Who Needs Sleep?

23rd Annual Sallie Mae 10K
By Jim Hage
April 30, 2006
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

In photo below, Mark Malander (3rd master) escorts Eunice Chepkirui (3rd woman) to a matching 33:37 finish.

Speed trumped stamina in both the men's and women's races at the 23rd Sallie Mae 10K on Hains Point. Julius Kibet, who awoke at 3:00 am and drove three hours to Washington from West Chester, PA, broke away from his training partner (traveling partner, as well), Rebuen Chebii, and their fellow Kenyan Benson Cheruiyot in the final 300 meters to win in 28 minutes 51 seconds. Chebii (23) finished second in 28:52 and Cheruiyot (23) third in 28:53.

"I knew I had the finishing speed," said men's winner Kibet. "But I also knew the other guys were good."

Kibet (24) was pleased to add a win to his barnstorming tour of U.S. road races after finishing third at the Cooper River Bridge Run 10K (28:52) in Charleston, SC on April 1 and fifth at the Crescent City 10K (28:13) in New Orleans on April 15. Kibet will race twice on the West Coast and once in Michigan before heading home to Kenya in May.

Another Kenyan, Lineth Chepkurui (18), based in Chapel Hill, NC, did the early risers one better, traveling from Austin the day before after racing--and winning--the Texas Round-Up 10K, then rising at 2:00 am for the five-hour drive to Washington. Chepkuri ran 33:02, exactly one minute faster than her time in Austin, to outdistance Olga Romanova by three seconds. The men and women's winner each earned $500.

Aside from travel fatigue, Chepkurui said she felt pressure--literally--from runner-up Romanova, who clipped Chepkurui's heels a couple of times. "It was frustrating," Chepkurui said. "I told her to stop it." Chepkurui put an end to the contact by gapping Romanova in the final mile.

"She's a very nervous runner," Romanova said of Chepkurui. "When she's running in the front, her legs just stop. She's a very good runner, but those things happen. No one else complains."

Eunice Chepkirui (21), another Kenyan from West Chester, finished third in 33:37, and Florence Jepkosgie (22), also from Kenya and training in Chapel Hill, was fourth in 34:29. Lyubov Kremleva (45) was the masters winner, good for $500. She was fifth in 35:12 to complete an all-Kenyan and Russian top five.

African men took the top 10 places. Joshua Kemei (22) from West Chester was fourth in 29:41 and St. Patrick's Day 8K winner Gurmessa Kumsa (27), from Ethiopia, was fifth in 29:51. Albert Okemwa (40) took the masters title in 30:39, ninth overall. Okemwa, from Kenya, ran 31:00 to win the masters title in Austin one day earlier.

Patrick MacAdie (22) [In photo left] from Washington, DC was the first American, 11th overall. But he was not particularly pleased with the distinction.

"I'm tired of being the first American," MacAdie said. "I had nothing special today, I couldn't dig. I need to be more consistent with my training. I'm not going to race again until I'm really ready."

Notes: A field of 1,877 registered for the event and 1,322 finished on a picture-perfect morning for racing. Henryk Bukowski (85), from Falls Church, VA was the oldest finisher and averaged sub-12:00 miles.
