For the first time ever, the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM)
Healthy Kids Fun Run will be held on Marathon Sunday, October
30, 2005
beginning at 9:05 a.m., just minutes after all 30,000 MCM
runners cross the
start line. Participation in last year's Healthy Kids Fun Run
doubled the
2003 total, prompting the move from Saturday to Sunday when more
space is
available for the children. The race field for the one-mile run is limited to 1,400 children
between the
ages of 6-13 and pre-registration is required. All runners must
be
registered and pay the $12 entry fee by October 17, 2005.
Participants
will receive a t-shirt, finisher's ribbon and snacks at the
finish line.
"Children are excited to meet the challenge of getting fit,
staying healthy
and enjoying exercise," explains Rick Nealis, MCM Race
Director. "This is
particularly evident by the dramatic participation increase for
the Healthy
Kids Fun Run." The new Healthy Kids Fun Run one-mile course begins on Route 110
and
Marshall Drive in Arlington, VA and utilizes the same finish
line as the
MCM. Also new in 2005 is Camp Miles, a post-run activity area
featuring
interactive challenges and games focusing on health and fitness
hosted by
the National Children's Museum and ABC 7/ WJLA. Kids Run participants will be required to obtain their t-shirt
and bib at
the MCM Runners' Expo presented by Caremark at the DC Armory on
Friday,
October 28 and Saturday October 29, 2005. Parents and children
are
encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to United
States Marine
Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign. The Healthy Kids Fun Run is presented by The Washington Post and
sponsored
by Sodexho, Families Magazine, ABC7/WJLA, Brooks and Navy
Federal Credit
Union. The Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined tradition of
dedication,
sportsmanship and patriotism. Since its inception, over 300,000
civilian
and military runners from all walks of life have participated,
deservingly
earning the event its nickname "The People's Marathon." The
30th Marine
Corps Marathon will be held on October 30, 2005.
