New Course, New Faces

But the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile
Remains a Fine Spring Staple

By Jim Hage
April 6, 2008
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

A redesigned course and two new champions marked the 36th Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile run on a cool and damp spring morning. The race, with approximately 12,000 finishers, for the first time started and ended at the Washington Monument and featured several of the city's best known memorials--along with hundreds of the equally renowned cherry trees in full bloom.

Ridouane Harroufi (26, photo), from Morocco, used an explosive kick in the final 500 meters to wrap up the win in 46 minutes 14 seconds over Kenyan stars Nicholas Kamakya and Sammy Kipketer, who finished in 46:15 and 46:20. Harroufi exhorted the crowd with his right arm as he headed down the home stretch; he ran the last two miles in 9:09.

"The whole last mile, I think I can win," an ebullient Harroufi said afterward. "I was in control all the time." Harroufi dedicated his win to his one-year-old son, Ali.

Although primarily an accomplished road racer, Harroufi trains in Albuquerque but also runs track with the Moroccan national team and owns a 3:36.57 1,500-meter time. "El Guerrouj [the Olympic 1,500 and 5,000 gold medalist] is my friend!" Harroufi said.

Three-time champion John Korir (32), from Kenya, finished seventh in 46:30 and again fell short of tying Bill Rodgers for the most Cherry Blossom titles. Eight miles into the women's race, Lineth Chepkurui (20, photo), from Kenya, used a big move to drop two-time marathon world champion and Olympic silver medalist Catherine Ndereba, Angelina Mutuku, and Lidia Simon. Chepkurui, who finished 14th at the World Cross-Country Championships one week earlier, ran with the pack through the opening five miles in a pedestrian 27:45.

But when Chepkurui picked up the pace, the outcome was sealed almost immediately. She ran alone to the finish, breaking the tape in 54:21. Mutuku took second in 54:39, holding off Simon by two seconds. Ndereba (35) was fourth in 54:52.

Chepkurui "was very fast at the end," said Simon, who could have been speaking for a chastened Ndereba as well. "I cannot do that. . . I'm a marathoner."

Runner-up Mutuku, while missing out on first-place prize money of $6,000, still took home $3,000 for her finish and another $3,000 for the second-place finish of her husband, Kamakya.

Colleen de Reuck (43) won the masters race in 57:17, finishing 12th overall. But de Reuck, who set the then-world record of 51:16 here 10 years ago and had a daughter just nine months ago, sets her goals significantly higher and was sufficiently discouraged after the race to decide against defending her title at the Olympic trials marathon in Boston on April 20.

Veena Reddy (29), who very recently moved to Ashburn from Philadelphia, took 14th in 58:38. Reddy will be running the trials and is looking for a top-25 finish. She had not quite met the two month residency requirement so the top local finisher award went to Johanna Allen (26), from Woodbridge in 1:01:05.

Steven Crane (26), from Silver Spring, (in photo) ran a personal best 49:41, out kicking Crosby Freeman from San Francisco for 13th place. As the first American, Crane earned a trip to Japan to race in the Cherry Blossom's sister event. But first, Crane, who led the Pacers-Brooks team to a sixth consecutive win, will run the Boston Marathon on April 21, "because I've always wanted to race there," he said. "It's a great American event."

As is the Cherry Blossom. The new course received generally good reviews - and a few complaints about too many tight turns. But most agreed that the mall venue and the grand tour of the monuments were more than appropriate for an event of such stature.

In photo below, top ranked local masters runner Martha Merz cracks the top 25 with a fine 62:10.
