After Twelve Years, DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K Becomes Even More Masterful
Six course records fall on gorgeous spring morning.

Handicapping road racing can be perilous. The three top Open
men with sub 29:00 pedigree did not make it to the race.
Stephen Koech had just finished running the Cooper River Bridge
10K earlier in the month in 28:38. That is three seconds off
the course record held by Dan Browne. Florence Jepkosgei was
coming off a second place 32:48 at the Ukrops 10K as well as a
sluggish 54:56 (10K = 33:03) at Cherry Blossom. Consider
that Chuck Moeser's 57:35 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile turned
into a 33:47 Pike's Peek.Moeser was one of six runners to set a course record today.
In
photo Darrell General (l) congratulates Chuck Moeser who beat
him to the mats by two seconds in 33:47. Gurmessa Kumsa is no slouch and he won easily today in ever so
slightly warmer weather than ideal in 29:27. The first runner
to bust a record was the fabulous Edmund Burke (37) of
Burtonsville, MD. As runner-up, he had three runners screaming
down the final quarter mile right behind him. The first year
(1996) Brian Ferrari had raced a 30:06. Then two years ago
Mohammed Ar-Ar ran 30:05. Burke's ended his reign by a second
with 30:04. The second runner to break a record was 13th place Hammer
Rexford of Darnestown, MD. This 19-year-old flash upset top
ranked Neal Darmody (17) of Gaithersburg, MD who ran an
excellent 32:22 with an even faster 31:51. Next in line for the record book, the indomitable Moeser (55)
of Sterling, VA settled the grandmaster issue with a spiffy
33:47. He tells us that he is just getting started and plans
to go after terry Permar's 33:42 record of the 50-54 men. Jim
Hage (49) of Kensington, MD will be standing in his way next
year as Hage, who ran 33:40 today will be fifty in February.
While Stephen Chantry (52) of Williamsburg, VA is clearly a
middle distance runner, he gave chase and finished with the
second fastest 50-54 time run on this course with 34:25.
Chantry ran a 4:46:06 mile (2nd fastest in 2007) and a 2:09.92
800M (3rd fastest in (2007) this year. The fourth runner to set
a course record is also a middle distance specialist. Alisa
Harvey (41) of Manassas has the fastest 800M in the country
this year with 2:08:04 and set the American masters record in
the mile with 4:47:26 indoors and last year the outdoor record
in 4:46.29. Harvey won the masters 10K in Rockville with 36:30.Fifth of the pathfinder was Belaynesh Zemedukin (19) of
Washington, DC who outran second teen Anya Oleynik (18) of
Gaithersburg, MD with Harvey sandwiched between them. Oleynik's
fine 37:04 crushed her previous record of 37:59. Zemeduki's
35:43 pulverized it.
In Photo l-r, Jim Bates 2nd 50-54, Stephen Chantry 1sr 50-
54, Maurice Pointer 3rd 50-54, and Rick Platt 2nd 55-59.
The final record was a huge upset. Patrick Griffith (62) now of
Ocala, FL came back to defend his 37:06 record set two years
ago. He knew he was still coming off an foot injury but with
126 wins in his last 127 races he felt good about his chances.
He also had the 55-59 record of 35:51 set in 2000. Moeser took
that away today. Then out of the blue Mike Hazilla (60) of Germantown got to see
all his training payoff. Back in October 2005 Hazilla ran a
solid 39:32. In 2006, Griffith had his usual win at Cherry
Blossom in 62:39. This year he was gone and Hazilla stepped up
to win in 62:19. That spelled danger. Today, an obviously
struggling Griffith managed only a 38:59. Though still national
class as was his number ranking for 2006, it was blown away by
Hazilla's inspired 37:00. Two of Griffith's many records
torched in just one day! In Photo, Michael Hazilla (60) celebrates a new course
record 37:00.
So how did the handicapping go from earlier in the week?
Moeser Prediction 34:00 - Actual 33:47. His challengers
from southern Virginia do not know the Joe Gibbs' way of down
playing themselves and perhaps inspired the always confident
Moeser to excel. Chantry Prediction 34:10 - 34:25. Chantry was gracious
about his loss noting that it was not his best race,
though it was his fastest time of the year. He still feels that
he can win. The two titans are 1-1 now. Platt Prediction 34:50 - Actual 35:21. He was delighted
that we would predict a time faster than his 35:31 Virginia
State record. Watching him limp around after the race, one
could well imagine the calf cramp he had at mile four may have
cost him the predicted time. Bates Prediction 35:30 - 34:59. Seeing Platt slow he
showed no mercy and pushed past him for a confidence building
win. Steve Ruckert Prediction 35:30 -Actual 37:37. Still
immersed, as it were, in triathlons and duathlons, he has yet
to come fully back to racing form, taking fifth in his
division. Lawson Prediction 35:30 - Actual 35:32. He had a tough
loss in the age grouping. He crossed the line a step ahead of
third place Maurice Pointer, but Pointer had got a late start
by thirteen seconds and won on chip. Permar the 50-54 course record holder at 33:42 ducked
this year's race. Pointer Prediction 35:50 - Actual 35:33. He ran a
marvelous race nearly passing Lawson as he made up ground and
starting to close on the wounded Platt. Darmody Prediction 36:30 - Actual 37:25. He and his son
Neal went up to the Penn Relays so maybe some of the adrenaline
was sill worn off. Still, fifth 50-54 in this field is not
shabby at all. Adams Prediction 37:30 - Actual 41:20. Something went
terribly wrong today. This is a training run time. Eddy Prediction 37:40 - Actual 37:57. Ran a fine race in
a blockbuster field and had to settle for seventh in 55-59 men. Wright Prediction 37:50 - 36:58. He pulled out all the
stops, knowing the competition was fierce and took third in his
division. Slonaker Prediction 37:50 - Actual 37:26. He was always
in the mix with competitors close by, front and behind, running
fourth in his division. Tim Morgan Prediction 37:50 - Actual 38:25. He held off
his younger brother for the eighth spot in the division. Griffith Prediction 38:00 - Actual 38:59. This is one
tough runner but when your feet hurt, you just cannot run the
times you would like to have. He finished a rare second in his
division. McDonald Prediction 38:20 - Actual 38:16. One of the
best predictions but then we run track workouts together
Wednesdays so he pace is easier to judge. Rust Prediction 38:30 - Actual 38:14. This race should
inspire him to come out and challenge for his division. Rick Morgan Prediction 39:00 - Actual 38:36. He will
probably tell you he was just following his brother home as he
did as a child. Tom Ruckert Prediction 39:00 - Actual 38:21. This was a
fine effort for eighth place in his division. Carroll Prediction 39:30 - Actual 39:25. He was
delighted with his time and he did not even look tired after
the race. Mason Prediction 39:50 - Actual 39:30. He proved he has
the goods to challenge. Carbary Prediction 39:50 - Actual 41:32. A little slower
than he would have liked but he also thought I was giving him
too much credit. By the end of the year, we will see. Black Prediction 40:30 - Actual 43:26. He bought a new
house and injuries have kept him off the racing circuit. He
chose to run with his wife Beverly. When she started to fade
(43:58), he geared up to try and gun down one more grandmaster. RuberryPrediction 40:30 - Actual 42:48. He was lumbered
a little but he keep right on passing runners all the way to
the finish. Look for big improvements later in the spring. Carlisle Prediction 41:00 - Actual 41:41*. He started in
the second wave, a minute later, so he had the really tough
task of trying to catch up with his competition visually. Salerno Prediction 41:30 - Actual 42:09*. He also
started in the second wave and also belonged in the first wave.
(They did say 40:00 but...) Moreland Prediction 42:00 - Actual 43:08. It was a real
solid plunge in the waters. A great start with virtually
identical splits of 21:30 - 21:38, with eight seconds to retie
the laces just past the four mile mark.
Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA had set the Virginia State
record at Ukrops with 35:31. Today he settled for second in his
division with 35:21. He gets his awards from Peter darmody and
race director Jean Arthur.
