By George Banker
April 1, 2006
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

Join us at the 23rd annual Sallie Mae 10K, sponsored by the Sallie Mae Fund. The race will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2006 in West Potomac Park, Washington, DC, at 8:00 am.

The event benefits the District of Columbia College Access Program (DC-CAP), a nonprofit organization that helps local high school students enter and graduate from college. DC-CAP, in partnership with the District of Columbia Public School system, provides counseling and financial assistance to students who might otherwise never have the opportunity to go to college.

Register on-line now at www.thesalliemaefund.org/10k or on www.Active.com for just $25. The fee increases to $30 on April 15. College students and those under the age of 18 may register for just $15 (copy of student ID required).

Bring the whole family! A stroller-friendly 2K Family Fun Walk/Run is only $10. It begins at 8:05 am.

The Sallie Mae 10K continues a 23-year tradition of quality racing with a national and international flair. It is the most competitive 10K in Washington, DC. The certified course is flat and fast and encourages elite-level racers as well as competitive and casual participants. The cash purse includes cash for overall winners, masters, and age group winners!

The Sallie Mae 10K always includes lively team competition. Team ribbons will be awarded to the top all-male, all-female, and mixed (coed) teams.

In addition to the flat, fast course, the race offers scenic views of the Potomac River and Washington in springtime, entertainment by the Ballou and Dunbar High School marching bands, bag check service, great post-race food, and random prizes!

On-site registration and packet pick-up are available on:

Friday, April 28th, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Northwest Sport & Health Club, 4001 Brandywine Street NW, Washington, DC 20016 (located near Tenleytown-AU metro stop); and

Saturday, April 29th, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Regency Sport & Health Club, 1800 Old Meadow Road, McLean, VA 22102 (take I-495 to Route 123 toward McLean, turn right at the first light onto Old Meadow Road); and

Packet pick-up only: Sunday, April 30, 2006, 6:30 am to 8:00 am at the race site. Register early, as there is no registration on race day.

Volunteer! There's a place for everyone! Volunteer for the race support team by calling (703) 533-4849. All volunteers will receive a Sallie Mae 10K staff T-shirt and admittance into the Sallie Mae VIP tent.

The Sallie Mae Fund is a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae. The Fund achieves its mission-to increase access to a post-secondary education for America's children-by supporting programs and initiatives that help open doors to higher education, prepare families for their investment, and bridge the gap when no one else can.

Full details and on-line registration is available at www.thesalliemaefund.org/10k. The race hotline is 703-533-4849.
