faster. He ended the period with the swiftest 5K at Kentlands to capture the crown. Wendell Golden of Charlottesville, VA had easily the next best 5K times, though they were nearly ten minutes slower.

This period we honor the men who do not have their own five year age group. Walt Washburn (85) of Vienna, VA has been taking on runners in 60-99, 70-99, and now 80-99 divisions, usually successfully. Now, as he prepares for his 86th year in October, we recognize him for running 300 races since turning 80 and winning his age group in nine different distances, including the marathon, in three different years.
90-94 Men
Alvin Guttag of Gaithersburg, MD turned 90 just after the period ended and may be the oldest runner in the region. He is famous for his, "I have been last in more races than you have run" retort. He invariably starts early in the race so as not to hold up the race but when you run by him be prepared for his booming voice announcing, "Looking Good!"
