National Race to Stop the Silence 10K
By James Moreland
April 14, 2007
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

With the weather going crazy, up and down fifty degrees, and all the other big time races of spring drawing runners, the Stop the Silence 10K drew even more runners than last year. Last year the race was an 8K and a 5K. This year the other distance was a 2.25M fun run/walk. Nearly as many people participated in the fun event as in the 10K race. The race has joined a growing number of races that feature more women finishers than men. This can be explained by many more new runners coming out. With a flat, fast course that is well- marked and easy to follow, new runners are less likely to be intimidated. Nearly 20% of the runners in this race were running their first race.

Running is one of the few sports were runners of all ages from toddler to octogenarian can participate together and all can win. With five year age group awards to celebrate their efforts runners are competing in a smaller, fairer division. Even so, a runner can always triumph, as the personal time they earned is theirs alone regardless of when they finish. All the finishers of the race can be proud of the accomplishment.

That being said, Stephan Crane (25) of Alexandria, VA (in photo) can be especially proud of his fine winning time of 31:27, which is 5:04 per mile. One minute back, Bert Rodriguez (27) of Arlington, VA is becoming a very familiar face to racing this year. He held off a newcomer, Christopher Nowakowski (28) of Baltimore, MD by a mere six seconds for the runner-up spot. Usually the top masters runner (40 and older) is just forty. This time Mike Hart (51) ended another "stroll" in the park with an excellent 10K time of 36:36. Only two other grandmasters (50 and Older) have run as fast this year.

Michael Golash (63) of Washington, DC set the standard for seniors (60 and older) in the race with 44:12. Right behind him Malcolm O'Hagan (67) of Chevy Chase, MD set the Best of 2007 standard for 65-69 with 44:43. Robert Gurtler (71) of The Plains, VA won the 70-74 division in his 23rd race of the year.

For the women, Hannah Waugh (25) from Newton Abbey, Ireland came all the way across the pond to win the race in 41:33. Lauren Muldoon (25) of Washington, DC was on her heels in 42:01. Top master Joan Fowler (47) of Silver Spring, MD ran a solid Ranked Runner time of 42:08 for third place. Linda Sheimo (50) of Fairfax, VA took grandmaster honors in 47:47. Laurie Coady (60) of Washington, DC was the top woman over sixty.
