On a bright and beautiful Sunday morning Atlantic Realty Companies hosted the best 5K in Reston. The total number of registrants was over 1,050 for the first time in the three-year history of the race. There were 763 finishers who raced, ran, or walked the loop course.

The women's competition was hotter than the temperatures with four women breaking the course record established in 2002 by Irina Suvorova with a time of 17:17. Tatyana Petrova (photo left) was the fastest woman overall with an excellent time of 16:31. Only seven seconds behind was Elena Orlova in 16:38. In third place just 3 seconds later was Tatyana Chulakh in 16:41. These three women are from Russia and currently living and training in Gaithersburg, MD.

The woman's winner in 2003 was Atalelech Ketema with a winning time of 17:23. This year she showed off her training and ran 16:49 for fourth place.

The men were unable to beat the course record set in 2002 by Andre Williams with 14:45. Sammy Nyamongo drove up from Augusta, Georgia to take the men's overall award in a time of 15:04. New to the area was Alexey Hohlov just ten seconds back in 15:14. Familiar to the DC racing scene was Kyle Smits who ran a 15:35. Manassas's Todd Rosenberg was fourth with his 16:36.

The fastest Reston resident was Stephen Smith who was sixth overall in a time of 17:23. On the fairer side Cecilia Lutz ran fastest with a time of 19:15, only 8 seconds ahead of Kim McLaughlin. Her husband Neil, Reston's highly regarded chiropractor extraordinaire, won his age group in 18:14 and was twelfth overall. Paul Zink, owner of Footsteps of Reston generously provided all of the age group awards.

After the 5K was finished, there were two kids fun runs, with the older kids traversing the perimeter road around the Plaza America shopping center.

All entry fees from registrants go directly to Children's Hospital. Sponsor participation was at an all-time level with many teams and sponsors contributing to the total of $180,000 raised by the event. In just three short years this race has contributed more than $400,000 to Children's Hospital for its important programs.
